Passport photos cheap

Post by Swimmer » Tue Jun 11, 2019 6:46 am

We had passport photos taken at Walgreens’s. Cost for one person was just short of $20! Anyone know where to get a bargain?

Cell phone. Just make sure you follow the directions for how the picture should look.

DIY to save. Put white sheet over door for a backdrop. Turn on lights. Stand in front of sheet and have someone snap several shots with camera or phone. Print on good inkjet or upload to printing service (we use Sam’s Club). Follow these guidelines: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel ... hotos.html Keep snapping until you have pic that will meet these guidelines.

Take your own photo.
Have it printed at a local Walmart or Walgreens, etc.

Do you have a white wall/background? If so, that will suffice for taking pictures. And then print out at home.

Use the app passportphotobooth by TRB Ventures in App Store.
It gives you the parameters and take against light background.
Send to email and save as jpg.
Walgreens photo 4X6 gives 6 2X2.
With online coupon, print in 1 hour at Walgreens for 21 cents.
I did this 3 times in last month! :moneybag

Take your own picture, upload to epassportphoto.com for proper formatting, then print it at cvs/walgreens for $0.19 on a 4x6 sheet (it'll contain 4 photos). I've been doing it for years.

Costco FTW (as usual!) They were great with my kids also, it was pleasantly busy but she at least asked if I was satisfied with the photos.

If you have an AAA membership, I believe passport photos may be free. (Can't remember if it's a certain type of membership or all of them.) How about the post office? They used to do passport photos - maybe their online website quotes prices?

If you aren't into the DIY route, the USPS office charges $15. We get ours done at a mom and pop drugstore that charges $10. The also guarantee their work.

I made a 4x6 photoshop template with 2x2 gridlines. I paste the same photo six times and print out the 4x6 cheaply at my local pharmacy. Comes out to about $0.05 per shot.

have read (bad) stories of folks taking their own photo then 'sending in' a passport renewal only to get it back after an extended period of time as the pictures weren't to spec. On that note I personally wouldn't use a cell phone to take my own photo. I need to do this later this year.

I don't consider $20 to be excessive for a passport photo.

People who got their photo rejected have not followed the guidelines.
I've been DIYing for years for all members of my family with the help of epassportphoto.com, and I believe anyone who's smart enough to manage their family finance can follow the simple guidelines (white background, no shadow, etc) and do this easily. A cell phone worth $100 is good enough for taking the photo.

The average cell phone in any Americans’ pocket produces a better quality photo than any camera at a CVS, Walgreens, USPS, AAA, etc.

Have you tried epassportphoto.com? Free to use. Just take your own photo, size and get the correct dimensions on the website. Either print at home or send to an online print shop. Costco.com does photos and sends to you in the mail. Our family has used this many times and absolutely no rejections.

Costco is the best route if you have a membership. You can try all the samples and get a hot dog combo while you wait for them to get your pictures printed.

Those folks have gotten a lot more stringent at the passport office (or I am failing at photography  ) but after an unblemished record for two decades, I failed the last two times with the passport photos for myself and DW. Then had to get them at local AAA after paying an arm and a leg.

This, to me, is one of those penny wise & pound foolish topics. I can get a passport photo at Walgreens or CVS (with a coupon) for $10 and they guarantee it will fit the government requirements. I would rather pay the $10 and know I won't have problems trying to correct a photo error with a government bureaucracy and potentially delay receiving my passport than trying to save a couple of bucks. Don't get me wrong, I pinch pennies in other areas, but this isn't something I'm willing to gamble with.

From the Costco website:

"Plan ahead for your trip, whether traveling for vacation or business.

Your local Costco Photo Center can print four Passport photos while you shop for only $4.99*

*Available at most locations."

Had mine done at the FEDEX store for 6 bucks for two photos. Done in fifteen minutes and they knew what they are doing.

Walgreens is terrible for passport photos. We had our kids get pictures at the local Walgreens for their passports, and when we went to the appointment we found out that they had screwed up the pictures and they didn’t qualify so we had to go back and get them redone, but then we had missed our passport interview appointment and had to reschedule which meant more time off work and another trip to the city office to get it done. They didn’t charge us for the second ones but I think they should have refunded the whole charge for how inconvenient it was. If you advertise that you take passport photos you should do them correctly.

My wife and I had ours done at Costco a few weeks prior and the pics were cheaper (and correct).

Need Irish passport photos for renewal.
Live in NY.

Last time I went through Local drug store, photos were rejected twice. Not blaming drug store as they attempted to meet different Irish guidelines.

Any ideas? On where to go!

I agree with you. I took photos at home using my DSLR and one set of photos was rejected due to a slight shadow. I learned from that experience and reshot for the next two family members.

I suppose things have changed since my last renewal. The passport office at our main post office took mine.

Maybe I was just lucky. Free is good.

I’ve done it myself, and I’ve gone to Costco. Doing it myself was cheaper, and the photos came out better, because I have professional lighting and Photoshop. But doing it myself was time consuming and not worth the trouble when Costco can do it for $4.99 while I’m eating hot dogs.

This thread reminds me of when I was a child where my dad would drive across town to save 5 cents per gallon on gas and I would wonder why someone would spend so much time and energy on something that, at the end of the day, does not move the needle whatsoever.

Don't recommend AAA for passport photos. Photos were rejected not once, but twice - paying about $6 the first time, free for the second try. Paid $15 per person at Post Office and were approved.

Did they offer a reason why your photos were rejected? I'm due to renew my passport next year and planned to take my own photo, as I did the last time I renewed. I also took my DH's photo when he renewed his passport about 5 years ago. I used the same setup both times: white background, two lights (to eliminate shadows), DSLR camera, and followed the sizing instructions very carefully. I prefer to take my own because I can take as many photos as I need to until I'm happy with them.

Either way, any issues that were there in the latest few photos was definitely around in previous photos as well

Like I just responded ... yes and no. They sent me the standard letter that points out what's needed for the photo, nothing about what was wrong with the ones I sent.

And I tried to improve upon DW's set (we applied for her passport renewal a few months after mine), but no dice. Same form letter came back once more.

[Edited to add]: They probably didn't like the fact that I had a slightly off white background on our wall (but that was the same last time as well) and there might have been a light shadow (which was there last - successful - time as well). And I used epassportphoto every time to ensure that we were within the sizing norms.

an_asker's experience certainly shows the variability in the process. I used an app, our wall is slightly off-white, I am nervous I might have had a shadow too.
3 straight successful applications with no rejection. Go figure.
Some posters on this thread also got rejected from a more "professional" photo.

DW and I will be getting passports this summer. I notice the Post Office can do the photos - anyone know the cost for that? Certainly is convenient.

Are there any photo "quality" issues to be aware of or concerned about?

They have definitely tightened the requirements in the 10 years since we got our last passport. They now want pictures that work with their facial recognition software, which didn’t exist 10 years ago. Shadows, smiles, glasses, etc, will throw off the software. I’m not surprised that something that worked “last time” would get rejected now.

The photo was rejected at the post office where we applied for the passport in person. (Converting from youth to adult passport.) I think the background also wasn't quite white enough.

I cannot recall the details beyond that, but using the feedback, I reshot the photo for the next child, and it was accepted. Sorry I cannot provide more info.

I did mine at CVS a few months ago. I paid $16 I think.

Indeed, I was overcharged, but it was done quick, done once, done right.

$16 for a "once-every-ten-years expense". I'm okay with that.

The downside is that I didn't get a hot dog combo.
