Women, How Much Do You Pay for Haircut

Post by drawpoker » Sun Apr 14, 2019 8:14 pm

After more than 3 years my regular stylist left Shop A and went to Shop B (much further, not walking distance for me :( )
I was used to paying $40 for haircut w/shampoo and blow dry, tipping her $7 or $8 depending on if she did the shampoo. As it happened, I was able to eyeball the price list at her new salon when I went in to pick up a friend who needed a ride. $47 for a haircut!

This new place has been in business for many more years than the other, but the funny thing is, the shop is so small, windowless, and in an older and not very grand bldg, it almost feels claustrophobic to me  So it strikes me their overhead should be lower than Shop A, can't use that as reason for the higher prices. Right now, am not at all inclined to "follow" this stylist to Shop B, think I will just stick with the old place and try my luck with someone new.

What do you pay for a haircut? Not on Fifth Ave. or Rodeo Dr  Just regular "middle America" salons.

My wife pays about $80 (which includes the tip) in the southeast, for the works of shampoo, rinse, cut, and dry. She only gets her hair done 2x per year though. She is happy with the price, and frequency. I am happy she does it.

Am probably going to regret asking this - but - when you include "rinse" here are you speaking of a color "rinse"?
If so, that would cause a steeper price.

Supercuts senior discount $15 plus $5 tip. Not all Supercuts are the same. One near me is quite good.

My hairdresser will shampoo, cut and style my hair for $13.00. I give her a $20.00 bill and let her keep the change. If I have to cover up the grey hairs, that is closer to $50 (also include shampoo, style, etc.).

Sorry, not skilled in the art of the talk. No, no color for that price. Every eon or so, she will do highlights, which she enjoys, and look great. Now we're in the $150 territory. But again, I encourage it, and actually wish she did it more, as she enjoys it.

This is one of those topics that really depend on the person. I pay a fortune for a cut and color every 7wks, about $140 with tip. It's a luxury but I'd be willing to sacrifice all kinds of other luxuries (my car, eating out) before I give up my stylist. I have really thick, not quite curly but not straight, totally unmanageable hair and she's worth every penny.

For shampoo, cut without a "blow out", I pay $24 and tip seven. I started doing the color myself. (Actually my SO and I do each other's.)

Every 4-6 wks we're $100 poorer. Color the "skunk stripe" and highlights.

For myself, I bought a Flowbee for $75. I haven't paid for a haircut in 25 years.

In a Philadelphia suburb, $60 for color + cut. I'll give a generous tip, including a few dollars for the shampoo person. Dryer is extra, which I always skip.

This is a small shop that I've been going to for more years than I care to remember. Any of the owner's staff does an excellent job. On rare occasions, an employee might leave. I'm comfortable switching to a different person.

Is the new place charging $47 just for a haircut without the shampoo or blowdry?

Or $47 for the same services you used to get for $40?

Yep, that's it. 17.5% increase.

And services to be given in dreary, cramped quarters.

I never pay a fortune for haircut, I figure my face can’t be made worse. $19 for cut and hair dyed. Previous I paid $35. So this is a bargain, plus it’s top notch product. I’m low maintenance when it comes to hair cut.

I cut my wife's hair with the scissors that came free with hair clippers I use.

Nothing. Hate going to a salon and find it easy to keep my shoulder-length hair cut by myself. Used to have very full head of hair, but also good arm strength and flexibility. Luckily, as both diminished, so did the amount of hair on my head, so in my mid-seventies, I’m still able to cut my own hair. I also cut my spouse’s hair for the 31 years of our retirement.

Wow, some of the prices here just sound crazy. And there I was feeling so guilty about my $10 haircuts I found someone to do it once every two months for $6.

I use the owner of my salon every 4-5 weeks for $45. After trying several other stylists who charged less, I returned to her because she always gives me a skillful cut (short thick hair with cowlicks). No hair color.
I still don't understand why women are charged about double what men are charged for a similar amount of time and expertise.

The real question is, what is a good haircut worth to you?
if you go somewhere else and you don't like how your haircut was done, was that worth the savings of an extra $7?
Remember you're not going for the ambiance, you are going for that person's skill set. I wouldn't care if they were working out a hole in the wall as long as the job was done right.

My wife goes to the local Beauty School. Wednesday's are "Senior Days," 20% off. The regular price for a cut is $12.00. On Wednesdays it is less than $10.00.

For my wife it's usually between $80 - 120, depending on where she goes. This is CT. Cut and color.

My wife, who regularly receives compliments on her hair and who styles, cuts and colors it herself, has never had a professional cut during our many years of marriage. On one hand, that represents what is a positive since she does such a good job, but on the other hand, she probably parlayed savings of several hundred dollars a year into a house that cost thousands more than one I would have chosen, showing her professional, negotiating skills. :happy

We men ($17 + tip) enjoy that our women look so good with great hair styling, though that costs ($200).

In NJ salon, $65 plus tip for cut and dry. I've tried a few different salons and they are all within $5 of each other (except great clips, supercuts, etc). I go every 8 weeks. When I want highlights, I'm looking at $175+ including tip, usually 2x a year. I cover my own grey every 5 weeks or so at home.

I recently found a stylist I had used in that past that will now cut at our home, and she charged me $90 for cut and full highlights. I tipped her generously and am sticking with her! And she gave me a better haircut than my most recent stylist.

Around $20 for a simple straight cut with no shampoo at any solon place by any stylist. I usually get it done once/yr.

I moved from a HCOL area where I paid $45 + $20 tip for a fantastic haircut every six months. That stylist was the best I'd ever found and I follower her to three different salons.

Here in a LCOL area, I tried the closest salon which charged $17 but the cut was bad. I fixed it to 'okay' in the mirror at home. I'll be looking for another place to try next time.

I’ve found that, within the same salon, prices go up slowly. It may be 3 years between price increases. So when was the last time you had a price hike?

If you like your stylist a lot, then put up with the price increase and the dreary setting.

If not, then switch.

Man, but with a traditionally-feminine haircut. I pay $8 at the local hair salon school for wash (including shampoo/conditioning), haircut, blow-drying, and flat-ironing.

I’ve paid as much as $60. Now I’m in the $30 range. However I’m at the point where I need coloring service so cut and color together are about $100.

I also cut my wife's hair. We bought scissors and clips and cut each others hair. My wife even got compliments on the express bus to work about her hair. She even likes the way it looks. So haircut is $0 after the $20 or so of equipment.

Maryland/DC suburb, $35 for shampoo, cut (simple, short, no-fuss) , and light blow-dry. Tip extra.

I don't have a set frequency, just until I can't stand the shagginess any longer.

Philly suburbs for a man: $15 + tip in an old fashioned barber shop where the loose hairs on the floor have probably been there since before the turn of the century.

Supercuts around here is about $20 before tax/tip as it's a very HCOL area.

The major expense for me is not cutting but dyeing the white roots. I'm only in my 30s but need to dye. I got my first white hair in my mid teens :annoyed That's about $80 every 6-8 weeks before tax/tip. I've tried dyeing my hair at home, and it was a messy disaster that resulted in fines for cleaning costs in my rental. So I suck it up and pay for it :annoyed

I'm in Seattle. I have been really reluctant to start down the path of the $120 haircut, but as I age and want to be taken more seriously in my professional life, I have also been coming up against the fact that my personal styling is a weak area.

I compromised by paying $85 + tip (i.e. $100) at a vintage hair salon to learn the basics of how to put up my hair in various kinds of 'dos. Right now I'm rocking a Gibson tuck. I'm slowly branching out into other types of updos. Eventually I may need to go back for another $100 lesson.

Seattle, $80 including tip, for the best haircuts I’ve gotten in my life at a fancy salon downtown. Worth every penny.

San Diego, $60 including tip. Not as good as the guy in Seattle, but much better than Supercuts or the like.

Wife pays $7 for the senior discount at the Paul Mitchell school. The haircuts are mostly fine, but it takes 2 hours for a simple haircut, between multiple consults with the teacher and the student treating each individual hair like it’s its own adventure.

Wife used to pay $3.50 at the community college, but after a scary moment where an unsupervised student was going to buzz all of her hair off, she reconsidered her position on haircuts, and pays a couple of dollars more at the Paul Mitchell school.

My wife pays anywhere between $120-$160, depending on specific stylist, once every 12 weeks. That includes cut, color highlights, color lowlights, layering, wash, style, and tip.

I'm in the Dallas area. I have a haircut and coloring every four months (including the usual shampooing, styling, etc.), and it costs $80-$100 each time, depending on whether I want extra stuff, such as deep conditioning.

While I'm perfectly happy with home-brewed coffee and free office coffee, My husband has a $4 cappuccino every day! Sometimes he buys a pastry. So we have a budget of $150 for coffee shops every month. That seems high to me, but that's important to him... so what can I say...

My ex is a hairstylist and charges $68 bucks for cut/shampoo/blow dry for a female. Haircut alone is $48 so close to what you found so maybe that is typical. Color is extra. She works for a "Salon" that is pretty fancy IMO but lives in a low to moderate COL city (urban area) in the South. Caveat: I am male and know nothing about hair.

I live in southern connecticut, and pay $60 for a cut and blow-dry, which I think is pretty standard by me. I get highlighting about aver 3-4 months, and that costs $120, but includes a cut/blowdry also.
