best replacement for Cox gateway modem/router combo

Post by atj520 »

Hi,

Does anyone know of a good alternative to renting a Cox Gateway modem/router combo?
We have up to 200mbps package and are achieving that with the hardware we're currently renting for $12/mo. So far we like it a lot, but I'm a boglehead and I want to save $$$ :-)

I'd rather have a gateway, which is a modem AND router in one, rather than buy and piece together separately. Looking for convenience, plug in and turn on. We have a 1100 sq. ft. 2 bedroom apartment. The following are approved by Cox and seem to be pretty strong, anyone had any experience or recommendations?

Heck yeah, replacing my rental modem was one of my favorite financial moves I ever made. Probably saved me almost a thousand dollars. ATT doesn't let you do this unfortunately.

Does this help?

Another Surfboard fan here, as my cable modem. On my second one in about 10 years. You need to update now and again to keep up w technology. I have had zero issues, ever. I use a separate wireless router, Google Wifi

I’m a separate modem and router guy. That aside, I’d suggest looking at eBay and Amazon for a used modem rather than new. They don’t wear out and I’ve had good luck going used over the years

For example, the 7000 modem you mentioned at Amazon is $199 new but $110 used.
People say nothing is impossible. I do nothing all day.

I bought the 7000 unit you mentioned in your second link, but refurbished from Amazon as the poster above mentioned for my daughter’s apartment. I researched it and talked to Cox first. It has worked extremely well. Would highly recommend! If my separate units go out, would consider it for my home as well.
