I need a haircut now. I have short hair. I'm afraid if I cut it myself I'll look like Lloyd Christmas from Dumb & Dumber.

Was considering a #3 all around like mega317. I typically get a 1.5 on the sides and back and trimmed on the top, but obviously I have no idea how to do that.
Man, this made me laugh. I have dark, really straight hair. Always scared I’m going to look like Lloyd! Have what some what call a bowl cut but try to brush it to the side.

This thread is timely for me. Just ordered some Wahl clippers. Haven’t buzzed my hair since college. Really want to try it but a little scared I’ll look like a Chia pet.

So you guys are liking the #3 guard? Not sure if I’ll have the guts but going w no haircut is driving me crazy. On the bright side I won’t be seeing anyone for awhile.

Are any of you guys new to a buzz cut? How are you liking it?

My kids are horrified at the prospect!
Haha, chia pet. I'm also worried about that. My hair is very fine and soft. When I had buzz cuts as a kid, when it grew out it looked like an afrocentric. But hair grows and besides, these are desperate times! :)
Sounds like we have the same hair ... and a similar handicap!

DW has cut my hair for the past 28 years. She was a certified cosmetologist when we met, worked as barber in a military barber shop for a short couple months after we were married and then I became her sole customer. Worked out well for me, got a dynamite Army haircut every two weeks for decades and never had to wait in line and saved thousands of dollars over the course of my career. Now that I'm retired I only get a haircut every month or two, whether I need it or not, still from my DW. When she's done it looks crisp, like I never left the Army. Every now and then when it's too long, I just call it an Air Force haircut :sharebeer
Life is good.

I’m gonna see how I look without cutting it until things evolve to the new normal and my place opens back up. Since I’m working remotely and not needed to be seen by anyone, I’m planning to grow out my mustache and the hairs on my chinny-chin-chin. I’d go for the full beard, but I got nothing on my cheeks or neck.

However, when work begins again as usual, I’ll have to clean it all up again. If that happens before my hair place opens, I’m fine buzzing it with clippers.

Good luck!

Wife can cut my hair in a pinch but she can really only use the trimmers. Will start with a 5/6 on the top and work her way down as she gets to the sides and try to blend it all in. It’s fine once you get past the first couple tries. That first one was pretty rough.

Clippers at home, girlfriend likes cutting my hair but if she didn't, clippers are easy to use on myself.

I always do a 7 faded down to a 2.

Can’t find a Wahl trimmer anywhere - Amazon sold out indefinitely.

Any suggestions on how to have my DW do this cut? All we have is a One Blade beard trimmer and regular scissors.

Have only paid for about 2 haircuts in the last 10-12years

Used to have friends or roommates cut my hair, now have my girlfriend do it.

Bought a couple nice sets and they last forever

I've had buzz cuts for the last 28 years or so since I was about 9-years-old. My parents bought a set of Wahl clippers back in the 90s that my mom uses on my dad and myself. Couldn't get much easier for me.

My wife gets her hair done about every 3 months, and the last time she went was mid-to-late February. She'll be due again in late May - not sure what she'll do if things are still closed up at that point. Probably wait, I guess.

My son is the more pressing issue. He's almost 3, and he needed a haircut basically right when this all started. My wife refuses to let my mom buzz cut his hair. So far all we've done is trim him up a little bit around his ears, but he's looking shaggy. I've told my wife to have my mom buzz cut him, but no dice yet. I'm wondering at what point she'll give in on it.

I have not been in a barbershop as an adult. I cut my own hair with clippers. The whole process consumes less time than it would take to get to a shop. Clippers cost less than one barber haircut. Been doing this for decades. Must have saved thousands over the years on fees, gas and much more than that on time.

After about 2 months, cut mine with shaver, no guard as I always do. In fact I actually use the trimmer to shave because it gets closer. Beard use a blending guard.

After reading this thread I watched a you tube video and decided to do my teenage son's. It took longer than I thought and top was difficult due to cowlicks. I kept having to shorter until I got to a number 5 on top, and blended shorter on the sides. It didn't turn out bad, but looks better when stylists use scissors on top.

It's always been my preference to keep my hair short, but I've never enjoyed haircuts, so it's typically been 3-4 months before the daily attempts to not look unkept drive me to get a cut.

I think I'm at 2 months right now, so nothing unusual.

Based on recent trends and the latest predictions, I think there are good odds my state will start lifting non-essential activity restrictions at the start of May.

However, hair cutting is obviously a business where customer and provider spend a fair amount of time in close proximity. If we end up with a phased lifting of restrictions, I would think hair-cutting would be one of the activities to be restricted longer. Even if not, we'll be at 6 weeks of stay-at-home orders by then, and there's likely to be more pent-up demand than I will want to deal with for a couple weeks.

The next question is which will drive me shave first: My wife deciding she can't stand the look, the itchiness, or returning to work.

If we move to wearing masks whenever we go out, we XY types may need to shave because beards interfere with the fit and function of masks.

I've cut my own hair (USA-made clippers) for 15 years and my boys' hair for as long has they've had it. For clippers with standard guides, mine is #4 to #8 and the boys are #5 to #12.

I've been cutting my own hair since the Great Recession when I was laid off. If I want, it's easier to just buzz off my hair, and keep that look. Otherwise, it's #2 on the side and back and #4 on the top. I've gotten good enough at it that no one would have guessed I cut my own hair.

Female with super thick hair that grows fast. I could use a trim but have a ways to go before it starts looking too shaggy. I have never colored my hair so I won't be going through the skunk phase.

I’ve cut my own hair with clippers and scissors for years. My wife tells me it looks better than when I went to get it cut professionally. I’ve saved a lot of money and time. Wahl clippers with all the guards. Watch a couple YouTube videos. Easy peasy.

I’ve been bald twice. Once when I joined the military and another time on deployment in the military when we all had too much to drink and decided to shave our heads. I didn’t mind the look but I do look better with hair. Give it a go. It will grow out. Eventually.....

I have naturally curly hair so I really don't have it cut normally. Occasionally I might trim the ends of the curls after a shower.

My husband uses clippers with a guard to cut his hair and I even up the back for him, been doing that for years.

So I saw a bunch of videos on YouTube where people trim the sides (mear the ear) using a clipper and fades using different sizes. However I couldn't find a beginner video that trims the top using a clipper (they all use scissors). Is it not ok to trim the top with a #8 and sides using a #5 or #4? Can someone point me to a good video that uses clipper to trim the top hair?

The longest hair I had in my life was more than 1ft.
I cut my hair at the beginning of the crisis (and last day of work in the office) after more than 6 months.
How is one due for a hair cut? What is wrong with long hair?
Or with no hair for that matter (I look terrible with no hair but it works on others)?

Maybe it's a business opportunity to bring back the Flowbee that used to advertised on TV all the time. It cut hair as I recall but it had some kind of connection to a vacuum cleaner as well.
I think that was from Wayne’s World.

There’s no nice way to say this, but I would rather lose 30k then look like I had cut my own hair for 28 years. I assure you that people notice.
No, the Flowbee was REAL. Actually, it IS STILL real.....

https://www.flowbee.com/

They still make it and sell it
And it works great. I bought one 3 years ago and have been cutting my own and my DH's hair ever since. I cut the top, back and sides with the Flowbee and use a trimmer for the neckline and sideburns. We're both very happy with the results and appreciate being able to get a haircut whenever we want one. There is nothing to clean up afterwards either since all the cut hair goes right into the vacuum cleaner.

Reading these posts sounds like it's way too much worry and work. How about just brushing it back into a pony tail?
