What are you doing for haircuts due to coronavirus shutdown?

Post by jastevenson » Fri Apr 03, 2020 8:48 pm

My hair grows pretty quick, so I am due for a haircut. However, all the barber shops are shut down.

How are you handling our national health hair crisis?

I'm a woman with short hair. It's been short for decades.

I guess I won't worry about it. If it grows, it grows.

At least I'm not coloring it. Those women have more of an issue.

I'm thinking I'll buy some clippers and go #3 all around like I did in college.

I cut my own hair with a shaver about every 3 months (I did it yesterday morning). My wife "cleans it up" a bit with scissors to get the stray hairs I miss. I cut it short, like a buzzcut, so this works pretty well for me. I haven't paid for a haircut in at least 15 years!

My hair is long, so now it will be really long. One of my college age boys who is home from school let me cut his hair and I did an amazing job! My other college kid said, “Don’t come near me with those scissors.” My younger kid let me cut his hair, but talked and moved around too much and decided that he had enough when I was 3/4 of the way done.

I need a haircut now. I have short hair. I'm afraid if I cut it myself I'll look like Lloyd Christmas from Dumb & Dumber.

Was considering a #3 all around like mega317. I typically get a 1.5 on the sides and back and trimmed on the top, but obviously I have no idea how to do that.

Have been using a Wahl clipper for ~10yr no comb, just the blade guard set as close as I can get it. Do it once a week.

My wife cuts everybody's hair. Before I married, I did my own (a buzz most of the time) for about a decade. Because I do not have to publicly represent my employer at the moment, I have the same haircut as my 4yr old son: a (long) mohawk. My boss does not forget to end every Microsoft Teams video conference with a reminder that it will be cut off before I return to the office.

Strongly considering it. I haven't shaved in over a week. I look awful.

This is a concern. Current plan is to go Grizzly Adams mode, but may have my wife do the #3 strategy outlined above if I get desperate.

My wife used to cut my hair back when we were poor. I told her she’s going to start up again, or if she doesn’t I’m going to give myself a buzz cut and she’s going to have to look at me until it grows out. She acquiesced.

Same as always. My wife cuts my hair. She does a better job than any other barber or stylist. I don't think she likes doing it. I can tell she is nervous and she takes a really long time to get it just right.
We plan. G-d laughs.

Go buy some clippers and do it yourself if you are a guy. Let YouTube be your friend. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself and you are married, let your wife do it. Could be wrong, but alot of guys will never go back to the barber shop when they find out how easy it is. From an investing viewpoint, if you save $25 a month from not paying for haircuts, and invest the money at an eight percent compounded rate of return, after 28 years you will have $30,000. Perhaps you could retire 1 year sooner with this one simple decision. Not to mention the time saved from traveling and waiting. The time saved can be life changing. On a side note, it used to amaze me by the number of bald men that payed for haircuts. I never understood that.

Maybe it's a business opportunity to bring back the Flowbee that used to advertised on TV all the time. It cut hair as I recall but it had some kind of connection to a vacuum cleaner as well.

In AZ, you can still get a cut this weekend before the government forces them to close down. Fortunately, my wife has been cutting my hair for years now :)

I was due for a haircut at the very moment all the shops closed, so I'm more than a month overdue now. I can't stand it, it gets in the way and it's a pain just to wash it. My wife says she'll cut it if she can buy $200 of new equipment (that will most likely be used once and then go in the attic or be discarded).

Same as I've been doing for many years. #3 guard (3/8") all around with Made In USA Wahl clippers. Sounds like we've got quite a few on the same page here.

Funny I had just gotten my first buzz cut right before this epidemic landed. Sort of like a lucky pundit calling the market, he he. But you know I like it, like the airflow. So I’m not sure what’s going to happen, and hoping the barber is still there when businesses open again.

Literally just finished cutting my beard using my Norelco beard trimmer set to number 4. What hair is above the beard can go a couple more weeks before breaking out the #3 guard on my hair clippers. I haven't seen a barber in three decades so Covid-19 isn't cramping my style.

I ordered clippers from Amazon a few days ago when I noticed that the high ranked products from Wirecutter were sold out. Got my first #3 cut today courtesy of my wife. I was impressed.

I've also ordered clippers from Amazon. Sounds like they'll arrive in a few weeks. My suspicion is that this won't go well, and I'll just end up shaving it bald for the time being. But I will start with the #3 route, since many here like it.

Same as it has been for a while. #2 (1/4") all over buzz I've been doing for years. The dog gets a 1/2" buzz with the same clippers. I cut my son's hair with clippers/scissors. Been cutting my own for nearly 20 years now. Business as usual in our house.

I've cut my own hair for over 20 years. I am on my second Wahl "Designer." Its simple once you get the hang of it. I use a #1 for my head and I trim my beard with it without an insert/guard. It has saved me thousands of $ over that time. The trickiest part is the back of the head, but with a handheld mirror, its easy to master.

I have cut my hair myself for the past twelve years or so, using a good Andis clipper. My wife trims the back of my neck. I don't do it to save money; I just never really liked how a barber or salon cutter did it and I also never liked having to spend an hour and a half driving, waiting, and then getting my hair cut. My wife, on the other hand, risked her life, and mine, to get her hair cut and her roots colored just before our state's lockdown started.

New thread: is anyone else buying stock in the Flowbee?

First three responses- I only invest in TSM so I already own a part of Flowbee.

Fourth response- The chances of a pandemic where all hair clippers were sold out on Amazon was already priced into shares of Flowbee. You think you’re smarter than institutional investors heavy in Flowbee?

That's a trimmer for edges and such. You want a nice set of clippers. I had been using a 25 dollar set for the last 10 years from Walmart but this last year, we sprung for a Wahl Senior and set of professional guides. Highly recommended! The whole kit turned out around 100 bucks but we use it for my hair and my 2 boys so it adds up fast. I'll do a 8 on top and a 3-4 on the sides. Having a good set of clippers makes a huge difference.

Luckily I already had a set of Wahl clippers before all of this started. My daughter cut my hair for me out on the deck a week ago. Due to my Tommy Smothers hairstyle, it was hard to screw up and it came out fine. :D

Some of us do a good job. I stared cutting my own hair decades ago when I got exasperated at how bad a job professionals did and tired of going home and neatening things up, not to mention the times they made such a mess of things that I had to wait for it to grow out.

I can also cut it at 2am if I feel like it, instead of making a big production of getting an appointment, waiting, wasting time, etc.

I did a better job when I was younger and had the stamina to stand up longer so I could undercut layers, etc. but it is still acceptable.

Plus correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they charge twice as much or more to cut women's hair as men's. That's a lot of money over the decades.

Clippers at home. A #8 length on top and #3 on the sides gives a passable haircut. Fading the two together takes practice. The trick is not caring at all.

Same as I've been doing for many years. #3 guard (3/8") all around with Made In USA Wahl clippers. Sounds like we've got quite a few on the same page here.
There are a bunch of wahl clippers online, can you please tell me which ones you used? Something like this, perhaps?:

I actually have this model (going by look):

https://www.amazon.com/Grooming-husband ... B0026IBSVE

It was a kit purchased at Walmart over a decade ago. Has 8 different guards in 1/8" increments numbered 1-8 from 1/8" to 1", plus left and right ear tapers. If you have a simple haircut, it pays for itself in 3 cuts or less. I'm not sure if this model is still available, but they have a newer version. The version you linked would be fine as well. Maybe still in stock because it's a more expensive professional model. The only gripe I have had with mine is the black "grippy" surface of rubberized plastic on the face disintegrated and turned into a sticky mess over time. In this case, easy solution. Snap off the decorative plate and throw it away, as it serves no functional purpose. I've had this happen on many items over the years (hair clippers, computer mouse, stapler, umbrella handle, and others), so my suggestion is to avoid this style of grippy surface whenever other options are available. If you plan to keep something a while (and I do), these surface treatments are terrible. Rubbing alcohol and a good scrub can sometimes remedy if the part is not removable or easily coverable. I removed completely on the clippers and mouse and covered with tape on the umbrella handle. I still have a sticky stapler, though. Need to work on that one. End rant.

Clippers at home. A #8 length on top and #3 on the sides gives a passable haircut. Fading the two together takes practice. The trick is not caring at all.
Haha! That's the trick for many things!
