Madza CX-5 2018 vs 2019

Post by bruingent » Thu Nov 07, 2019 11:23 am

Hi, I am in the market to buy the Mazda CX-5. I can afford either, but I am interested in the best bang for the bucks.

I plan to get a FWD, no turbo engine

I am deciding between 2018 and 2019 model

If you recommend 2018 then which trim should I get for the best bang for the bucks?

If you recommend 2019 then which trim should I get for the best bang for the bucks?

Thanks

What features are of value to you? you are probably looking at deciding between Touring and Grand Touring trims. a quick look at the 2019 review at kbb.com says this about the trim differences:
Speaking of the Touring trim, it’s another $2,265, but it’s well worth stretching the budget. It brings a power-adjustable driver’s seat, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, self-leveling headlights with automatic high beams, two rear USB charging ports, and an array of driver aids (adaptive cruise control, Smart Brake Support and lane-departure warning/assist). Grand Touring models have leather seating, 10-speaker Bose audio system, and navigation. Further options include all-wheel drive (Grand Touring and Signature have that as standard), head-up display, heated steering wheel and heated rear outboard seats.

so if you want leather, bigger sound system, navigation, HUD, or extra heated stuff, consider GT.

I'm not sure which would be the best bang for your buck. How do you define bang? If you don't care about leather or a nice sound system, don't pay extra for it. If you do, pay extra for it. I'm not aware of significant differences between the 2018 and 2019 model, but you might be able to get a deal on a 2018 still in inventory?

The best bang for your buck, is always the lowest price trim. You get the car, the engine, everything that matters. The "extras" is where they fleece buyers. You can option a car to cost 40% more - same engine, same car - not much value in that, IMO. Especially with most cars coming very well equipped feature and safety-wise at this point.

If you prefer brand new, see if you can get a deal on a leftover new 2019. If you don't care, you can try for CPO with an extended warranty - or for the absolute lowest price and most bang - try shopping for a private party sale.

Completely agree. If you are just trying to get the best "bang for your buck", it's a no-brainer that it is the base model. Up to you to decide how much those options are worth to you, but since you (generally) can't get exactly what you want a la carte, I've never purchased anything but the base.

non turbos have a cylinder deactivation problem that a software patch is supposed to fix, but jury still out. If money is not a factor, get the turbo..you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I are on our second Mazda CX-5 (a 2018). We love this one and the last one we had. Great vehicle for the money.

We just got a 2019 CX-5 Grand touring (non turbo) - the features you want will determine how much you will spend.
Best bang for the buck is entirely relative to those features.

Best bang for the buck would include blind spot monitoring, lane change, adaptive cruise. If any of those kept you out of an accident it would pay for itself and then some.

When my daughter chose the Grand Touring model she wanted to be safe and I couldn't argue with her spending a couple thousand more for that.

Same here - the car is also worth more when selling or trade in.

Would you buy the 2018 or 2019 model? The 2020 is coming out as well and should be this November?
