Target gift cards 10% off tomorrow (Sunday Dec. 8)

Post by 7eight9 » Sat Dec 07, 2019 5:40 pm

Hands down, this Sunday is the best day of the year to buy Target store gift cards.
For one-day only Dec. 8, you can save 10% on Target gift card purchases up to $300 in stores and online. Target announced the Sunday special, which is part of its weekend "HoliDeals," in a blog post.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/20 ... 610286001/

Pretty good return on investment (if you are going to shop at Target this year). Discover has 5% cash back at Target this month which makes the deal potentially even sweeter.
I guess it all could be much worse. | They could be warming up my hearse.

Good deal! We don't shop at Target but plenty of our friends do.

I will pass on this. I avoid Target completely given their well known and historical customer security issues.

If I ever went to Target to purchase anything, I would only use cash.

Are you aware of any concerning issues since the 2013 data breach? They seemed to take the appropriate response and possibly become more security conscious than the average retailer. For instance, they were the first to install chip credit card readers in my experience with the big retailers.

Anyway, thanks to the OP. I missed this deal last year.

Or any card with Apple Pay. Target then only gets a single-use number rather than your actual card number, even if they're hacked you're safe.

Good luck finding a place these days that doesn't have "historical customer security issues." Thanks, OP. I'll be there - with my c/c.

Will Target allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit card?

Some stores prohibit this.

Yes. I believe if you use the Target Credit Card you won't get an additional 5% off. Discover is offering 5% off this quarter.

This sounds great. Was just thinking same thing regarding Discover. They also match it in first year so it's 10% for new customers.

I’ve got a new Discover IT Card so for me it’s 10% + 10% or 20% off. But there’s nothing I want to buy there.

Nothing, huh? They have a variety of items. For example, they sell laundry detergent and body wash, in case you ever get dirt on you or sweat.

OK there’s probably stuff there I could use but if I buy a $100 gift card it’s going to take me a while to use it up, and I almost never go in there otherwise. The last time was in September 2017, I remember that cuz that’s when I bought my iPhone. :D

Look on the bright side. If you ever forget your social security number, you can find it in one of the data breaches.

Sorry to be the math Nazi but that's not how discounts stack. 0.9 X 0.9 = 0.81 or 19% off. OK close enough in this case. But think of when you stack 2 50% discounts - you get it for 75% off, not free!

The Discover Cashback Match works by matching all the cash back earned in the first year. So if your original cashback was $10, you will get another $10 at the end of the first year. So your total cashback doubles to $20; you don't just get back $19.

They're probably less likely than other stores to have a data breach going forward since they experienced the pain of having one a d paying for it so they'd probably have invested more resources to make sure it never happens again compared to a retailer than never had thst hit.

Yup, my wife works in global data security; there are breaches everywhere that you never hear about. There is unlikely any major retailer that hasn't had an issue similar (maybe not as big) to Target. We got a Target gift card from my employer for Thanksgiving; I never shop there and have no reason to. To me it just seems like a higher-priced WalMart.

Not to derail this, but what makes this a white elephant gift? Aren’t they meant to be funny (and probably not particularly useful)? I guess if you give it to a hedge fund manager with a personal staff, it would qualify.

It's one day a year - and I make sure I go to Target to get the full $300 of gift cards at a 10% discount. My family seems to like shopping at Target and it's a great way to save on holiday gift cards for the family. No other retailers seem to have this type of sale yet - which I find very surprising. I think this is part of their "secret sauce" that Target has been using to get more customers and be one of the winners in this so called brick and mortar "retail apocalypse". I use the B of A Cash Rewards credit card to get a good additional % in credit card rewards as well.

You should never use your Target Credit Card to buy a Target Gift Card. Since that's one of the few items you will not get any % back on. Always use a regular rewards credit card to purchase Target gift cards. I use the B of A Cash Back rewards card for this since I am a B of A Preferred Rewards member.

All my grandchildren love Target. Probably the younger one because they have lots of toys. Granddaughters like to shop Target for some of their clothes. Its funny watching them attempt to find the best deals when using their gift cards.

What I do to maximize the offer is to buy the Target card with my C.C. getting 5% back. Then use the g.c to buy laundry detergent, paper goods, cleaning supplies, Target then gives me a $15 gift card for making a purchase in this department for over $50. Hard to beat with very little effort.

Can you purchase the gift cards in store and get the 10% discount (up to $30 max) or is this only val8d by purchasing gift card on-line? I want to give the gift card as thank you’s and thus need the physical card as opposed to the value on my device.

Right, but you only get the 10% cash back on the $270 you pay, not the full $300. So you pay $270 - $27 = $243, or (300-243)/300 = 19% off

You’re right of course. I was just roughing it out. 19% is still pretty good. Edit: But after a discussion with my wife I decided against it. It’s more expensive there than at other stores so even with the discount we might not be getting such a good deal. We almost never shop there. And then we’d have the gift card hanging over our heads “gotta use it up”, too much bother and trouble, not worth it. At our level of net worth we’d never feel or notice the savings anyway.

Store purchases count, but might be problematical, as the store in my profile didn't have the values I was purchasing. I had planned for all mine to be mailed to my home (delivery date 12/19). There is no way I get near a store this time of year. They also offer an email delivery, and most every emailed gift card is easy to print and give, or simply forward to the recipient. I'm not worried about them coming by Christmas as they aren't Christmas gifts.

Most of mine were for $15. I give the grandchildren one for excellent grades, or other things like induction into National Elementary Honor Society, etc. Just something for "A job well done."

I used my Discover Card, but I forgot to use Rakuten, so I lost a 1% rebate.

Nope, read again. 10% already includes Discover match (which is 5% + 5%), the other 10% is the discount on the gift card that Target is running. Target charges you $90 for $100 gift card, then Discover rebates you $9. $81 spent for $100 of value.

Will Target allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit card?

Some stores prohibit this.
Yes. Did this last year.

Can you purchase the gift cards in store and get the 10% discount (up to $30 max) or is this only val8d by purchasing gift card on-line? I want to give the gift card as thank you’s and thus need the physical card as opposed to the value on my device.

You can purchase physical gift cards on the site and the discount applies. Site lets you choose from physical, email, or send by SMS.

But Discover let's you redeem the cash back rewards for some gift cards where it's like $50 gift cars for $45 in rewards to certain retailer...so technicay the new discover reward can be 10% of gross price instead of 9%.

Chase has 5% cashback for Paypal this quarter. If you purchase the Target giftcard online and checkout with Paypal (and pay via Chase), it'll be effectively 14.5% discount.

And you don't have to deal with the madness at the store & parking. Win-win :sharebeer

Getting a 14.5% discount through paypal is hard to pass up.

I shop mainly at Wal-Mart. Is there anything at Target that is usually cheaper than Wal-Mart? Don't want to save 14.5% on a gift card to pay for things that cost on average 15% more. This is the issue I have with Amazon gift cards.

Target is more expensive.
That's my general overall experience.
Can't quantify whether it is 10% or 15% or 20% more.
Wait until the next Black Friday and then use the gift cards.
That's when Target's prices are competitive with Amazon and Walmart.

Pretty good return on investment (if you are going to shop at Target this year). Discover has 5% cash back at Target this month which makes the deal potentially even sweeter.
I will pass on this. I avoid Target completely given their well known and historical customer security issues.

If I ever went to Target to purchase anything, I would only use cash.
I am sorry to hear of the issues. I like Target since they give a lot to the communities where they have stores. I don’t shop there too much since I don’t like the huge size of the stores.

They do a 15% off appliances sale in the fall every year (forget when exactly, maybe October) which tends to be a good deal. But that means holding onto the gift cards for almost a year.

The Target app lets you "store" gift cards electronically, so easier to keep track.

I live in the Twin Cities, the home of Target. You can't throw a stone without hitting one of their stores. In fact, Walmart took quite a while before they really expanded here because of the presence of all the Target stores.

I'm be going up to Target in a bit and buying a $300 gift card. Besides loving Target stores, I'm a Target stock holder. Ok, it's only 100 shares, but I bought them for $43/share and they're up to $125/share. :D

That's a draw for me. Such a simple idea, and I wish hotels.com would do the same. My Target is down the road; no idea where a Walmart is. And their fun kids' clothing (Cat and Jack brand) allows me to fulfill uncle obligations at very little cost. The only issue is that West Hollywood sales tax is more than 10% so I don't really come out ahead.

A little off-topic but since you mentioned hotels.com GCs: you can no longer combine balances from multiple GCs online but you can call in and have the rep do it for you.

How so? They have a new point of sale and payment system and spent a fortune to ensure it is secure. They are also one of the few merchants that uses CHIP and PIN for their own payment cards. I would guess (and I have no inside info) that their security is far better than many merchants in the USA, except perhaps Walmart who also spent fortunes improving their point of sale and payment security.

Note that Target does not allow you to purchase prepaid phone service refill cards with their gift cards. Too bad....

Thanks for the information. I bought a small one today (there are a couple of items I buy there periodically). To avoid any question as to whether I would get an additional 5% off with my Target care, I used my Discover card.

I found this option on the Target site:

Check your inbox on your birthday and celebrate with 5% off a shopping trip.*

Thanks for letting us know about the deal. I also used discover was gonna max out the 5% on an Amazon gift card prior to hearing this.

I find target worth it for us. They have some of the best priced disposable diapers to begin with and frequently give gift cards when you buy a certain dollar value of baby items. I also find their kids clothes fairly priced and pretty nice. To me it's a nicer walmart with generally comparable prices and much less crowded.
