Insane to buy a sports car?

Post by misterg » Fri Aug 02, 2019 12:04 pm

Since I was a kid, I’ve always dreamed of having a sports car. I want to do it in my lifetime. How much longer do I need to wait? Or, can I pull the trigger now? I want a convertible, something FAST and preferably stick shift (dying breed). The new Vette doesn’t have a manual option but it wins in terms of speed/value.

Front runners for cars:
2020 Corvette Stingray (~$80k)
2020 Porsche Boxster Spyder (~98k)

Age: 32
Status: Single, no kids
Income: ~$250k/year pre tax, maxing out 401k, backdoor Roth, and ESPP at work.
Living: Rent 3k/month (HCOL area)
Debt: None
Life insurance: personal $100k (20k cash value) policy plus employer 2X salary benefit
Savings: 750k (80/20 stocks/bonds)

It’s not allowable to post about a potential sports car purchase without posting which car it is you are looking at. This gives the other forum members the opportunity to either 1) live vicariously through you or 2) recommend a different car, typically the one they drive. :D

Some key questions - married? Kids? If you are single or married with no kids planned, you can probably afford now if it’s a priority. Otherwise, may want to wait until you are farther along in life and have some spare cash.

I don't see a point in being an overweight old man with a sports car that only comes out on the perfect weekend day. So now's the time. Take care of it and make the feeling last. The only thing is I would prioritize maxing all tax advantaged accounts. If you can do that, go get the car.

You're going to spend more than you think on tires, FYI.

As long as its a used Prius or older model Corolla, the members of this group will be fine with it.. Go wild! Your budget is as much as $2000.

Some purists will say you are crazy to spend that on a nonessential. I say buy it!

But, there is still a Bogleheads way to buy a car like that. Recognize that many sports cars can be bought, enjoyed for a long time, and you lose little to no money on the resale. Or maybe you lose $20K. But unlikely to lose 85k, which is what you likely will lose on a daily driver.

So, buy right! Buy a car that has been well maintained and low maintenance going forward. Buy a car that has taken the biggest chunk of depreciation. A 911, Cayman or Corvette fit that bill. A Ferrari or Lambo does not (outside price range and maintenance way too high) and anything like a Supra is going to depreciate like a rock. A 911 or Cayman S is the best for that.

I’m buying a C8 myself. Picking up a C7Z06 with low miles would also check all the boxes.

Not crazy, but I don't think you are rich enough to be not considered a douche by others for owning an $80k sports car.

Good job so far! Insane or not depending on your other goals for your finances.

Go in eyes wide open on expenses. Some $85,000 cars are going to cost you that much again in maintenance over another 10 years and others you may drive for 10 years with no issues and finally sell for $60,000. Either way you are spending money you don't "have to" but "want to." In the first case I don't think your income supports it. The second, well it is more than I would spend but I'm really happy with sports sedans at this stage of my life.

There are some really fun cars to be had for half that or twice that as well.

We have this monthly "cars and coffee" eventwhere I live and I'll just tell ya - there are more vettes and porshes there than you can shake a stick at. So if you want to be unique, maybe consider some different choices too. With 80K, I'd consider Audi TTRS. (I have a hot hatch - VW GTI Autobahn with Stage 2+ Unitronic - But I don't have your income level either so I have to be more modest)

Do you have safe parking for it in your rental? That would be my concern. Parking a brand new sports car on the street or in a group parking garage might not be ideal.

How would anyone know I wasn’t “rich enough” to own an $80k car? I’m not buying a car to please others anyway.

I think I’ve come to peace with the fact that no one will appreciate the car as much as I will— and that haters will always hate.

I did both. A "reasonably priced" sports car in my 20's and now all the rest. :)

I have always driven them to work. You can't afford the car if you can't afford to use it.
All that said I would probably be retired by now if I had not spent so much on cars and boats. I feel the cars are a decent trade-off for me but no boat since my first has been used enough to justify having them.

Why buy one brand new and have a massive depreciation?

If you want fast, classic, and manual you could get a 996 Turbo for $30-$40K.

Consider test driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance. You will be pleasantly surprised. It's within your price range, even less actually.

It will smoke any other ICE sports car you are looking to buy (no pun intended).

If you are concerned about the tech going obsolete in a few years, just lease it. That's what I did.

It typically seems that Toyota, Tesla or a bicycle are all acceptable answers. Others will say you can't spend $80-100K unless that is how much your portfolio rises or falls in a day. :happy

Another factor is how fast do you really need. I always say, it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. If you just want to feel silly acceleration on your daily freeway entrance then go for it. If you want to enjoy some spirited mountain driving, especially with a stick shift, then 250-350hp with good torque will arguably be more fun than 500hp+.

Yes, it's insane to buy a sports car. Yes, you can afford it. And now is the time to get while you are single and don't have to answer to anyone or be responsible for anyone.

I got my sports car when I was single. It was a mistake to get it but it was a mistake I had to make. I told everyone I was getting it to enjoy it, but I was getting it as a status symbol. I just didn't realize it until after I bought it. I got it out of my system and when I was no longer single I got a Prius.

Well, you can definitely afford either selection.

They are very different types of cars. Have you driven high-hp vehicles before?

Both run staggered wheels, depending on how much you drive and how aggressive the compound you want to run, tires+fees could EASILY run into 10% of the total value of the car per annum.

you mentioned living in a building. Will this be your only vehicle? Will this car be run throughout the year?

Both cars have very large, very active, and surprisingly nice owner communities. I suspect cost brings a certain level of maturity. Exercise discipline with options (a bug-a-boo with Porsche). And resist all urges to wear branded clothing

I had a Nissan 240sx in my late 20’s before I married. It was not super expensive but I loved that car. After I got married and we had our first child, my love (the car) had to go. So my wife got a new sedan and I got her old Tercel. Man I was bummed.

DEFINITELY GO FOR IT and enjoy your life now.

I’m new here, and while I got great advice about not buying a vehicle I was interested in, I think some folks seem obsessed with the “image factor” and how you shouldn’t buy a car for the image.

As a car person, I couldn’t care less about my image and that’s not the reason I’d buy a performance vehicle. Heck, if someone told me I could drive their 911 Turbo for free once a week, but it was pink and covered in poop emojis, then catch me on the streets living my best life.

Driving a car can be exhilarating for some people, even if it is just a daily commute made that much better by a great car.

I don't like cars so I can't give you direct advice about that.

On the financial side of things I think common themes are that we sometimes do a poor job of estimating what will make us happy and what is "worth it" in that regard. So being able to change your mind at relatively low cost is advantageous. In this case that would mean purchasing a used vehicle that would hold its value much better than a new vehicle. Of course I also understand that it can take quite a bit of effort to find the "right" used vehicle and so consider whether such a search would be something you might actually enjoy or if it would just be an onerous task you'd hate.

Fundamentally you are buying something with no pragmatic utility. Which is absolutely fine. Sounds like you've got plenty of income to do that and we should all do things that bring us joy even if sometimes that is expensive. So it is really down to what will make you the happiest. Used makes it easier to back out with less regret - one aspect of happiness. New is just much easier to acquire which depending on your life situation might be a more important aspect of happiness.

Enjoy whatever it is you get!

If you've got the cash to pay for it and you accept that it will depreciate in value pretty rapidly, go for it. :beer

An earlier poster mentioned Mazda Miata as a more affordable choice.

I drove my Miata day in and day out to work and everywhere for 12 years (unless there was snow on the road !), logging about 185K miles, and I still regret selling it a few years ago :(

At least give it a test drive, you might be very surprised and quite pleased with the acceleration and the very well-balanced handling. I felt like i could take on any corner at virtually any speed... it stuck to the road like Velcro... but please do drive carefully, regardless of what you decide to purchase.

Do it at your age. When you get older you may not be able to get in and out. When younger I had a 911 and a Fiat 124 Spyder. I loved them both but the Fiat was in the shop more than on the road. 911 was trouble free. I would go with Boxter. You could also go Miata and get the fun and reliability at a fraction of the cost. Good luck and I know you will enjoy a sports car.

Do it! It looks to me as if you can afford those options.

I have driven sports cars off and on for 40+ years--and muscle cars prior to that. I would seek more bang for my buck than the options you have listed, but that's just me. Don't try to save a few bucks while taking the risk of getting something you don't really want. Get something that will definitely scratch the itch if you can afford to do so. Don't make the mistake of considering the purchase to be an investment--it will be a drain, but a fun drain!

If you had this income for more than 2 full years, go ahead and buy either one. It looks like you earn enough in one year the cost of the car.

I also would suggest to cancel your WHOLE LIFE insurance and buy term life and put that savings towards the car loan and you might not even notice the difference in your budget.

Income: ~$250k/year pre tax, maxing out 401k, backdoor Roth, and ESPP at work.
Life insurance: personal $100k (20k cash value) policy plus employer 2X salary benefit
I

I also would suggest to cancel your WHOLE LIFE insurance and buy term life and put that savings towards the car loan and you might not even notice the difference in your budget.
+1

Drop the whole life. Don't even need term yet, with no dependents

Buy the sports car, life is short and meant to be enjoyed

I second the suggestion for a Model 3 Performance. It will smoke the other cars like a cheap bowl. Plus chicks dig it.

Yes, buy one now, your financial picture looks strong.
I bought a 2009 SL 550 in 2010 with 4000 miles and strongly recommend this approach. I have had the usual maintenance repairs but nothing
out of the ordinary. It is my every day car - though the airport and golf course are my main destinations.
I saved about 25% off the MSRP of a new one.
I am looking for a 'new' sports car and I really prefer hard top convertibles.
2017-2019 SL 550
2017-2019 M4 Convertible
My wife wants me to wait for the C8 (I had a 78 Anniversary Corvette in my younger days when we first met) and I may do that.
I still smile every day I get into the car.

Given your financial and life statuses, you should buy a sports car yesterday.

I think I’ve come to peace with the fact that no one will appreciate the car as much as I will
Not true my friend. A lot of us are right there with you. Post photos when you take the plunge. Good luck.

Others will say you can't spend $80-100K unless that is how much your portfolio rises or falls in a day. :happy
I hadn't heard that said before, but its not a terrible rule of thumb, to be honest.

You don't need to spend $80k to get what you want.

You can get a darn nice stick, convertible, powerful car for $20k-$30k.

Start used. See how it goes.

Speed and power in a school zone. Driving 30 behind a Prius. In stop and go traffic with all the other cars.

When do insurance rates start dropping for young male drivers these days? I'd get a quote for various models you are considering. Also think about the impact of getting points for speeding in your FAST sports car.

You're 32, have $750k and no debt? I would get that new Corvette. It is pulling at me as well. And it looks like it might be available at $60k.

They are very different types of cars. Have you driven high-hp vehicles before?

you mentioned living in a building. Will this be your only vehicle? Will this car be run throughout the year?
Yes I’ve rented a viper, challenger, newer Miata, boxster, etc.

It will be my only vehicle (girlfriend has one though). And I live in a warm weather state! Year round use.

K20 turbo swapped Lotus Elise. Look around at the many that have already been built.

Eat Teslas in Ludicrous mode in the straights....
Eat C8 Corvettes in the corners....

But you'd have to be small enough to fit. I'm 5' 9" and 185 pounds and easily fit.

$50k will easily buy one that's well sorted or build one from any Elise for under $40k.

With your income, just buy what you want. C7 is well in your budget. 911 GT-3 is well within your budget. Get a manual, not a flappy paddle, fat American couch cruiser.

Not crazy, but I don't think you are rich enough to be not considered a douche by others for owning an $80k sports car.
How would anyone know I wasn’t “rich enough” to own an $80k car? I’m not buying a car to please others anyway.

I think I’ve come to peace with the fact that no one will appreciate the car as much as I will— and that haters will always hate.
I'm sure some people where you work know exactly how much you make. People are often judgmental about conspicuous consumption items.
