we live in westchester, kids in nyc, bring them home?

Post by gips »

We've been struggling with this decission:
- westchester ny: 8500 cases, our town 20 cases
- nyc 59,000 cases
-my wife and I are in high-risk groups, I'm 63 and she is under 60 but has an auto-immune disease.
- our college age D is home with us
- kids are in early 20s, asymptomatic, sharing a place in manhattan

we could bring them home and ask them to self-quarantine for 14 days or let them ride it out in nyc. They feel they should stay put in nyc in case they have the virus and are asymptomatic.

what would you do and why?

Your kids are right, they should stay in the city. They are in a very low risk category, so even if they were to be exposed there is little risk of serious illness.

Your wife, on the other hand, needs to be protected.

Overall it is best for people to stay put where they currently are. Combining household increases the risk of transmission for everyone. Per-capita NYC has a much higher population and with many practicing the social distancing measures there the city won't be a hotspot for transmission like it once was when the city was packed with tourists.

Agree.

Keep the kids where they are. . . it avoids any accidental vectors into your house.
My parents are in a similar situation, and just need to be patient and 'hole up' in the house for a while.

Hang in there.
