Thanks for this! Great album — added to the collection. Interesting background info, too.

(Harrison's version of Dylan's If Not for You is really nice. The slide guitar adds a lot.)

I'd not heard her or of her until some time last year after 4 nominations at the 2020 Grammys.
You piqued my interest... yup, good stuff! Now I know a bit of Yola. :beer

The demos are eye-opening, so glad we have them! You’ve probably heard George cover Absolutely Sweet Marie at the 30th Anniversary Concert, I smile every time I hear that.

Ha! No, I had never seen or heard that! Beautiful! Faithful to the song, but having fun with it, too! Was that G.E. Smith on guitar? Harrison really seemed to enjoy playing with others a whole lot.

I haven't been through all the demos yet, but really liked the un-plugged version of My Sweet Lord. If you ask me, that was ready for prime time... Really love the jams, Out of the Blue, etc. Had somehow never noticed them, either!

Great sound quality, too.

Yup that was him! I saw him play with Dylan in ‘89. You should watch that whole 30th Anniversary Concert if possible, some great covers! One standout was Foot of Pride performed by Lou Reed.

Actually I found the whole concert, audio only: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnpX ... 7w7dmVhI6R

^^^Wow, that's a really fine album! Beautiful version of Jamaica Say You Will.

I'll have to check this out. I have enormous respect for Los Lobos. I've seen them probably three or four times now, and each and every time it's been a completely different show! The last time I saw them in a trio of bands billed as sort of a conspiring group of blues acts in a much larger festival: Tedeschi-Trucks Band, North Mississippi All-Stars, and Los Lobos. I expected Tedeschi-Trucks to be the standouts, but man was I wrong! Tedeschi-Trucks did play last, but Los Lobos really blew the place apart! I was absolutely amazed at how well they played the blues — just straight-up, hard-core blues. These guys are extremely accomplished musicians — no matter what genre they choose to play.

Currently spinning:

Garcia (Compliments) (Expanded) 1974

This is basically Jerry Garcia's covers album of lots of pop classics, and he gets quite a bit of session help on lots of the tunes. At one point, Garcia said in an interview I read (mid-1970s) that he was most satisfied with this effort. I do think it's held up very well over the years.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, and the YouTube suggestions pulled up this gem of a Dylan cover:
Positively 4th Street (Live) · Jerry Garcia · Merl Saunders · John Kahn · Bill Vitt — Live At Keystone, Volume 1
Garcia was still physically healthy in '73, and he gives a hearty and heart-felt rendition of this tune, and really makes it his own. (David Grisman chiming in on mandolin is a bonus.) Live at Keystone was a big favorite of mine in my high school years.
^^^ Yes Los Lobos is a great band. I never saw them live but if I get the chance I will. I’ve got some time off here and I’m listening to all their albums. I saw Garcia and the Dead twice only, in 1970 and again in ‘71. Wish it had been more.
Yes, a bit. I also like what I've heard of Laura Cantrell. Very nice, expressive voice. Interestingly, her wikipedia page says in 2011 she began working as a recruiter for AllianceBernstein, after leaving a gig as vice-president in the equity research department of Bank of America. (I often like to learn at least a little bit about the artists whose music I like.)
Anya Hinkle also spent some time in academia (biology) at UC Berkeley, according to a quick Google search.
Of the two, Anya Hinkle comes across to me as a bit more hard-scrabble. I also really love the bluegrass bent of her music. (One of the more topical tunes on the album was co-written with Graham Sharp of the Steep Canyon Rangers.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For no apparent reason, just felt like listening to one of the best covers of Laura Nyro's summertime ode Stoned Soul Picnic I've ever come across, this one by bassist Laura Love:

Stoned Soul Picnic · Laura Love

(Laura Love is an under-appreciated force of nature.)

A very talented — but unfortunately long-defunct — string quartet rooted in upstate NY: The Heartbeats Rhythm Quartet.

The CD I have credits publishing to Mountain Wave Music, and I've always thought "mountain wave" was a very appropriate description of their music: rooted in old-time string band music, but carried forward in a new and original direction. I was fortunate enough to see these guys at a small hole-in-the-wall music venue in Hartford, CT in about 1995, and I was impressed by the "freshness" of their approach to traditional music. And they were an excellent dance band! (Tara Nevins, of course, went on to help form Donna the Buffalo, and a few of the tunes on this album made it into the Donna the Buffalo repertoire.)

The tune that seems to exemplify the "mountain wave" moniker for me is Signs of Rain. I think it's the musical bridge that really makes this tune...

I agree. I love these two songs in particular and that’s why I posted them. The first song was written by Woody Guthrie but it sounds like an old civil war song. It breaks me up every time I hear it.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams — Tony Bennett. He retired from the stage today at the age of 95. What can I say — a huge talent.

You can hear Amy Winehouse’s version of this great song here, performed in concert only, no studio recording.

Diana Krall also covered it, and did it very well, in a slower tempo.

I saw her several times in the mid to late 80s when she was an emerging singer-songwriter. The first time I saw her was at a small club with fewer than 30 people in attendance. One of her songs featured references to Lake Pontchartrain and she offered to give an album to anyone who could spell it. I kept telling my date how to spell it, but she was too shy to speak up. After several people failed, I spoke up. Went to the bar at Nanci's break and picked up my free vinyl of one of her first two albums. I don't remember which one it was now, but I still have it. I agree with you — Nanci Griffith's voice is very nice. Youthful innocence, yes — and kindness and warmth. I started hearing her on a local college station with a weekday morning rush hour show called "FM on Toast". One of my favorite tunes of hers is Listen To The Radio

Here's another really nice (and nice-fitting) cover tune from her first album of covers: John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (with John Prine singing back-up!)

RIP Nanci.

About the third song that popped up on my 2000+ track playlist of numerous artists after I heard of Nanci's passing today was her singing "Lone Star State of Mind." Probably my favorite performance of hers even though it was not written by her but by Fred Koller and a couple of others.

Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan: it’s odd that the earlier songs seem to be live and the later ones have Jagger singing live to a prerecorded band. This was in Folder #212 on my USB drive of Rolling Stones albums, bootlegs, etc. that I keep plugged into my car. I kind of forgot that I had this in mp3 format. Here’s the info:

https://www.edsullivan.com/artists/the-rolling-stones/

A few of the songs seem to be odd choices: Little Red Rooster, Everybody Needs Someone to Love, and Love in Vain, although great Stones songs, they weren’t hits, per se.

This was Let’s Spend the Night Together which Jagger changed the lyrics to on air to be acceptable to the then-current TV standards at Sullivan’s demand. The changed lyric sounds ridiculous. You can see Mick rolling his eyes at least once when he delivers the phony line. Also the girls were screaming for Brian, not Mick. Brian was the leader of the band.

It’s interesting that when Sullivan demanded that Jim Morrison change the lyrics to Light My Fire to remove a supposed drug reference Morrison agreed, then when he sang it live he didn’t change a thing. Sullivan was livid and banned The Doors from his show forever. Of course Morrison didn’t live much longer anyway, and neither did Sullivan. Also Robby Krieger showed up at airtime with an unexplained black eye and they didn’t apply makeup to cover it up. So The Doors, not The Rolling Stones, were the ultimate bad-boy band at that time.

Ahahaha. I beg to defer.
This band blew up their instruments on stage, causing one of the members to suffer hearing loss.

I must admit you’re right. I forgot about that. But they were never arrested for indecent exposure on stage 😀

The Latin Playboys (self-titled)

This was a side project of Los Lobos, two albums only. It’s a much more experimental and avant-garde style than LL, an interesting sound, I like it. I found this group because Los Lobos mentioned them in a song, in Set Me Free (Rosa Lee), so I looked them up!

Just was really in the mood for some good pedal steel guitar (Buddy Cage RIP :( )... and some more of that distinctive Dave Torbert bass playing. So here's a cover of Peter Rowan's Lonesome L.A. Cowboy, from the New Riders.

Heh, heh, even better for that craving is this overlooked little rocker...
Kick In the Head

BTW, does anyone have a favorite band — other than a traditional country & western band — that features the pedal steel guitar prominently?

The New Riders gave me an enduring appreciation for the sound of the instrument, but its use seems fairly rare, outside of country & western music.

I'm listening to my oldest daughter's All-State String Orchestra Concert, 1995.

It always amazes me how well these high school juniors and seniors could play.

I am trying to get my daughter (viola player) and granddaughter (piano/flute player) to learn a few duets for me. We will see how that goes.

A month ago, I was watching the TV series "The Americans" and the opening minutes had Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" as the background music.

Last night, I was watching the TV series "Mindhunter" and the closing minutes had Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" as the background music.

"Tusk" is not exactly one of Fleetwood Mac's most popular or well-known songs. It struck me as interesting it would show up in two modern shows.

My son, home for a couple of weeks, sitting in the sun room with his Fender Telecaster, a Roland amp, and eight various pedals. A mix of shoegaze and Frippertronics that I'm really digging fills the house. :)

I love the Little Red Rooster Live clip. The Rolling Stones, Now! was my first Stones album and that song was my favorite.

I enjoyed the others, too. Thanks for posting.

I've always loved the Paul Simon Graceland album, especially the Graceland track.

I've also been a big fan of banjo: Bela Fleck, Steve Martin and others.

A month or so ago I stumbled on Graceland by The Tallest Man Alive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKqLQcIfgvI

He added banjo! I love that banjo!

I've heard of him for many years but have now "discovered" him. He's Swedish. No accent in that voice. I've got several of his songs on my playlist for when I walk.

I'm listening to his Graceland now.

Here’s a great Wikipedia article (I know, Wikipedia can be a little unreliable, but I found it to be very informative) on Little Red Rooster:

Thanks for inspiring me look up the song. Sometimes I forget how much I like some of the old blues masters.

RIP Nanci.

About the third song that popped up on my 2000+ track playlist of numerous artists after I heard of Nanci's passing today was her singing "Lone Star State of Mind." Probably my favorite performance of hers even though it was not written by her but by Fred Koller and a couple of others.

Helped take the sting out.
I'm listening to a loving tribute to Nanci Griffith on the radio station that introduced me to her. And I thought of you, Doom&Gloom. There are some personal anecdotes by the dj, with some snippets of interviews mixed in. He also spoke of a nice obituary by Geoffrey Himes in Paste.

The roughly hour-long tribute starts at about 1:05 into this archived recording (available for only two weeks from the air date):

https://wwuh.streamrewind.com/bookmarks ... keon-gus-t

(The slider only lets you move in 15 min. intervals. So if you choose to listen, you'll need to wait through 5 minutes of Warren Zevon and local favorite The Nields. But I think it might be worth it for you...)

Closing Time, It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go, Ford Econoline, I Wish It Would Rain, On Grafton Street, Gulf Coast Highway, Wimoweh, Hell No, Listen to the Radio, The Wing and the Wheel, Last of the True Believers, There's A Light Beyond These Woods, Once In a Very Blue Moon, Roseville Fair, I'm Not Driving These Wheels, Dance on a Red Brick Floor, Well Alright, Tecuseh Valley, Love at the Five and Dime, Banks of the Pontrchartrain,

The Curmudgeon: Nanci Griffith, or Emily Dickinson at the Rodeo

(I'm still curious for more details surrounding her passing.)

Good lord, those look like they were pulled from my playlist :beer

I will certainly give it a listen in the next few days when I can find a spot I know I won't be disturbed. That obit/tribute is the best and most enlightening I've read--and I've read a few this past week. Thanks a lot for the links! I can certainly stand Zevon for a few minutes--he and Leonard Cohen are the two guys I most regret not finding earlier than I did.

ETA: Her publicist announced that Nanci did not want the cause of her death released until a week after her death. So the details could be coming soon. Or not ...

iceport,
Listening to the link above now. Haven't heard some of the versions of those songs before. What a nice change! I wish they would have said who some of the people in the interviews were. Some were obvious, but others were not.

Just got through hearing Nanci & Townes Van Zant's duet of his Tecumseh Valley that I don't recall hearing previously. Awesome! I may have posted this somewhere here previously, but the one time I saw Townes was one of the best experiences I ever had. He was performing at Anderson Fair in Houston which is the setting of Nanci's Spin on a Red Brick Floor on her cleverly titled album A Fair Summer Evening. (Also where I saw Nanci when I "won" the album I mentioned above as well as where I saw Lyle Lovett open for her before he had released an album.) There were fewer than 20 people there to hear Townes that night, so he stepped down off the stage and sat at a table in the listening area for his entire performance. The table he landed at was next to the one where I was seated. More intimate than a house concert and quite memorable!

By the time I got to this point in my writing, Nanci and Lyle are singing a duet of Closing Time. Nice!

Thanks again for the link!
