Who cuts your hair? And for how much?

Post by Mr. Digweed » Tue Jul 09, 2019 7:58 pm

Sitting in the barber's chair, a young barber (by almost 35 years) is cutting my hair. I enjoy the conversation and there is much to learn by listening and engaging in thoughtful conversation . More importantly I realize the difficulty each of us grapples with. I gave what I though was a generous tip. Who cuts you hair, do you provide a generous tip? Are Bogleheads totally frugal, penny-pinching?

I may have paid someone to cut my hair 5 times in the last 20 years. I normally just buzz off my hair with electric clippers every few weeks. I'm on my 2nd $25 clippers in that 20 year stretch.

About every 3 weeks I walk across the street from my office to a barber I've known for years.
He always charges $12, and I always give him $20 & tell him to keep the change.

All my brothers-in-law cut their own hair, so I was shamed into cutting my own hair since last Thanksgiving. Cost: $0. And nobody has noticed the difference yet. But I do learn a lot by talking and listening to myself.

A local stylist. She charges $35. I generally give her a c-note cause I had to work stupid hard when I was young. I also give my house keeper a two month bonus at the end of the year. Working hard is hard. When you have done alright, you share when you can.

I did a preemptive strike several years ago when the hair started thinning up top and just did a buzz cut. I have my own clippers, removed haircuts item from my monthly budget and never looked back. I do enjoy taking my son to get his hair cut.

About $.62 per hair cut.

Wife does it

$14.99 trimmer about 4 years ago.

Only gets cheaper with each cut :)

I also enjoy conversation, but not when I have to pay for it!

I go about once every couple of months to someone in an old-fashioned barber shop. He charges $15 and I give him $20. He likes to talk.

Years ago, when I was new in town someone recommended one of those hair styling places. I was very uncomfortable there - they washed my hair, which I thought was unnecessary, and the lady barber decided to change my hairstyle when she combed it out. Luckily I could undo what she did, but that was the last time I went there.

I regular a local barber shop that is privately owned. I make an appointment with the same barber.

It's $23 for the cut and I leave a $10 tip.

It struck me one day sitting in the barber chair... my barber in his 30's was excited about an upcoming flight. It will be his first time ever flying! Him and his long time girlfriend had put together enough for a trip to meet her parents for the first time, and he's never really vacationed or traveled.

I'm fortunate and blessed, the barber shop provides a good service and experience every time I visit.

I guess this will be an atypical response ... I pay $60 per cut roughly once a month + $10-$15 tip.

I love my hair stylist who is the owner of a successful men’s salon. Great haircut with attention to detail plus extras like arm/hand massage, steamed towel during shampoo, etc. and a lively conversationalist.

Kind of a haircut + relaxation thing. I recently went to a Great Clips equivalent since she is on maternity leave and man was the difference night and day. It works nicely in my budget so who cares, right?

I do not tip.

$24 (senior rate) plus $6 tip at my local Sports Clip. I love the 5 minute head massage and hot towels on the face. And I check the wait time and get in queue online.

Local barber I've gone to for 35 years. $ 15, I give him a $ 20. He is retiring at the end of this year, after that I may just shave my head, not much hair left on top.

Like others, bought a 20$ buzz cutter with maybe 7 length guides quite a few years back while in college with the thought that if it only worked once it still paid for itself. It was always a spur of the moment bad hair day that cued the need for a haircut so the convenience was key! Gradually figured out what worked well for me over the years and saved a ton of time and money in the process.

For the record I pay $45 + $9 tip at the local men’s stylist. Fancy. I know I know. My hair kept getting hacked to death at the cheaper places.

Granddad was a barber; I feel comfortable in a real barber shop. I found an old fashioned barber shop near me that does a good job. $17, I think, but I add a $5 tip. I want this guy to stay around as long as possible. Greatclips and Superclips do a good job, but I resent the intrusive personal questions for a cash transaction.

On my 2nd pair of clippers in ~25yrs. ~$50 for 1/4 century of haircuts. I also cut my son's hair, the wife and daughter usually go to the local beauty school. I had to work "stupid hard" when I was young and still do, I have a difficult time paying others to do things I can easily do myself.

My grandfather was a barber as well and my dad cuts my hair now. Thinking about it, I don't think there has ever been a time when a family member hasn't been the one to 'lower my ears'.

They raised the minimum wage in my state, as a result all the haircut places raised prices. I use to go to a place run by a bunch of Albanians, it was $5 for a basic cut (no fades), so with a tip $8. However they raised the price to $8, so with tip figure $11-12. I started timing them on how long it took to cut my hair (since I get it cut frequently) and noted it took them about 7 minutes, including trimming eyebrows and shaving the neck with a straight razor. Since I am trying to live on a budget I decided, due to the price increase, to cut my own hair. I invested close to $60 in a very fancy Wahl hair cutting kit (I realize now I could have used a much cheaper set(around $24) as I only use 5 of the guides). So, I have been cutting my own hair 2x a week since February. It takes me about 5-7 minutes a cut, including set-up and clean up time. And frankly I get a lot of compliments on my hair. It really looks good. I wish I would have done this decades ago as I use to pay a lot more for cuts before I found the Albanians. I love the control it gives me over my own schedule, I no longer have to subject myself to whatever cold, flu, measles or whatever the other people in the barber shop are carrying and at this point I have almost recaptured my investment. Moreover there is that feeling of self-satisfaction and my hair has a consistent, neat look. At this point, there is no way I would go back to having anyone cut my hair.

The same guy has been cutting my hair for 40 years. There was a local hair salon near the apartment we lived at years ago and both my husband and I ended up going there and getting our hair cut by the same fellow.

I pay $27 + $5 tip.

Last time it was $18. I give her a $5 tip. In the salon at JC Penney. That's just a cut, no wash or blow dry. Maybe $5 more for the wash, which we do sometime.

I was getting a beard trim and buzz cut every 3 weeks. $34, including tip. As the hairline continued to recede, I decided last year to trim my own beard and just shave my head. Bald is beautiful (and cheap to maintain, too.)

Friendly conversation isn't what I'm talking about. They want first and last name, phone number and styling information to enter into their system. If that information isn't consolidated at the corporate level yet, it probably will be at some point. You're being tracked.

Cost Cutters, $16.95 plus $5 tip. They take my Fidelity VISA with 2% cash back. My former barber didn't take credit cards. Just became too difficult. I get a great cut for the same total price, plus 2% cash back.
