How much do you spend on cellular annually?

Post by m524e » Mon Oct 14, 2019 9:08 pm

Back storey: I spend $1000/year on cellular service. I have T-Mobile amplified at $70/month (unlimited data) and AT&T prepaid at $25/month (8 gb, paid annually). I travel around 60k miles per year (> 25 segments) on Delta and frequently use the T-Mobile for gogo inflight internet and tethering while in the hotel (when I could use slower, free wifi). I also have a remore home, which only gets T-Mobile service. I tether upwards of 50 gb/month when there, but only visit it twice a year. I have DSL internet at that house, but it's quite slow and I like to stream shows in the evenings. At my primary residence, T-Mobile is mediocre, but I get blazing faster internet from my ISP. My home ISP runs about $840/year.

I feel like I'm over paying for cellular and for internet at my primary residenxe. I only fully utilize my T-Mobile service about one quarter out of the year. I have AT&T too as I live in an area not covered well by T-Mobile. When I'm not traveling, I'm using most of the 8gb on my AT&T plan.

How much do you pay on cellular and internet per year and how do you justify it? I think I could get away with the 25/month plan for cellular, but am always worried about excessive usage when I'm away from home. This would save me $840/year. Those on fixed cellular data plans, do you worry about usage? For those of you on unlimited cellular plans, do you really need it and if not how do you justify the expenditure? For those leaving unlimited plans, how did you diminish the fear of losing unlimited data?

Internet (Cox 10 Mbps) - $44.99/month = $539.88 Annually
My Cell Phone (Tello 1GB Data + Unlimited Text) - $6.00/month = $72 Annually
Wife's Cell Phone (RedPocket 500 Voice, 500 Text, 200Mb) - $3.01/month = $36.12 Annually
Daughter's Phone (FreeUp 100 Voice, 100 Text, 100mb) - $0/Month = $0 Annually

Total phone and internet charges (3 phones and internet) = $54.00 per month = $648 Annually

I do not worry about usage, the Tello plan has unlimited 2G data, the RedPocket plan will shut off once it runs out and the the data is completely shut off on my daughter's phone.

We do not have cable tv and stream about 90% of what we watch at home. Never an issue with 10mbps.

$420/yr, for 5gb a month, on Cricket (AT&T network). I occasionally go over my cap near the end of the month and have to deal with super slow speed or find WiFi for a couple of days. Usually no problem unless I'm traveling for work. Wife pays the same. $720/yr for ~100Mbps from Time Warner (dense small town).

In my experience, unlimited data is sorely overrated, especially if you only have peak usage a few times a year. The tethering is really what sets you apart from the average cellular consumer. If you could figure out an alternative or find a plan tailored to business travelers you could likely save some money. Perhaps you could get a hotspot and a usage based plan for that, then rightsize your regular plan to a more common level of usage?

$120 / M, or $1440 a year on 4 lines, unlimited everything in US. And 2G or 3G almost everywhere abroad.

Around $750 a year for two phones. My wife and I split a 2-line 30gb data unlimited talk/text $~62 monthly plan (including tax) through Total Wireless, which runs off the Verizon network.

The best "hot spot" plan I've found is the $35 prepaid unlimited iPad plan from AT&T. I've been able to put it in an LTE modem connected to a router and it ran fine; it didn't seen much of a slowdown past 22gb either. I would actually recommend it to those with good AT&T service in their area.

The problem is that AT&T doesn't work where I need it too :(. I've tried Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, but the only one with speeds that make it worthwhile above DSL is T-Mobile. The question I keep coming back to is need vs want. It is true I work when I'm out here, but it is also true that I can probably do it DSL speeds. The other option is to cancel the DSL and just tether drom the phone (but then the service won't be available when I'm not there, so not remote home stuff). I do travel internationally, and T-Mobile is okay for that. Although of recent, I've just picking up a local sim -- I use to have Google Fi, which had fantastic speeds abroad, but the speed slow down after 16gb? domestically made me shift away from it.

Consequently, I'm curious as to what others are spending and their rational for it. I do feel like I'm getting my money's worth a couple months per year, but losing it the other. It's just nice to get a feeling for what others are doing and hopefully be exposes to options I haven't considered :).

I have Cox in AZ and pay $40 for 30 Mbps. 10 is pretty low but would get you 2 Netflix streams at one time since 5 Mbps is a decent estimate for 1080p. For 4K you may need 25 Mbps per stream.

Back to the OP I’m around 60 for 2 Gig.

10mbps is more than enough for us. $44.99 is the standard price with no promos. I don't feel like playing the promo game for faster speeds (they offer 12-month upgrades to 30mbps for an additional $5 all of the time) - especially when it is not needed.

$1140 per year for my wife and I.

Cell phone - Consumer cellular 2 lines and 3gb data for 45.00 month.
ATT uverse (fiber to the house) internet - $50 month.
No cable TV
No landline

Use HD antenna for OTA programming and an OTA Tivo box plus stream Netflix and Amazon Prime. - so another $276 per year.

For 3 lines, total annual cost is $772.32 ($64.36 per month for unlimited talk, text and 10 GB of data). We switched from Verizon to Consumer Cellular about a year ago and couldn't be happier. For us, their $20 charge per month for each line is more than fair. And since there's no contract, we can leave anytime we choose.

Total annual cost of $480, including all taxes and fees. Comcast internet is $33/mo, and Xfinity mobile (2 lines) will vary from $5.50-$9/mo. The higher month(s) reflects service during our annual trip abroad.

We have Tracfones and pay $55 each per year for cellular phone service, use this in cars for emergency and ordering pizzas. (get that $55 or 60 by ordering a year after first adding 1 month).
We do not need any smart phones and their computer service because we are retired and have PCs with access to highspeed internet (around $70 per month) via cable, my PC has a 27 inch screen where I can show multiple tasks and do not need to wear glasses. We also have a Wifi used with Ipad and laptop. We also do not need GPS via smart phones because our traveling is limited - we know our area very well, have maps in cars, and know our path to Cape Cod for vacation also very well, are doing that for 40 years.

This is one of those questions where the answers really don't matter because there are so many variables.

My wife and I pay $48 per month for unlimited service. Sounds great.

If that was the end of my post, you'd be missing a bunch of info. We don't use a lot of high speed data because we use WiFi. Rarely do we exceed 0.5gb of data a month. Once in a blue moon 2gb when we're traveling. So we looked at options, and thought Google Fi looked interesting, priced it out, and came out at the $48 a month or so. We then contacted our sons that live elsewhere but still share our unlimited plan - and they use a ton of data a month because it's faster than WiFi. Some months they exceed 20gb of data. We told them that IF we remain on the plan (which they need because it needs 4 or more people), we'd pay $48 and they'd pick up the rest. They agreed, added some family members, and they pay the balance after we pay $48 total.

People are comparing apples, bananas, and oranges, and need - international, within home due to other available options - totally messes with that.

We also pay $20 per month for 25 MBPS internet service.

$157.20 annually for two people on TracFone.
It breaks down as follows: 2 x $6.55/month (each) x 12 months/year = $157.20/year.

$420 annually with Cricket, on the AT&T network.

It's $35/month, unlimited talk and text, 5 GB of data. If you go over data, there's no additional charge, they just slow you down until the next billing cycle. (I've only come close once in 2 years.)

How much do you pay on cellular and internet per year and how do you justify it? For those of you on unlimited cellular plans, do you really need it and if not how do you justify the expenditure?
Justification of needs vs. wants?

Part of being connected includes needs, and part of being connected includes wants. Each individual and household has different needs and wants, as well as the income to direct a portion of that towards discretionary expenses - or the wants side of being connected. Work requires the connectivity portion for data on the mobile devices as well as the hardware used in our home. The packaged content is purely in the wants category for entertainment, news, sports, music, etc... .

Work provides a discount for our unlimited mobile devices plan.
$166 per month for the family (4 phone lines & one cellular watch).

Home internet (unlimited high speed) is packaged with cable and we have a larger plan than the basic cable package.
$210 per month for the bundled package.

$376 per month ($12.36 per day) to be connected with a dose of needs & wants thrown into the mix. We spend $182 per day on our total household needs, wants and variable expenses, so our connectivity and entertainment provided totals 6.7% of our daily expenses.

TMobile - 2 lines - over 55 promotion - found out about the promotion on this site -$60/month including all taxes. $720/year or $360/line/year. New rate looks like $27.50 per line.

5 lines at Cricket Wireless (Unlimited Cricket More Plan) for $160/month. That is $32/line. Mobile Hotspot for each phone. $1,920 for the full year.

Previously we were on the 5 for $125/month Unlimited Core plan. We had more scenarios where the hotspot was valuable, so I upgraded this summer. The faster data speeds are also nice. 3 vs 8.

Would I like to spend less? Yes. Can I spend less? Yes. We are in a flyover state where T-Mobile and Sprint are not good. So, we stick with AT&T (or Verizon) for coverage. I am always looking at new/better plans that maximizes cost and features.

Seems like if you are traveling and working remote, the company would provide means to work remotely?

I travel quite a bit, and have a company provided iPhone and iPad... no personal phone.

My wife and son’s “plans” are $35/ month (each) for 3GB Unlimited through straight talk, so.... $840 annually. Both using my previous versions of iPhones.

Wife and I have Consumer Cellular, we're paying just under $80/month for two lines, unlimited talk and texting, 25 Gb data / month.

We’re also retired, have PC at home and iPads to connect to WiFi when traveling. However smartphone provides services that our PC can’t duplicate. Simple example - our phone is used as a gps when driving, particularly valuable when away from home in rental cars or just walking. No data is used or required for the gps app.

But you pay up to twice what we pay ($80 a year for 2 lines, including international travel expenses) for our smartphones.

I spend about $50 a year with H2O wireless. I put on about $10 every three months and mostly use google voice. I have access to wifi about 90% of the time, so it works for me. I am thinking about going a bit crazy and switching to mint mobile, they have some good deals if you buy a year at a time.

My wife and I spend about $600 per year for our two smart phones - on our son's Sprint plan (he has 4 phones on the plan - he, his wife, my wife and I). The phones are now fully paid for - they were each $6 per month for about 20 months.
We get unlimited phone, text and data. The plan also includes HULU.
I actually use a lot of data by watching youtube videos.

Our son found a really good deal - and invited us to be on his plan. Saves us quite a bit from our old plan.

Total annual cost of $480, including all taxes and fees. Comcast internet is $33/mo, and Xfinity mobile (2 lines) will vary from $5.50-$9/mo. The higher month(s) reflects service during our annual trip abroad.
I looked at Xfinity mobile, and it wants $12 a month for 1GB and 2 phones. How do you get it for < $10? Also, don't know if additional taxes and fees

I’ve had Xfinity going on 2 years; our plan is free unlimited voice & text along with 0.1G of data. We use almost no data, so our 2 lines usually cost $0 plus around $5.50/mo for taxes & fees. Also when we started our 2 LG phones cost $1 with a promotion. Essentially free phones and free service, that has been perfect and an improvement and $750/yr savings over our previous AT&T plan.

Our plan is grandfathered, and I think you are correct regarding the new plan

$960/yr for 2 AT&T unlimited lines on BIL's family plan
we are fairly high data users.

About $300 per year, through Consumer Cellular. I don't use all that much data. I fit comfortably in their lowest tier of 500 MB, for $10 per month plus taxes and fees. I always have lots of minutes left over at their basic tier. Last time I looked they met my needs at a low price, just about tied with other low-cost options.

Even the recently announced $20 per month for life* from Altice, after taxes and fees, wouldn't be cheaper.

The reason I don't use much phone data is I'm able to meet most of my needs via my unmetered ISP and laptop.

* Life is not your life. It's the life of your being a customer of Altice in other ways. I find them expensive as an ISP but the only other option available here matches their price increases. I'm not alleging price fixing. I think the other company just looks at Altice's website to track prices, because they mostly follow percentage increases but with a lag.

TMobile - 2 lines - over 55 promotion - found out about the promotion on this site -$60/month including all taxes. $720/year or $360/line/year. New rate looks like $27.50 per line.
Yes, but notice that the 27.50/line price does not include taxes and fees, but the 35/month price does include taxes and fees. Pretty sneaky if you ask me. :x The 27.50 is probably going to be well over 30 after they add in all the taxes and fees.

$157.20 annually for two people on TracFone.
It breaks down as follows: 2 x $6.55/month (each) x 12 months/year = $157.20/year.
Nicholas, I'm using a tracfone card for 365 service days. Costs vary depending on the timing of my purchase. Lowest I've gotten is $99 for 1 year.

I'd like to know what your plan is. How many minutes, texts and data do you get?

Thank you

Shared 12GB plan for three iPhones on Verizon. Wife and I contribute about $90 month ($1080 annually) and don't use much data. Daughter still on plan and uses the majority of the data. We can and will find a cheaper plan at some point but for now it's okay. Service is rock solid.

Biggest apples/oranges is comparing one person to a household with several. Also OP title is cellular but then expanded to internet.

Cell: $300/person/yr, Cricket $25/mo per person, $1500 total, 5 people incl 3 people who don't live in the house
Internet: $510/person/yr, $1020 total, divided just by the two people who live in the house

Also not much practical value to hear what internet costs here v there, unlikely anyone is going to relocate just for that. :happy (it might be a symptom of generally higher/lower COL but that's why you might move, not internet particularly).

On phone plans there's a been umpteen threads. We notice no performance difference between Cricket at $1500/yr 5 people 'unlimited' and ~$2280/yr of basic charges on 15GB ATT proper plan for same 5 people we had before, we'd also pay a few $100 in overages per year. Some other people might.

If I were traveling 60 k miles a year and staying at a second home a few weeks/months a year, I would consider the T mobile plan a worthwhile expense. I would only change it if I had something similar but cheaper to replace it worth.

The life of the OP is so very different from many of the people posting about rarely using cellular data.

I would be questioning whether you are taking advantage of the blazing ISP speed at home. Could you save anything there? I pay $70 a month for mediocre speeds. But Comcast has no incentive to offer anything better since the only alternative is DSL at <2 Mbps. I was at $90 a month for 200 Mbps but took the price drop when the $70 plan went up to 75 Mbps . No practical difference except when downloading a bunch of Netflix videos for a trip.

Wow, some of the figures here seem nuts. I did not realize it cost so much. I have a pay-as-you-go plan that I spend about $60 a year on, so about $5 a month.

I catch up with friends or family when I am home during weeknights or weekends, so using Skype or any one of the several free messaging apps I have on my phone is totally free using home internet. I don't have a data plan at all so I've never watched movies on my phone or anything like that. I usually read on my Kindle if I have a spot of free time instead of loading up some entertainment on my phone. I also have free internet at work, so as long as I'm at work or at home, I am completely reachable for free.

Hmm, do you really spend that much time on your phones to justify the hundreds of dollars you are spending every year?

I might be switching over to my boyfriend's plan soon though. He is the type of person who will call me in the middle of a workday just to ask me how my day is going, and he refuses to simply wait until I get home to catch up on our respective days. He finds it ridiculous that I can go from 8 - 6 p.m. just working and going about my day without touching base with him ... so I think I will be getting a free plan soon. I actually like my current set up because I don't like the idea of people just constantly ringing me on my phone. I like to be able to schedule time to have a proper conversation and otherwise be un-disturbed.

Mint Mobile prices are very hard to beat. When our Metro 6-month minimum on our free phones is up, we're going to give Mint a try.

AFAIK Metro is still giving away up to two free Samsung A20 phones if you port in your number(s). These are really free (unlike some other "free" offers), but can't be ported out for 6 months and you have to run on their $80-for-two-lines plan though (fees included).

Tmobile 55+ plan (mother & I, father & brother), $30 per line including taxes & fees. $360 per person per year. Unlimited everything. Their current plan is supposedly not as good, but still seems competitive.

$20/line per month, two lines between wife and I. $480 a year. We pay her sister who controls the family plan. T-Mobile.
5GB 4G LTE data after which it is throttled. Unlimited talk and text.
T-Mobile Tuesday's is a nice perk where any subscribers get access to weekly deals and giveaways including 10 cents off/gallon at Shell every week, free taco bell entree, $2 off baskin robbins, etc.

I pre-pay $99 a year for cell service on a T-Mobile MVNO (SpeedTalk Mobile). That plan only gives me 1GB of 4G LTE data each month, I can buy more data if I need it, or move to a bigger plan.. but so far the 1GB has been fine.

I pay $359.88 ($29.99 for a month) for home Internet through Comcast/Xfinity. That rate will end after the first year and I'll have to either switch to a local DSL company (that's lower cost) or maybe Xfinity will be reasonable and give me the same rate to continue on with them.

I signed up to my TracFone plan 3-1/2 years ago. It's the "60-Minute 90-day Auto-Refill Plan". By buying an LG Sunset (L33L) Android phone from HSN I started with 1300 minutes, 1300 texts, and 1.3 Gbyte of data. It was about a hundred bucks including the phone. (I've since switched to an iPhone and all minutes and everything were carried over to the new phone).

With this plan I get 60 minutes of talk, 60 texts and 60 Mbyte of data every 90 days. But with the deal I got at that time, the incoming mins/texts/data automatically triples on every renewal, (or any additional minute purchase) so it's really 180 minutes, 180 texts, and 180 Mbyte of data on every 90 day renewal. And as long as I keep renewing I never lose anything by expiration, everything carries over. For some this may not be enough, for me it's more than enough. I never use up all my minutes/texts/data, and they carry over. (We're light users, we don't talk much).

Also I think I got a discount by signing up for auto-renewal, not sure how much that is now. I pay $19.65 every three months, my wife has the same plan and so she pays the same. This is the total cost including all taxes, etc.

I may be grandfathered in, not sure if you can still get this, I haven't checked.
