Job opportunities in Healthcare IT Security - Seeking advice for spouse

Post by katnok »

My wife, who has a Masters degree in Computer Science, is currently employed as a Network/Information Security Administrator at a small (~500 employees) healthcare system. She doesn't have any certifications, but working towards CompTIA certification to advance her career (with plans to get additional certifications over the next couple of years). Unfortunately, there is no room for growth where she works now, so she wants to look elsewhere.

Going forward, she prefers to narrow her focus to information/cyber security in healthcare (but open to similar opportunities in other fields). However, she plays multiple roles (listed below) in her current job that she is not sure how prospective employers will view her in terms of her knowledge and skills.

Her current responsibilities include the following:

1. HIPAA compliance, writing and implementing security policies
2. Security awareness training
3. Server and network management
4. Identify and access management
5. Security monitoring, Audits, Risk analysis, Incident Response, Disaster Recovery

I would appreciate any guidance from those working in this area. Also, she wonders how she can find a mentor.

Thanks.

Different industry but in mine the CISSP and the various SANS security certs are highly valued. Also knowledge of NIST 800-171 and 800-53 are in demand. CMMC is the new one for next year.

It sounds like your wife has a pretty good resume for an in-demand field! She's in good shape.

Healthcare is a growing field. Cybersecurity is a growing field. Put them together and you've got job security!

To her specific experiences:

1. If she's focused on healthcare, focus on the HIPAA part, otherwise, compliance and policies are good experiences for cybersecurity jobs.
2. This is good.
3. Focus on the security aspects of the job: backups, account creation, etc.
4. Perfect.
5. Some of these are sub-specifications of the cybersecurity field. If she enjoys any particular task more than another, highlight that.

Good luck on the job hunt and Merry Christmas!

I'm also in Healthcare IT but on the project management side of the house. Healthcare IT is certainly a great marriage in terms of job security in a thriving industry. What is her goal? Does she want to rise up the ranks? Job security? Increase in pay? That may help with the objective of narrowing her expertise.
This is not legal or certified financial advice but you know that already.
