DH and I are in our early 60's and still enjoy the occasional newstand copy. Admittedly we miss the old standbys like Mort Drucker, etc.

I thought that went away 20 years ago with Archie comics and that sort of stuff. I don't think I've ever seen or heard anything related to Mad since then.

I loved Jack Davis's and Dave Berg's art.

Davis was the first comic artist whose art I recognized on sight as a kid, and in different situations (he did covers for Time, TV Guide, and countless print ads).

Berg did "The Lighter Side of..." installments, and that was probably the first thing I turned to when I got a Mad Magazine in the mid to late 1970s.

That's sad. I subscribed back in the 60s. As I remember, the inside of the back cover always had an illustration, and by folding it properly, a completely different picture emerged. I never figured out how someone could draw that.

As a kid, I couldn't go to the movies nearly as much as I wanted to. The MAD parodies gave me some idea of what I was missing.

I still haven't seen "The French Connection", but I fondly remember MAD's "What's the Connection?" parody.

"No, but I pick my nose in Harlem!"

To this day I have no idea what that means, but I thought it hilarious.

Just the other day I referred to something involving two people always trying to outdo each other as being akin to the old Mad magazine Spy vs Spy.. I was greeted with a blank stare. Glad to see at least one other person is culturally aware enough to remember them.

I was a big fan of Spy vs. Spy. I remember buying a book or two with lots of those cartoon strips. At my dad's house I know there are several of the MAD Magazines from my childhood back in the 1970s. I kept them and would reread some of them when I got a little older and could understand more of the humor in the bits.

Does anyone remember "Basebrawl," a satirical piece about a new, more violent version of pro baseball? Or a piece about the growing trend of no-frills airlines?

MAD seemed subversive to a ten year old in the 60's, but it was pretty tame stuff. I have fond memories but don't feel too much sadness about it's passing, especially since I wasn't aware it was still being published.

My fav was Don Martin. He was a truly strange cartoonist, and a quiet, nice family man in r/l.

Very good tribute, thanks. I read Mad in the 60s, my kids in the 80s and 90s.
I remember I sent my brother, age 16 at the time, a copy to read while he was on an Outward Bound survival camp. When he came back I asked him about it. He said at the camp it seemed so shallow! One of my favorites was Spy vs. Spy, I think that will live forever, I’d like to hope so, anyway.

Yes, very good. I would like to add that there are many of us who still have that 13-year-old boy very close to our center. The loss of Mad Magazine hurts us, even if we haven't read it in years.

The problem is that they didn't adapt. They needed to have something like mad.tv and content suitable for consumption on iOS and Android. Print is dead, regardless of type of information being published.
