Recent Stays in Riviera Maya Area of Mexico

Post by BillyV001 » Wed May 15, 2019 12:09 pm

Hey All,

planning a trip to one of the AI's in the Riviera Maya area (Cancun) and would like to know the extent of the sargassum (seaweed) problem there.

Anyone been there in the last month or so? Would really appreciate any input.

Best,
Bill

I went through this exact thing last night trying to plan a trip for the summer.

We've previously been to the Riviera Nayarit (Peurto Vallarta) and the beaches were great. Then we tried the Riviera Maya side (Cancun) and the sea weed was a real turn off.

Planning a trip again, tried to get some intel on how bad the situation is on the east coast of Mexico and it does look bad. Some webcams you can checkout yourself:

If you're dead set on the Caribbean side, then the leeward side of Cozumel is an option.

We ended up choosing the west coast !!

My wife and I stayed at an adults only all inclusive resort called Secrets The Vine in Cancun back in March. There was a lot of seaweed but the resort picked it up early in the morning. I thought the beach and water was great but I don't have much beach experience other than Jones Beach in NY and S Padre Island.

Might checkout getting a place on Akumal bay (in the town of Akumal). It was seaweed free the last time we were there. I think the shape of the bay prevents seaweed from floating in but I'm not positive.

Tried to lookup a webcam in Akumal and found one. Looks to be overrun with sea weed.

We were there a couple years ago. That stuff was all over the beach in Puerto Morelos (although the town was delightful). However, further down in Tulum it was absolutely pristine.

Stayed near Tulum this time last year and it was bad. In the DR they had a really neat tractor to scoop it up (in Tulum it was done the old fashion way with wheelbarrows).

Thank-you all for your input!

We've been specifically looking at the RIU palace Riviera Maya. I used this site to get to get an initial take to what the beach looks like near the RIU:
http://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/sea ... el-carmen/. There's a color coded map that grades the extent of the problem. The RIU beach is yellow which is the least severe. I then called the RIU (011-52-984 877 2280) to confirm. The woman answering said that yes it is an issue and she (of course) can't guarantee anything but that the beach is cleaned up every morning as needed.

We're in!

Wow! Last xmas, we had a trip scheduled to Playa but switched to Kauai at the last minute, due to seaweed. Very sad what is happening down there...

Was there all last week...Seaweed was a complaint by most ocean swimmers and the brown color extended out past the bouy line. Hotel was working full time to keep it clear, other properties on either side not so much. I wouldn't advise wearing any light colored bathing suits either. The photo above is close to what we saw in non tended areas.
We had plenty of pool options that we preferred to spend time at anyway, so not a big deal unless the ocean is your thing.

Went in December last year and it was bad. Big hotels do clean their beaches so it's less of a problem (we stayed in the city though).
We like to swim in the ocean and there was quite a bit of seaweed - not very pleasant .

Was there in April when sargassum had just arrived. Looked bad in Playa del Carmen, but not at all in Cozumel, as most of the beaches face West there. Alternatively, the cenotes are great and not to be missed, and I understand Isla Mujeres Playa Norte is not a bad option as well.
