Pet Peeve: Bar Keeper's Friend Clumping

Post by Leesbro63 » Wed Feb 19, 2020 5:38 pm

Why does Bar Keeper's Friend (and Comet Cleanser) clump? Why don't they sell it in a container that prevents clumping and/or can be manipulated to break it up when it does clump? This has been this way forever. I finally put it into an empty plastic water bottle...filling only half way, so I can squeeze and and shake. But what a pain to get the power into it. There has to be a better way. ???? And why hasn't a competitor capitalized on this nuisance? (And please don't suggest the liquid Bar Keeper's Friend...it's too dilute...I like a more abrasive scrub...that can be controlled with the powder.)

I just bang it on the sink each time before I use it.

You could try inserting some kind of silica gel packet into it (maybe decant it into a clean plastic parmesean cheese canister)?

Shake the container real hard before you use it.

Humidity will make any hydrophilic powder clump. The solution I've found is to keep the scouring powder in a cabinet in my laundry room, rather than under a sink where it's humid. I also just bang the can against the bathtub to get the last chunks broken up

I thought this was going to be about favoritism at the tavern.

It is annoying. Try covering the top of the can with plastic wrap or a plastic sandwich bag secured by a rubber band to keep moisture out.

Just run the air conditioning enough to maintain humidity levels at 50% though out the house.

I really like the parmesan cheese container idea.

I only buy Bar Keeper's Friend in liquid form to avoid this very problem. I also find the liquid easier to use.

I disagree. I like a grittier solution. It's too dilute.

We just tape up the holes with one piece of wide painters tape when not using. Never had it clump.

Bon Ami doesn't contain oxalic acid, which is a very effective cleaner for certain things. Barkeeper's Friend does contain oxalic acid.
