Key Ring

Post by rich126 » Fri Oct 18, 2019 11:08 am

Admittedly a minor, low cost item but something used multiple times a day, everyday.

I have an ancient key ring. I think it was a Ford Mustang key ring from 30 years ago. The "Mustang" thing was removed years ago. It is a typical (and here goes a very non-technical description) thing where you try to spread apart the 2 ring things and slide a new key or item onto it. It has mostly done its job.

My problem now is that I have a security alarm control that I need to carry along with the keys. It has a small ring on it but it is so thin that over a few days it manages to come off the key ring (like today when I was out and noticed it was missing). Fortunately I can use my phone most of the time to turn off the alarm but I'd rather not risk losing the alarm controller.

Anyone have any recommendations of key rings that allow easy but secure adding/removing of keys and items such as security alarm controllers and bar code tags used by gyms? At times you want to quickly remove some keys, such as when you are dropping off the car and don't want the dealer, etc. to have all of your keys (or you need them to get into the house!).

I'm in the process of searching Amazon right now. Since I haven't kept up with key rings I thought maybe someone would have a good suggestion :)

Wire key chains work well. Here is an example Pawfly 25 Pack Wire Keychain Cable 6 inch Stainless Steel Key Ring Loop for Outdoor Hiking https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FCHKJV6/re ... QDb9YFKR30

Buy this 5-pack, wait 2 months for shipping, then enjoy them.

Replace the small ring on the alarm control. If the hole is too small, drill it out bigger. Plastic can often be drilled at slow revolutions.

I use this FreeKey thing to add/remove my car keys almost every day from my apartment key fob since I live in a big city and don't want to bother carrying the car keys if I'm not planning to drive anywhere. FreeKey 2825 Key Hook System with 3 Group Rings

Cheap carabiners make it easy to take or leave keys

Don't remove the small ring on the alarm control, just add a bigger ring onto it.

You can get all this stuff at the local HW store, amazon is just for the pictures.

How can they possibly charge just seventy-five cents USD for five of these with free shipping from Hong Kong? They’ve got to be losing money on this deal. I don’t need any but at this price how can I refuse?

I use one of those mini carabiners ... got a package of several at the dollar store and use the small one in combination with small regular key rings.
A long time back, i can remember seeing people use shower curtain hooks

I had the same type of issue needing "hot-swappable" key chain system and found a set that I like.

It's kinda like a compression fitting, I put my house keys on one side and the car keys of whatever vehicle I'm taking for the day
Do a search for: Interstate Pneumatics Y90KR Quick Coupler Key Chain , mine is similar to this but a little more robust.
