2018 RAV4 Hybrid. Any known problem?

Post by Faith20879 » Mon Nov 18, 2019 9:47 am

I know there are some experienced car folks here. Hoping to gain some insights from you!

We are in the market for a 2018 RAV4. Test drove a hybrid and really like its quietness on both highway and local. However we have no experience with hybrid cars so are looking to learn more about the common issues of a hybrid.

Have read the reviews on edmunds, nhtsa, toyotanation but nothing jumped out. Is there other forums or blogs that we should also check out?

Would also really appreciate any comments from a RAV4 hybrid owner.

Thanks!

We've had that model for about 15 months. DW has repeatedly said it's the best car we've ever owned. Quiet and reasonably peppy. No issues. The main knock against it that I've seen is that it's"boring", so maybe not the best choice if you want to be entertained.

We just rented a 2019 for 4 days and really liked it. Easy to maneuver around town and comfortable on the highway. It's on our short list to purchase.

Good to hear. Not looking for a fun car, just a vehicle going from point A to B with the most comfort that our $$ can afford.

Thank you for taking the time.

The new series RAV4 Hybrid (2019) gets higher mileage: 41 city / 38 Highway vs. 34 city / 30 highway for the previous model.

You may never make up the cost in gas savings, but if you enjoy low fuel usage, it might be a consideration, especially as we're at the end of the 2019 model year.

Yes, did look at the 2019 model but DH does not like the new look&feel.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

For the 2019/2020 Rav4 models, the hybrid only adds $850 to the cost. This additional cost could easily be recovered in 2-3 years.

We've had a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid since November of 2017. We both absolutely love it, on a number of levels. Has been averaging about 35 in the city and 28-30 on the highway. Quiet and feels pretty luxurious for a $30k vehicle (we have the "Limited" version).

And not a trip to the dealer for anything except than the covered, regular maintenance. Probably the best utilitarian car we've ever owned.

To be 100% fair, it should be noted the hybrid is only $850 more than an AWD version. Not all buyers need AWD. The hybrid is significantly more expensive than the FWD.

Nothing systemic. Nobody makes a better hybrid system than Toyota. Period.

You can read owners' experiences on the RAV4 forum; here's the link for the MY 2019 hybrid:

Agreed.

We got almost 10 years of modest, completely problem-free use out of our 2010 Prius, which we sold a couple of months ago with 75,000 miles for 43% of what we paid for it when it was brand new. I'm certain that it has years and years of life left in it.

It was so incredibly boring to drive, though. We'd never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever own another one.

Avis gave me one of the new RAV4s recently, and it was very cheap/crude inside, hopelessly underpowered, and really uncomfortable to drive after about 30 minutes on the open freeway. The engine was also very noisy, but that should be less of an issue with the hybrid.

Good luck, OP, with whatever you decide.
