Do You Tip At Counter Service Restaurants?

"Those customer-facing, touch-screen payment systems in restaurants are confounding customers in the U.S. and beyond."

I feel like it's getting out of control. What is the consensus here?

The server still does it all. I tend to have a coupon number on my phone, a gift card with $7 left on it and my credit card.

At this point of transaction I am still waiting for the service I am paying for. Therefore I hit no tip and move on.

Occasionally if I have a bigger order I will add a buck or two as a tip, like if I get drinks and breakfast items for two people or something. But in general I don't tip and really resent the way it is done with both the cashier and other customers watching you do it. Imagine if the waiter at the restaurant and patrons at surrounding tables came over to watch you write in the tip after your standard meals. That's exactly what they are doing here!

I also worry that the cafes are using it as an excuse to depress base wages, which means my tips are really going to fund their business model and not improving the net earnings of the front-end employees I am intending to tip.

If it's a place where someone cleans up after me, I usually leave a buck or two.

If not, depends on my mood.

Do you tip the bartender for the beer?

Doesn't the person who brings your burger and fries to the counter deserve as much?

I usually do a custom tip of 10% on bill before tax..........the std 10% tips on the tax so I have to do custom. Once I input 20 instead of the
intended 2 and instead of asking me to approve,it accepted it right away which has made me leery of custom tips ever since.

The last time, I felt in a rush and the people were nice so I hit the standard 15% button. The person thanked me for the tip so I immediately
know it was too much

Why don’t we tip grocery store baggers? They’re also providing a service and are low paid.

Agreed. I tip zero at these places where I order, pay, and pick up my food from the counter, then bus my own table.

Admittedly I avoid eye contact with the cashier at the moment I select "no tip" on the POS tablet.

Absolutely not. There is really no reason for tipping in such places. If you want to reward your barista for doing a good job with your drink, drop some change in the tip jar. But asking for tips before any service is totally nonsensical. And I tip very generously under normal circumstances with table service.

What really annoys me is when “0%” isn’t an option on the screen, and you have to manually select “other” and input 0 as your tip.

That is by design, part of the guilt-based social engineering.

Equally annoying is when you get a dirty look for tipping 0% in such a scenario.

Or when you tip in such a situation despite your misgivings, and they expect it and don’t even say “thank you”.

While tipping before receiving the service in some ways is “nonsensical” it’s really the only efficient and realistic way in this scenario. I couldn’t imagine running the credit card again when picking up your order. And really, aren’t the orders fine (or fixed) in the majority of cases? It’s not such a big assumption to “pre-tip.” The issue isn’t timing, it’s the philosophy of tipping in these cases. Entering a zero tip seems acceptable. I support your choice. Anecdotally, it seems like the younger generations are more accepting of this new normal.

True, I think part of what people find disturbing about tipping before service is that it disabuses us of the notion that tipping is about rewarding good service. In reality, it’s mainly a price discrimination scheme that charges big spenders and the easily guilted more, and a pay structure that compensates attractive workers more.

Only at the deli where my niece works. (She's also my Goddaughter.) There is a tip jar. If I didn't put some cash into the jar, I'd get the evil eye.

50 cents in the tip jar for a $2.75 coffee. I don't cre whether I "have to" or "ought to." I can afford it, and this is a very expensive place to live for people who work for coffee shop wages. Every little bit helps.

I also tip at the bakery where I buy bread every week or two - a dollar in the tip jar for custom-sliced loaves of pumpernickel and corn rye.

I have to admit to being very arbitrary about this. If I really like the place (usually a non-chain restaurant) I'll even put a buck in the tip jar for carry out where they obviously don't deliver your food or bus your table. If there's an employee who buses the tables, I try to leave a buck for them. Other than that, I just put $0 on the iPad. My wife finds it incredibly annoying, but tips anyway.

I never thought about about the pre-tipping issue, where the entire staff, from the people who prepare your food to the ones that deliver it to your table (if they do) knows how much you tip. I might just not patronize such a place.

I scooped ice cream, bagged groceries, loaded 80lbs. bags of concrete (hundreds of them a day) into trucks, loaded UPS trucks and various other low pay service-related jobs while in high school/college and have never received a single tip in my entire life. I'm 38, it's not like I did those things half a century ago. It's crazy how this tipping culture has evolved in the past decade or so.

Shouldn't businesses pay their workers more to minimize this sort of tipping? How do they pull this off in Europe and Asia?

what I hate is when I'm at a restaurant and at the bottom of the bill they will show the dollar amount for 15-18 or 20% of a tip which is fine, unless they're including tipping on the total; including tax. That is wrong and should only be pre-taxed amount.

Occasionally we go to typical fast casual restaurants where you move past 3 or 4 people who stare blankly into space and throw random scoops of food into your bowl followed by a cashier who punches buttons which may or may not have anything to do with your order. No way am I going to tip for that kind of service.

About a month ago we went to a non-chain Asian grill where we were waited on by a single server. She actually listened to what we asked for and gave it to us, insisted on cooking a new batch of noodles for my wife because the ones in the tray were too old, and packaged everything up carefully. I put $5 in the tip jar but now I wish that I had handed it to her.

Isn't the real question what jobs in the service economy should we tip, and which ones we should not. My answer is that if I tipped every person involved in those industries, I would not have enough money for my family. Why not tip cashiers, they don't get paid much. What about workers who stock the shelves at stores? A thankless job. A bigger concern,IMHO, is that some or many of these jobs are being or going to be automated - what is this portion of the workforce going to do? Many of these types of jobs do not require complicated skill sets although certain ones do require reasonable intrapersonal skills. The answer to this problem always seems to be retraining, but I really question whether a reasonable percentage of people holding those jobs have the motivation and/or intellectual capacity to shift into this brave new world.

However, major shareholders will be rewarded and key executives will be nicely compensated. I hope they tip their service people well.

I figure the odds be fifty-fifty I just might have something to say. FZ

They do, it's the law. But there is no law against trying to fool the public just a wee bit.

If I go out for a restaurant meal, whether a fancy place or the local greasy spoon, I know as a fact that the waiter or waitress who serves me is receiving $3.63 an hour from the employer. No more, no less, because that is what law sets for tipped employees in our state.

Now, the hostess who guides me to my table, or the cashier who takes payment at the end of the meal, I know that they are getting at least $10.10 an hour. Because that is the legally mandated minimum wage in our state for "non-tipped" employees.

Putting out tip jars, salting them with bills instead of change, and placing in prominent place under customers' noses is an effort to create the illusion that these workers are dependent upon tips.
Next time you go into a McDonald's or Arby's, when they hand you your order, say "Oh, where is the tip jar? I'd like to leave a tip".

You will be told right quick "That is not allowed".

Right, and what would be the proper tip — 10%? :D Our grocery bill is usually $120 so I’ll just hand the girl $12 every time. I’m joking of course.

Doesn't the person who brings your burger and fries to the counter deserve as much?
Honestly, I don't feel someone either popping the cap off a beer or filling up a glass of beer from a tap deserves a tip in life. The problem is that it is socially expected to tip the bartender. So I tip the bartender because I find it hard to go against well established cultural norms.

Yes, the person who brings your burger to the counter is doing no more/no less work than the bartender. In fact, it is highly likely that financially the person bringing your burger probably needs the tip more relatively speaking. However, it is not a cultural norm to tip them, so I don't. There does seem to be the new trend to try to create a new cultural norm to tip the person at the cash register.

It's all pretty ridiculous.

I leave $1 (sometimes more) on my table for the poor fellow cleaning up after me.
