Cost of summer camp

Post by Determined » Fri May 03, 2019 5:59 pm

What would consider a typical cost for a two week overnight summer camp?

The back story:
My young teen has been attending a ymca camp for several summers. I have not asked his dad to assist with anything in four years. He indicated that he is now in a position to help. He pays $200 a month child support and is under no obligation to help with anything else (that’s a different story). We sent our now young adult children to many camps and other activities when they were in school. Yet his dad was shocked to learn the cost for this camp was $1200. Yes, it is an optional activity that I choose to send him to and can afford.

That sounds about right. Overnight camps here in the upper midwest run from 500-700 a week (depending on the type of camp).

Forget to mention we are also in the Midwest/Great Lakes.

2 weeks is a long time. While the accommodations are likely not as nice (shared cabins), $86/night is a lot cheaper than even a budget all-inclusive resort, and this includes supervision of minors.

Seems about right.

My kids are too young for sleepaway camp but I was recently looking into it out of curiosity (upper Midwest as well) and your prices sound about right for YMCA and non-profit camps. The private, for-profit camps I looked into are at least double that.

Determined, Is the person who is questioning the price tag someone who has ANY experience with a non-subsidized sleep away camp fee currently? Or is his sticker shock based on what it cost 30 years ago?

Care.com reports that the average cost of sleep away camp is $768. per week.

Thanks for sharing the average cost. Our older children (21 and 23) attended various camps and went on school trips so these prices are not far off. Since he hasn’t contributed to anything for the children beyond his child support obligation in over four years, I don’t know what he expected.

One near here is $2200 for a week, $3500 for two weeks. Nice place on a lake.

My ex said he misread the invoice and thought it was $4000. The end.
