Any Mint Mobile customers here?

Post by tommy85 » Tue Jun 04, 2019 9:42 am

Hi all,

I know there are threads here discussing low cost cell phone providers and MVNOs in general but i wanted to know if there are many Mint mobile users and if so what has there experience been so far particularly dealing with the customer service. I am debating switching since i am having issue(shows a different number to people when i call them) with Google Fi and their customer service has not been able to fix it over last 6 months.

Thanks
Tommy

I searched the site and found this thread from last October that addresses your question.

I have mint for years, along with my wife. Since it is basically T-Mobile, I almost never had to contact customer service. If my memory is not incorrect, I contacted them once for a voice mail issue, and they fixed it very quickly (probably in a couple of hours). I would imagine all technical issues is still fixed by T-Mobile since they are running the service.

I switched to Mint Mobile recently after the Sprint free year ran out. I have had no problems so far. I never needed to contact their customer service.

Are your issues coverage related?

Sprint and T-Mobile (Google FI, Mint, Ting, all of the lowest of the low cost MVNO) will not have a good of coverage outside of major metro areas.

T-Mobile has a new 600mhz band that only the latest phones (not even iPhone X) can access. This makes their coverage chart look fantastic. My iPhone 8 can't get "that" coverage. It is a jungle out there.

Even if they are "improving" and adding coverage. You get off the interstate or out of town and those 2 just don't have the coverage. Especially in "fly over states".

Stick with AT&T or Verizon, but know your areas where you need coverage beyond anything.

If you will consider Mint, then you should consider RedPocket. You pick your color (Red = Verizon, Blue = AT&T, etc).

Cricket (AT&T) and Total Wireless (Verizon) are two other good options. Not the lowest cost for a single line, but great for 2,3,4,5 phone plans.

We have Mint for one of our phones. No issues, but I haven't had to ever contact customer service.

We went with them because (a)we are in a major metro, so service gaps with T-mobile's network aren't a factor, and (b)they are the only MVNO on t-mobile's network that supports tethering. The cheapest plan on AT&T's network that supported tethering was 3x the cost for the same amount of data (though I don't remember that company name).

wife and i have Mint. No issues, except the voice over Wifi doesn't work very well, at least not on our phones. In fact, one morning my wife couldn't get a hold of me...she spent the night at her dads, she knew I was out doing field work on our tractor but was worried I got crushed (rollover)...but she couldn't get a hold of me so she drove all the way back to the house...she was relieved I was fine...after that I turned off voice over wifi for good.

Tried Mint after Cricket raised their prices but didn't like having 4 separate accounts for the family. Cheap but cumbersome.

Cricket later lowered their prices and thus I went back. Now on their $100 plan for 4 lines (everything included.) Unlimited data, talk, text.

I called customer service at Mint Mobile once just to get the account number and it was easy enough.

I switched from Cricket and have been happy with Mint Mobile. I wasn’t able to get a phone connection from the first floor of my home with Cricket (I’m in the Bay Area, not some place remote). Our phone actually works as a phone now.

The cost is less than half what we (wife and I) were paying Cricket. We have more data now as well. We prepaid 12 months and I referred my wife so each of us got a credit for the referral. We charged the expense of the plan on the Chase Business Ink Credit Card and then transferred the points to Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card and doing this essentially reduced the cost by another 7.5%.

Overall, I’m very happy to have switched. We’re getting more data and phones that now work for under half the cost.

We switched a family member from Tmobile to Mint Mobile. Same network and works fine, less expensive. We prepaid 1 year at $20 monthly for the 8GB LTE data option.

I have Mint. The cost of Mint is low. OP could try it out for 3 months and see what he thinks.
I have not had to call customer service so cannot answer to that question.

I have Mint. As does my wife, brother, and parents. All on the ~$15 / month lowest tier, which is fine with good wireless coverage in many locations. Pay by the year for that price. Big thumbs up.

I have it (for around 18 months), my two brothers have it, my father has it. No major issues. Is it exactly the same as having T-mobile? Probably in most situations. If roaming a lot or in high congestion areas that is where you might notice a difference/have problems.

Anecdotally, my father spends about 6 weeks skiing in CO in the winter. He says coverage with Mint is spotty there when out of Denver compared to when he had a major carrier.

My wife and I have used Mint for 18 months or so. Only had one issue that required a call to customer service - for some reason they deactivated my wife's line out of the blue. Everything was resolved with one call so no complaints from me!

Me and my wife have it. It works decent enough and pretty much same coverage area as T-Mobile.

This is incorrect. OP I've had T-Mobile knockoffs for years including mint mobile for the last year and a half. Mint works great and it's cheap. The only issues I have with service are when I'm deep in the mountains or out of the country. T-Mobile/mint have great coverage and great customer service.

You probably won't have to. They usually send 2, one to try out and another to port in your number or share with a friend.

If you're not ready to commit to a year, they have a 3 month plan for $45, which works out the same per month. They've run better startup deals, but I haven't seen any recently/currently.

Right. Per MB of data, Google FI is quite expensive. Does using all 3 qualify it as "good" coverage if all 3 are less than stellar outside of major metro areas?

I meant it as "and most of the lowest cost providers.." They often use Sprint or T-Mobile to get the lowest prices. Google doesn't have to do that because people will buy it regardless for "international travel". It probably does help Google's bottom line. Not sure why they didn't use AT&T + Verizon + US Cellular as their coverage providers.

If I look at the T-Mobile coverage map it looks glorious. If you take off the 600mhz band and start to dig in, it isn't so great. Big holes not many miles from us. With everything, do your research, your mileage may vary based on your location and where you use your phone.

I've used Fi for international travel as it is a great deal for data. It is not cheap for domestic.

Where I live, T-mobile coverage is better than AT&T IMO. I had Cricket and had more issues than with Mint. Obviously, everyone lives in different places. Most people don't travel that much, especially to rural areas. I haven't had a major carrier for at least 10 years. I've tried Mint, Fi, Cricket, Freedom Pop and Straight Talk. Mint has had the least problems for me.

I think all the major 4 carriers, if you are not in rural areas, have pretty good coverage.

Former Verizon customer, former Cricket customer, now Mint Mobile.

At $20/month it's a great deal. The data speeds are way better on Mint than Cricket (Cricket caps theirs at 8mbps while with Mint I can get 75mbps). My wife works in an older school and could never get signal using Verizon or Cricket (AT&T). Amazingly with T-mobile she can get signal so she's a happy camper (and I'm a happy camper that I saved $15/month switching from Cricket).

I try to get her parents to switch but they want to stay on their Verizon plan at $180/month(!) because they get a "free" phone every two years (not even sure that's true anymore, I think it's simply them paying it off as part of their plan). I try to explain to them that after 5 months of $140 savings, they could buy a new phone and then they'd have $140/month in their pocket the remaining 19 months. But they refuse to believe/understand. So I don't push it much.

I switched from mint mobile to sprint because I was using 15-16GB data a month. When you reach their data limit they slow you down to a completely unbearable speed. Sprint had a kickstarter 25 unlimited lte plan so I immediately switched.

I'd be quite surprised if there were no taxes or fees on the Xfinity mobile plan. You need to compare apples to apples. Then there's the whole thing of not using much data. And being tied to Comcast internet (cancel/switch internet, no more Xfinity mobile).

I was comparing Xfinity to the comment regarding Mint. As I understand it, Mint is $15/mo plus taxes & fees. Correct? Xfinity is free (unlimited voice & text, very limited data), not including taxes & fees.

If you include taxes & fees, my 2 lines jumps to $5.75/mo to cover taxes & fees. Also, if you cancel internet, I thimk thay tack on $10/mo but the service continues. But I'm not going to cancel internet, since it's the best deal for me by far for the service and cost.

I have the 8GB Mint plan which costs $240 for a year and it was $250 out the door. So, It includes most taxes/fees. When I had Google Fi the taxes/fees were $10/mo and that was using no data. Obviously they vary by state/city. Xfinity is not a good option for me as do use data and I don't want to be pinching bytes on my phone.

Can you share with us your carrier’s name?
Xfinity mobile, on the Verizon network. Many threads here on this service.

Xfinity is not a good option for me as I don't want to count used bytes on my phone.
$250 for a 8GB plan maybe good for you, but certainly would not work for us. I use little or no data, so your plan would cost me $200+/yr more for a single line. My plan equates to $35/yr per line, including tax & fees and minimal data. Considering some increased international calls & text and data usage, our lines actually have averaged around $39/mo each. If I wanted 8GB data, I'd be on a different plan.
