Going to switzerland in a month-any final advice?

Our itinerary has been set. Wife planned us at strausburg france, basel, w day trips to geneva and lucern, Interlaken w trips to all the amazing hiking/mountain areas-4 days, laussane, w trips to gruyere montreaux etc.

We will be doing the swiss travel pass. We did a cost analysis and it came out on top based on convenience ultimately. We are not renting a car

Any advice on the above? Cant change itinerary at this point. All hotels booked.

Any advice on food, saving money eating out, absolute must see things in the towns/cities above? Favorite things you guys did when you went there?

The Alsace-Moselle Memorial is a little west of Strasbourg and one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. You can reach it by a short train ride.

You’ll step through each tortured era of Alsace’s turbulent history. The evacuation of hundreds of thousands after Germany invaded Poland. The Germinification of Strasbourg after it fell to the Nazis. The failure of the Maginot.

If you do only one thing in Alsace, make it this.

I lived in Strasbourg for a time. My other suggestion is cycling part of the Alsace Wine Route.

Are you into chocolate? Perhaps a side trip to Nestle chocolate factory?

Why are you doing a day trip to Geneva from Basel when you will be in Laussane? Also read the reviews of the Gruyere tour on TripAdvisor and decide if you really want to go. We decided against taking the Chocolate Train after reading that you don't see any real cheese or chocolate making, just showrooms and a talking cow.

Since you will have the travel pass, try to make time for a lake steamship or two, especially if you can use them to get somewhere.

OP: Better yet, please share complete itinerary :-)

I'll assume you mean the Lauterbrunnen valley and Jungfrau when you say hiking around Interlaken.

Buy a wedge of local cheese, some dried meat, fresh bread and a bottle of wine at a local shop or supermarket. Throw them in a backpack and find one of the hundreds of benches along any hiking route. Enjoy your (relatively) inexpensive lunch with scenery that is unparalleled.

Though it's not cheap, having lunch at a mountain restaurant is an amazing experience as well. If you do, sit outside and order the Rösti.

Unless you're looking for a great workout, I recommend taking the train or cable car to the top and hiking down.

Sounds like your Geneva time will be limited, but I enjoyed the Red Cross Museum there.

we bought fresh bread and cheese for our lunches every day..love the freedom of being able to eat from your backpack..and the cheese is great. IMO, too many fuss about where to eat and waste a lot of their time.

Wasn't there a long thread on Switzerland vacations a few months ago? If I recall correctly, it answers all your questions.

Looks like the closest one to your destinations is the Maison-Callier factory between Fribourg and Montreux, in Broc. See above link.
