No more print Mad magazine
No more print Mad magazine
After 67 years the beloved Mad magazine will disappear from the newsstands In October.
I loved it as a kid but haven’t read it in decades.

I'm surprised.
Thought it went out of print 30 years ago.

DH and I are in our early 60's and still enjoy the occasional newstand copy. Admittedly we miss the old standbys like Mort Drucker, etc.

I thought that went away 20 years ago with Archie comics and that sort of stuff. I don't think I've ever seen or heard anything related to Mad since then.
Re: No more print Mad magazine
I loved Jack Davis's and Dave Berg's art.
Davis was the first comic artist whose art I recognized on sight as a kid, and in different situations (he did covers for Time, TV Guide, and countless print ads).
Berg did "The Lighter Side of..." installments, and that was probably the first thing I turned to when I got a Mad Magazine in the mid to late 1970s.

I bought a few of those in 80's. I guess my purchases didn't sustain them.
Re: No more print Mad magazine
That's sad. I subscribed back in the 60s. As I remember, the inside of the back cover always had an illustration, and by folding it properly, a completely different picture emerged. I never figured out how someone could draw that.

Re: No more print Mad magazine
I remember those (in reprints, for me?).
As a kid, I couldn't go to the movies nearly as much as I wanted to. The MAD parodies gave me some idea of what I was missing.
I still haven't seen "The French Connection", but I fondly remember MAD's "What's the Connection?" parody.
"Do you pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?"
"No, but I pick my nose in Harlem!"
To this day I have no idea what that means, but I thought it hilarious.
Re: No more print Mad magazine
Just the other day I referred to something involving two people always trying to outdo each other as being akin to the old Mad magazine Spy vs Spy.. I was greeted with a blank stare. Glad to see at least one other person is culturally aware enough to remember them.

I was a big fan of Spy vs. Spy. I remember buying a book or two with lots of those cartoon strips. At my dad's house I know there are several of the MAD Magazines from my childhood back in the 1970s. I kept them and would reread some of them when I got a little older and could understand more of the humor in the bits.
Does anyone remember "Basebrawl," a satirical piece about a new, more violent version of pro baseball? Or a piece about the growing trend of no-frills airlines?

I hadn't read it in ages, either. Millennial Pete Buttigieg's retort to President Trump was pretty telling, in recent retrospect: “I’ll be honest. I had to Google that.”

Operator, I'd like the number for Joe's Diner at 3 Main Street.
I'm sorry sir, I don't have any listing for Joe's Diner on Tremain street.
No, operator. I said Joe's Diner on Main Street.
I'm sorry sir, I don't have a Joe Steiner listed on Main street.
No, I said Joe's Diner! Dummy! Dummy!
I'm sorry sir. There's no Joe Steiner on Dummy Street either.

MAD seemed subversive to a ten year old in the 60's, but it was pretty tame stuff. I have fond memories but don't feel too much sadness about it's passing, especially since I wasn't aware it was still being published.
My fav was Don Martin. He was a truly strange cartoonist, and a quiet, nice family man in r/l.

Very good tribute, thanks. I read Mad in the 60s, my kids in the 80s and 90s.sometimesinvestor wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 11:30 am A tribute to the magazine

I remember I sent my brother, age 16 at the time, a copy to read while he was on an Outward Bound survival camp. When he came back I asked him about it. He said at the camp it seemed so shallow! One of my favorites was Spy vs. Spy, I think that will live forever, I’d like to hope so, anyway.

Yes, very good. I would like to add that there are many of us who still have that 13-year-old boy very close to our center. The loss of Mad Magazine hurts us, even if we haven't read it in years.Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:26 pmVery good tribute, thanks.sometimesinvestor wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 11:30 am A tribute to the magazine

I would always go and fold the back cover first and see the secret message!
God bless the 70s! Im typing this as my 35 year old wife and her 27 sister are drinking wine and discussing how they wish they could have grown up in the 70s.

The problem is that they didn't adapt. They needed to have something like mad.tv and content suitable for consumption on iOS and Android. Print is dead, regardless of type of information being published.

MAD Magazine's Spoof of the TV show "Ben Casey" which MAD called
"Ben Casehistory"
At the beginning of each show, the ancient Dr. Zorba (this was WAY before Planet of the Apes) would write on a chalk board (as if this were a vital lesson for young doctors to learn, or valuable information viewers of the show might need to know if they were to understand the TV show):
♂ Man
♀ Woman
* Birth
+ Death
∞ Infinity
But the MAD magazine added one more symbol:
$ Sponsor
----
And in another spoof of another medical show, Dr. Kildare (MAD's version was Dr. Killjoy):
"Never eat a hamburger in a hospital cafeteria."
Here is a link to someone's blog who has a nice screen shot of that one frame of the comic.
