Do you get value out of Clear (airport screening)?

Post by Nearly A Moose » Wed Apr 24, 2019 9:38 am

Who has Clear (the expedited airport identity screening service), and do you find you get value out of it?

I can get it for $99 (Delta frequent flyer) and add wife for another $50. I already have TSA PreCheck. I fly once or twice a month on average, business and pleasure. I’d be paying this out of pocket.

Have folks found this useful, and if so, what airports? I mainly fly out of DCA and security usually isn’t bonkers. But sometimes ATL, LAX, etc are a pain. Wondering if it’s worth it for the handful of times a year it makes a meaningful difference. Curious as to others’ experience.
Pardon typos, I'm probably using my fat thumbs on a tiny phone.

Have been using Clear for 18 months now and to me, this service is too good to be true. I expect something to change soon.

I don't have it, but I have noticed that at Dulles, the Clear people go into the same security area as TSA Pre Check. There is sometimes a relatively short line for Pre Check, but usually none for Clear.

I use clear at La Guardia. I fly out of LGA about 20 times per year out of terminals C and D (delta).

Clear usually saves me 1-5 minutes vs standard pre-check because pre-check lines are short or non-existent on the days/times I fly. But the other day the pre-check line was long and it saved me 10-15 minutes, on a day I was otherwise in a hurry and had arrived a little later to the airport than I intended. On that day, clear paid for itself for the year in the form of a little less anxiety about missing a flight.

Yes. ATL is my home airport and even the PreCheck lines there are crazy. DH and I both travel frequently so it's worth ~$11/mo.

I don't have it. My local airport doesn't have it. I do have PreCheck via Global Entry.

It has always struck me as strange that one could pay a private company for expedited access (line jumping) to a government service (security screening). Wonder if I could set up a similar service for my local DMV office. (I suppose the same could be said for airline elite status or premium cabin priority security lanes, which I have utilized)

There are services that, for a fee, will handle your DMV tasks for you, including visits to field offices.

In my area (Southern California), the AAA offices can do most of what the DMV offices can do.

+1.

Additionally, since the TSA benefits financially from this arrangement, it decreases any incentive the TSA has to expedite processing for people who aren't paying for the service (and this would serve to drive more customers to the service, which further benefits the TSA).

I have it and love it. Once my travel decreases, I might let it lapse, but for now with approx. 10 flights per year I find it well worth the cost. I fly out of DEN to various locations and most places I fly to have it. If you ever fly out of SFO with Clear, you will be in for a treat. Clear began in SFO and they take it very seriously there to give you a great experience. You will almost feel like you are a celebrity or something as they escort you past the people, almost pushing people to the side. It always amuses me when I fly out of SFO.

Clear is horrible. A complete rip-off! Spread the word far and wide!*

Promos/Deals

Post by zeep » Wed Apr 24, 2019 3:39 pm

In the past I have seen various 1, 3, maybe even 6 month free trials or promos; Anyone know the best current promos or where to monitor for CLEAR deals?
Thx

Thanks, all. Due to getting to the airport a little early, I’m now a happy Clear member (sorry, eucalyptus). So far, saved about 10 minutes :)

It seems like a good service but since they don't serve my local airport and I travel a lot internationally where I am not going to benefit from it obviously, I haven't joined. I do really like TSA Pre via Global Entry. I'd probably get Clear if they did serve my local airport.

I've found that a Google search will typically identify current deals. If you work for a MegaCorp, your travel department may have some sort of deal. Also, IIRC, a current member can refer you for a free trial.

Maybe airports have adapted more but when I tried it at LAX 2 years ago I felt uncomfortable having a person with a badge simply walk me through the line cutting crowds of people and saying excuse me, then stopping me at the front of the line.

I’ve only seen clear at two airports that I frequent, PHX and LAS. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with it more often because I think it’s total BS.
