iPhone for Grandparents

Post by socialforums2019 » Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:31 am

Want to get my grandparents an iPhone in order to facetime, share photo albums, allow them to take decent pictures etc. Obviously don't need to get the top of the line iPhone. Trying to figure out what is the best model to get them. iPhone 7? Where can I still buy the older models?

How is their eyesight? Consider an iPad or an iPhone with a larger screen.

Honestly the new SE is a solid deal and would be a great entry. Here are some sites if you want to go the other way:

I was considering an iPad, but think that they'll use the phone a lot more. Eyesight is OK and was thinking about going with an iPhone Plus, but don't know if it'll be too big size wise for them. Right now, they have smaller screen phones and have the zoom setup so they can read it easier.

Worried about if screen size will be too small for their eyes.

Another issue for us older folks with the smaller iPhones is the keyboard. A smaller keyboard makes it more difficult to hit the desired key, especially if (like me) one's hands sometimes shake a bit.

Unfortunately they don't have Verizon. Assuming a Verizon phone is locked to only Verizon cell towers?

I bought my used iPhone 5s at Best Buy. With IOS 12, it can do a lot that the new phones do without being ginormous and without the cost. If I didn't care about google maps and outlook, I'd revert back to my 4s, which worked fine for me.

Verizon iphones are locked for 60 days. Who is their provider? Does the provider sell phones?

Why not ask them and get their opinion. Do they currently have a smartphone? Is the size of that phone to their liking? If they have an Android phone, will they be able to easily make the switch to an iPhone? If it's just to Facetime, could you use an alternative like Zoom instead?

I would repeat that this needs a hands-on look at different sizes of phones and also iPAD with attention to what they really want to do and in what circumstances.

I find an iPAD with an attached keyboard that also supports the device on a tabletop is pretty good for things like Facetime, Hangouts, etc. We found that using zoom with several people you really want a full screen monitor. (desktop computer or iMAC). Of course displaying the device on a TV set is an option though you have to also manage the the camera at your end. Other people want to sit in a cafe or on the porch and just hold a phone. I find phone screens too small and my wife finds most iPhones too big to get her hand around comfortably. My carry around device for travel is an iPAD mini, but I use a larger size iPAD on a table at home. For an actual phone I alternate between an iPhone 6 and an old flip phone, which is far and away the most convenient carry in the pocket phone but obviously does not take pictures or video conference. I still have a couple of quad band flip phones for international travel. If photography is the interest then a reasonable up to date phone might be indicated. You can take photos with an iPAD but it is awkward.

You really have to try out different things.

I am a grandparent and the larger screen on an IPhone 7 Plus helps a lot. Also, having to push the buttons. . . touch the icons. ..thingy.

I did the iphone thing for my grandparents but it was just an exercise in frustration for them. The volume buttons on the side were always getting pressed inadvertently (always the volume down button) so they could never hear it ring. The screen was too small for reading and it just wasn't really easy for them to work with, especially the small keyboard with their arthritic fingers. We finally got them a mini pad where they do everything but make phone calls and things have worked out much better.

If you want to go with apple, and if they have a TV with HDMI, and wifi in their house, I suggest a new iphoneSE with an appleTV unit.

That way they can either use just the phone, or can use the TV as the display by casting.

I used this arrangement with Google Hangouts video with my children. They use Android phones so I didn't use FaceTime.

If the primary concern is video conferencing between families it might be a webcam set-up with TV would be best. Note there are the two functions of displaying the person you are talking to and having a mic and camera to display you to your contact. A phone, iPAD, or Mac computer has those things built in. Desktop PCs and TV sets in general do not (may not) have a mic and a camera to complete the process.

Sharing photos in my opinion works better when you can view the photos on a larger device but if the desire is to see a photo in a message when you are out and about, then the phone is the tool.

For taking pictures phone cameras are kind of the standard consumer tool these day, so that might motivate the phone.

Powers forbid, of course, the possibility of just calling someone up to talk to them. I don't know if that is a need or not.

OP

I have Walmart's Iphone 6/6S Straight Talk for since 2017 using the Verizon network, had ATT, T Mobile

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Tal ... /863424218

You can buy Iphone 6S for $99 it can switch to any of the three networks, but you should specify which one works best in your area.

My vacation home upstate NY is best for Verizon, your results may be different from mine.

Use https://www.opensignal.com/apps to figure out the percentage of the wireless network near your location

We are thinking of doing this for my wife’s grandparents. The low cost new iPhone looks enticing. It will be easy for us to instruct from afar since everyone else in the family uses an iPhone.

On the other hand, my grandma likes her jitterbug phone. So we (my brother) sent her an amazon kindle with zoom already downloaded. She can now see her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. In fact, we have a call in 12 minutes.

Pretty special that we are able to do this.

DW and I are grandparents. We both have iPhones. I also have an iPad and DW has an iPad mini. The iPads are great for FaceTime and we both use all devices for a variety of things...pay bills, games, email, etc. If they're largely interested in FaceTiming, an iPad is really good.
Those who move forward with a happy spirit will find that things always work out.

I much prefer to Zoom or FaceTime on an iPad than on a phone. I have had good experiences buying used phones and an iPad on swappa.com. My rules for Swappa include only buying from someone with existing ratings (and I do read the ratings) and I usually go for "mint" condition which often arrives looking completely unused. I've bought devices almost exclusively from Swappa for maybe 5 years now.

Our grandson has an iphone, we have only simple cellphones. We both consider a 27 inch monitor screen on our PC much superior to those mini screens on phones for viewing. I i.e. had cataract surgery, need glasses for closeup viewing, but can see perfect pictures on that 27 inch screen.

IPhone XE (2020) base model is $399 and is similar performance to the IPhone 11.
