Folks age between 65-70. What’s your exercise routine

Post by retire14 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 8:39 pm

Just curious. Are you in good physical shape? What’s your exercise routine for aerobic, strength, flexibility and balance? Do you scale back as you age?

I enjoy the fitness app on my phone and like to keep track of the miles walked. I seem to get in 2 to 3 miles on an average day.

I also do some exercises for my back, including crunches.

65 yoa, currently walk/run 8-10 miles per day with a little weight training thrown in. Looking to increase the mileage gradually. No medical issues so far, thankfully.

Wife and I both 66. We’ve both been working out since our mid 20’s. I was a competitive runner until 60, then transitioned to cycling and power walking to save my joints. We belong to the local Y. We also use Apple Watches to track our fitness activities

Wife does Body Pump 4 X week and power walking at least 5 x week.

I do Intermediate weight lifting on machines 3 X week, and power walk 6 X week. Cycling outdoors when weather permits.

Stretching is a VERY important part of our fitness routine, both before and after. We also use stairs instead of elevators, and purposely park further than we can to get extra steps in. I’m 5’8” 145#, and wife is 5’3” 110. Health is so far, so good....

I was a runner who ran for 48 years. Gave it up and switched over to swimming 1200 meters 4 days per week. Walk on off swim days. Also do planks and modified sit ups five days per week. I'm 67 and I've been told by my physician in excellent condition.

67 year old male. Tennis 1-2 times per week. Pickleball 1-2 times per week. Strength training and stretching 3 times per week. I average 80,000 steps per week on Fitbit. I try to keep my resting heart rate below 60. Gets harder each year due to injuries.

At 51 and 67, we have discovered Miranda Edmond-White and find her approach straightforward and easy to do at home. The most basic stretches relieved long term back pain that months of physical therapy didn't touch. She has a long running show on PBS and a good book "Aging Backwards".

67 yr. old male in good health. Nothing truly systematic and I don't record anything. I do what I want when I want weather & other things permitting. This actually turns out to be quite a bit. Do much of grocery shopping walking with day pack and also walk to public library athletic events & music concerts etc. (about 1 mile one way). Bicycle in nearby rural areas for recreation. XC ski in season. Lots of day hikes & bicycling (both touring & mtn. bicycle) for various reasons and various locations. Trying to get back into longer duration & distance which I used to do a lot

69 male. C2 Concept rowing machine, 20 minutes (below 2'12'' split time 500 meters) alternate with 35 minute outdoor cycling on somewhat hilly route. Been pretty good runner last 40 years or so but this took a toll on joints hence rowing/cycling.
I like it so it's a routine not a chore.

65 here. Play doubles tennis 3 days a week. On alternate days do strength exercises on cybex machines and dumbbells. So anywhere from 5-6 days a week. Walk the dog daily and do yard work. Feel good most days with occasional joint issues (not serious). Participate in Senior Games each year with football and softball throw and high jump.

65 yo female, good health. No routine, but routine practices.
Sit on floor instead of chairs whenever reasonable - reading books or bogleheads, on phone, screen time. Get up without using hands or knees. Stretch while on floor.
Park as far from businesses as possible, carry groceries instead of using a cart.
Kayak every week.

I lift weights 5 days a week at a gym (push/pull routine) and now have added balance exercises also. Something of a gym rat I'm told; I take every 8th week off from the gym to let my body rest and recover.) I don't do aerobic exercises at the gym other than about 10 minutes to warm up, usually using a rowing machine. I stretch for 30 minutes a day, first thing. My aerobic exercise is my yard work with 1/2 acre of gardens is constant except in Dec., Jan. and Feb. when I am working on projects (this winters will be building a new trellis and clearing out some ditches and redoing the main perennial bed). Digging holes for shrubs, moving mulch and top soil is hard work. Its all done by hand, except for the push mower. I have cervical and spinal stenosis and peripheral neuropathy, so walking can be painful, but I push though it or use stools at times.

Me 65, 6'1", 157; DW 65 5'11, 145.

Me: Run daily 6-8 miles; 20 minutes 4X per week on a home weight machine. No joint issues because of light frame and running mostly on sand.

DW: Pilates 2X per week; walks 5X per week 3 miles, also on the beach.

I run a 5K at a 10 min/mile pace twice per week for cardio and do a round on the lifting/resistance machines in the gym twice per week for strength. During hiking season I do 8-10 mile hikes with 1,000' to 2,000' of elevation to replace the runs. I also like to ride my bike, usually 10-20 miles on off-road paved trails.

I used to work out six days per week but it takes my body longer to recover now so I've cut back to about four days per week. My cardio health is excellent and I want to keep it that way. Fortunately my knees have held up well but I only run on the treadmill now - no more running on the pavement.

We do the gym 3-4 days a week. I do various aerobic machines as well as moderate strength training. Other days are either walking or bicycle. I’m in a bike club and my rides with them average 20 miles. Our walks are 3-4 miles. I’ve been active my whole life. I’m not a fanatic about any physical activity now. It’s just part of the life routine. I’m 70 and DW is 67.

2. One hour yoga class once a week.
3. Walk two or three miles two or three times a week.

age 75, retired 9 years. I have always been active in sports but only sport I still play is golf and I try to walk the course whenever allowed. I jogged about 5 times a week until age 63 and knees and back could no longer tolerate it. Now I either walk 2 to 3 miles a day or go to gym and do elliptical and 12 routines on exercise machines for maintaining strength and agility. I rarely miss a day doing one or the other. I did yoga once a week for about a year until I injured my back. I still do some yoga exercises on my own, especially for balance and core. I have included swimming as my aerobic exercise but have not done that for a couple of years. Also have bicycled as a substitute.

I am in good health for my age but it is a challenge at times with various ailments: back, knee, shoulder. I have had asthma since age of 3 and had major knee surgery (from soccer) 40 years ago, but I try to not have those or other issues slow me down. However, staying active and fit is essential to maintain good health. I am blessed to be where I am.

An hour or so on an elliptical. Swimming was the default until shoulder problems emerged.

Unclear what OP's objective is , so I'll just put out there that walking 30 minutes working up to an hour per day is a great simple objective (if your current lifestyle is more sedentary and you aren't doing that).

Age 70 something. First thing in the morning is about 5 minutes of some very simple back exercises. They totally prevent a frequently aching back that plagued me for years. Thank you physical therapy guru! :beer

Second thing, at no particular time of day, is a couple of miles of brisk walking. Thank you skilled knee replacement surgeon! :beer

Currently:

Rowing (indoor rower) - 5000 meters (a little more than 25 min), 3 times a week.
Strength training once a week (eventually I’d like to do this twice a week).
My pedometer shows an average of roughly 6000 steps (two miles) a day.

I should note that throughout my life, my primary form of exercise was walking. When I was younger, I was able to walk for as long as I wanted, as far as I wanted, but after 2005 (when I was in my 50s) that changed. By the end of 2017, I was only able to walk for 10-15 minutes at a time, and it was a real struggle to do this.

I thought it was just because I was older and a lot fatter. However, this turned out NOT to be the case. Being diagnosed with sleep apnea and starting to use a CPAP machine in early 2018 was life-changing because I was able to start moving again, even though I still had arthritis and was just as old and fat as I was in 2017.

After I started using the CPAP, I wanted to purchase a treadmill for daily exercise, but since I live in an apartment, I figured that the noise and vibration from a treadmill might be hard on my downstairs neighbor. Instead, I rented and eventually purchased a rowing machine. It’s very quiet and gives me a more strenuous workout than the treadmill. I think one of the reasons I enjoy rowing is that I’m using my entire body. In addition to rowing, I’m also now able to walk for longer periods of time and hope to be able to eventually start hiking again.

Long story short, I would encourage anyone who is having difficulty engaging in exercise to make sure there isn’t an underlying medical problem contributing to this.

Age 65. M-Sat 30 minutes on bicycle (plantar fascitis eliminates walking/treadmill). MWF modified stronglifts program, not using free weights any more due to some shoulder pain and stopped deadlifts after having a hernia repair. Use cable machines for upper body and seated squat machine.

We're all different. I've found (currently 72) 30 minutes walking six days a week, stationary bike 30 minutes for four days a week, and 30 minutes vigorous swimming five days a week helps me stay stronger and fitter without the risks of overuse in any one area. Swimming is usually difficult for most people but I bought a swim snorkel and it has been a game changer--for the better.

All the best

Treadmill at 4mph for 50 minutes every day. I listen to podcasts while I'm on the treadmill, so I am "multitasking". I have 40 podcasts in the rotation, and am always looking out for more good content.

Also, do the machines at my local Planet Fitness four days a week for about an hour.

At age 66, I feel just about as good as I did when I was 40. Hope I can keep it up.

Early 70s, retired. MWF at gym for 45 minute all body workout with weights, preceded and ended with stretching. TR playing hockey for 1.5 hours with an over 50 group, sometimes with over 60 group. Saturday or Sunday biking, with one day off for recovery. In summer and fall, more biking and less hockey. In winter work things around to incorporate 2 or 3 days downhill skiing every other week. Slowed down a bit due to prostate radiation last winter, but still was able to maintain most activities. As an aside, I recently went with CBD topical cream for back and shoulder aches and pains, and it's worked amazingly well.
This time, like all times, is the best of times if we but know what to do with it.

Age 69, retired last year. Run several times a week in the 5 to 10k range. Mostly on packed soil or crushed stone (unpaved rail-trail-type surface), and never two days in a row. Much easier on me than when I was running on pavement. I'm six feet and overweight, but since I stopped running on pavement ( mostly) my joints have been ok, as long as I stretch. Also do a resistance machine routine at Planet Fitness a few times a week. I'm getting more exercise than I ever did when I was working, because I have more time available. Discretionary time is a great benefit of retirement.

Retired, late 60s. I've always been active especially with tennis. I play doubles tennis 3-5x/week, pickleball here and there and swim a bit almost every day. I occasionally go to our health club where I bicycle and do some weights, and also walk 1- 2 miles when not doing other things and weather is not too hot. Overall I don't feel a major overall letdown in my abilities vs. 20 years ago. I'm lucky in that I don't have major injuries and enjoy movement. Activity definitely relaxes me. Try to stay active even if you don't feel like it, continue to challenge yourself.
Those who move forward with a happy spirit will find that things always work out.

Formal exercise like walking is optimal, but not without a great variety of daily activity when you're not exercising or sleeping. The most important thing is to change body positions from sitting/lying to standing, or vice versa, throughout the day. Posture, head position, and stretching are also important.

At 77, my main formal exercise is walking in the hills and also rugged hiking. Down-hill walking is especially good for improving insulin sensitivity. About every ten days I'll do a series of energizing uphill sprints. I also do isometrics for upper body. (I'm doing some right now between sentences.)

During the day I stay active and stretch, slowly stand up, slowly sit down, and practice balance including with eyes closed. Also, do monkey walk in four different directions and do yoga. Yoga and Tai Chi are effective for the stabilizer muscles. But every movement counts: dressing, cooking, sweeping, brushing teeth, washing dishes/car, etc.

I think NASA scientist Joan Vernikos has the best perspective on "exercise". Read her book Sitting Kills based on her studies of the astronauts physical deterioration in a gravity-free environment.

Age 68. Osteoarthritis is my bane. Full hip replacement at end of 2016. I hit the floor daily when I get out of bed for 15 to 20 minutes doing lower back exercises to help me get moving. I found a low impact aerobics class at a local senior center. 3 days/week, 1 hr/day. We exercise to walking routine tapes. Leslie Sansone and Jessica Smith are the most used ones. I live in a semi-rural area so walking the dog and various outdoor maintenance activities weather permitting. I have an exercise bike for indoor days and usually do about 6mi or so on that if I can't get out. I also use an inversion table to help stretch my lower back vertebrae. I found the most important thing is to keep moving as the body will allow.

At age 75 (now 79) after spouse died my kids purchased puppy for me to take care of. We, the dog and I, walk about 3 miles per day and frequent several parks in the area. My dog goes virtually everywhere with me. The walking keeps both of us in fairly good physical condition.

2 - 3 times a week - stretching then pullups and pushups then Concept2 rowing machine x 30 minutes (rowing is the best - no impact, total body, weather not a factor); all done on my sun porch at home so I have no excuse which is why I quit saying "I'll go to the gym" but didn't and got very good at finding a reason not to drive the fifteen minutes to get there; diet also is important - lay off the carbs!! I'm 73, still working, and find that all days are good, some are just better than others...

Joined a Lifetime Fitness when I turned 65. Typical workout:

Treadmill for 20-25 minutes.
Yoga stretches 30 minutes
Weight lifting/sit ups/push ups 30 min.
Solo basketball (if court avail.) 30 min.

During summer months I swim rather than treadmill.

Sometimes I go to classes, or the cycle room.

Yeah, I spend a lot of time there. On days I don't go, I often take the dog for a one hour walk.

Someone hear said they do 130 pushups - was that a typo? Holy Moly, if true.

At age 75 (now 79) after spouse died my kids purchased puppy for me to take care of. We, the dog and I, walk about 3 miles per day and frequent several parks in the area. My dog goes virtually everywhere with me. The walking keeps both of us in fairly good physical condition.
I totally agree with this! What a great gift from your kids!!

IMO, a dog can increase the quality of life in so many ways. Not only with respect to physical activity, but also emotionally and having a sense of structure. Cats and other pets are also enjoyable but dogs are so helpful because most of them LOVE to go on walks. So, there is a sense of responsibility one has (usually) to take the dog for a walk. Getting outside, being in the sunshine and breathing fresh air is so good for you. :D

In fact, there have been a number of research studies about this topic (dogs and human longevity).

E.g. NY Times

"Dog Owners Live Longer

By Nicholas Bakalar

Nov. 22, 2017

A Swedish study suggests that owning a dog is linked to a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death.

Researchers used demographic data on 3.4 million Swedes ages 40 to 80. In Sweden, all dogs are registered with the Swedish Board of Agriculture and identified by number with an ear tattoo or a subcutaneous chip.

Anyone with a record of cardiovascular disease before the 12-year study began was excluded, and the researchers controlled for age, sex, marital status, income and other factors. Owning a dog was associated with a 20 percent lower risk of all-cause death and a 23 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The study is in Scientific Reports."

Do twenty minutes with dumbbells and rubber cords on M,W, F and similar time with floor exercises and stretches on T, T, S.

64.5 yo. 4 years retired.

Last 10 years of a 40 year career left me badly out of shape. In retirement with lots of time on my hands I decided to become a gym rat and get back into the shape I was in during my 20s and 30s.

To that end -

30-45 minutes weights (mostly circuit training on machines) 4-5 days a week,
plus 6-8 hours a week racquet sports - racquetball, tennis, pickleball, and doubles ping pong,
plus 1 hour yoga (1 class) per week, and 3 hours of Pilates (3 classes) per week,
plus 2.5 mile walk approx 6 days a week,
plus 400 yard swim 3 times a week (not in summer months, kids out of school, pool is nasty).

With the exception of weight training and swimming, all other activities are done in "play" mode with either wife or friends so it doesn't seem like exercise as much as just being out playing and having fun. So far so good in terms of strength, stamina, and health improving over time.

Hope to continue some variation of this weekly routine as long as I am physically able. Some of the racquet sports, like racquetball, will probably be the first to be discontinued as my body continues to age. In my location there are lots of folks into their 70s that are in great shape and follow similar schedules.

69 year old male. I have been doing yoga for 50 years, still do, but have also discovered Egoscue, really like the routine. For cardio, elliptical trainer for 30 minutes, hikes up to 10 or 12 miles, and a little pickleball.

Here's a nice video that shows what you need to be fit -
