Epson Perfection v750, v800 or v850 Scanner?

Post by Caduceus » Wed May 22, 2019 4:52 pm

I am thinking of scanning the remainder of my genealogical collection of photos. Does anyone who own any of the above scanners have any recommendations about which to get?

The v850 is expensive at $1,000, and I can get the v750 (used) at about $500.

I am concerned about potential scratches to the glass showing up on my scan if I buy used instead of new. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

I was thinking the scanners have resale value, so I could buy the v850 at $1,000, and then try to sell it at $700, so my net cost might only be a few hundred dollars after shipping.

Consider the CZUR ET 16 or 18 document scanner. Very versatile, and a little lower in price.

I don't have any of those particular models, but I do have the Epson Perfection V600, and I think it does a very, very good job.

You also might consider a scanner rental -- for example this one is $199 for a month. https://fujitsuscannerstore.com/rentsv600-aenbd/

What size are the majority of photos and how many are to be scanned?

+1 on the V600 scanner
I just set it up last week so don't have a lot of experience, but so far so good. I got it to replace an HP ScanJet G4050 because while that model was great for photo prints and PDFs, I didn't like the quality of output for 35mm slides. The V600 has passed the 35mm slide test.

If you check out the Epson Perfection V600 on Amazon, then click on Reviews, the first review on the list provides a very detailed workflow from an image scanning professional.

This really varies, because I have some really old photos passed down to me over the years that are over 70 years old that are odd sizes, and then I have the more recent ones (many color photos are now faded, which is why I'd like to scan).

My estimate is that there are probably around 10,000 photos, but I do not intend to spend my entire life scanning, so I am focusing on only the really important ones.

I would say there are maybe around 1,000 photos that are really important, and if I could get those scanned, the project would be a success. Because this will be for archival purposes, I want to scan them at a quality and resolution that meets archival requirements, and I'd like a good scanner too.

The Epson FF-680w is a good, fast photo scanner especially when dealing with large quantities.

I bought the V600 for my father to scan his slides. He has been happy with it, so I'd imagine that you can't go wrong with a higher end Epson.
