How Much Do You Pay For Haircut?

Post by capitalhockey » Tue Apr 09, 2019 12:56 pm

I go to a barber shop roughly every 3 to 4 weeks. Regular men's haircut cost $15 and I tip $2 for total of $17. No shampoo or shaving included. I have a pretty basic haircut and does not care much about fancy style. I have it cut short and neat. How much do you pay for your haircut?

I was thinking about going to a barber school nearby to get my haircut for $6 by a student trainee. Any one does this?

I bought a pair of trimmers in 2008 for ~$20 at Wal Mart. Haven't paid for a haircut since. It's easily the best investment I have ever made, paying for itself roughly 75X over. Sometimes my wife does it for me, sometimes I do it myself.

I pay the same as you. Every now and then I get coupons so I pay less then the usual $15 rate.

I pay $11 plus $4 tip. I get the “senior” rate.

If I had a barber school close by, I would use it. One week of new hair growth will take care of any mistakes made by a trainee.

Every 4 or 5 weeks. Haircut + Beard Trim. Usually runs about $40-$50, depending on which of the two shops I go to.

Heh, I love the places that charge men less than women. Maybe someday they'll learn to charge based on the haircut rather than on chromosomes. My hair is around 13 inches long. I go to a place that has about a 90-120 minute process. They first wash my hair over a sink, including shampoo and conditioning (if I could afford it, I'd go there ever day to have them wash my hair!), followed by the haircut proper (which is not basic, but includes layering, point-cutting, and so on), then blow-dry, then flat-iron. $8. If I feel they did a particularly good job, I'll tip a dollar or two. I usually go to the salon this every four or six months.

It's a salon school, so it's not done by a licensed stylist, but by someone who has somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 hours of practice. There was one time the cut was slightly askew, but I went back the next day when I noticed it and one of the licensed instructors fixed it for free.

Either $15+$4 tip or $25+$4 tip, depending on which store I go to (based on wait times).

My wife used to cut my hair for years with a clipper, and the clipper certainly paid for itself x 50, but since having two young kids, its just easier for me to go get it done.

I grew up in a small town in the south. I don't remember anyone tipping the barber back then. Maybe they did, and I just didn't know it, but typically I don't think it was customary to tip the barber. My barber retired, but I could go by his house and he would cut my hair and I did that for a long time. Before he retired, he charged $6 for a haircut. After he retired, he cut my hair for free. I tried to pay him, but he wouldn't let me. Now I have to drive several miles to another town to get a haircut. I now pay $12 for a haircut, no tip. I have never tipped a barber.

$19 cut + $11 tip.

I save by cutting my kids hair. 3 boys every month...60 min total to cut + 10 min clean up.

Pro tip: masking tape with a little vegetable oil for straight mohawk lines.

I like it. I don't tip barbers, or Uber drivers, or postal carriers at Christmas, either. I'm most amused by tip jars at self-serve coffee places.

Ahh yes, the oft maligned Flowbee. I have one and actually love it...it's one of those inventions that looks kind of ridiculous, but really works well. I use one plus a pair of clippers to neaten things up around the ears and back of the neck. Haven't paid for a haircut in about 10 years now.

$13 for a buzz cut at Supercuts, plus a $5 tip. I get a professional cut four or five times a year (when I have a special occasion coming up) and do some trimming on my own in between.

+1, for at least 15 years now. I am on my third set of clippers but have spent well under $100 total on them. It takes me about 20 minutes and if I paid for it I wouldn't really have them cut it any differently.

If you figure $15 and 2 hours of time (travel + waiting + cut) per haircut, I've saved over $2,500 and freed up more than 12 days of my life in the last 15 years by cutting it myself.

I am also in this camp - self-administered buzz cut. Now if I could get my wife on this program, the savings would be huge! No luck so far.

Wahl clipper with guards (one time purchase). For the past dozen years or so.

#2 all over (2-3 minutes), Right and Left angle clipper around each ear (1-2 minutes), #1 on side burns and lower/back (1 minute)

~5-6 minutes, no travel, no waiting, $0, tip included.

I usually go 2-3 weeks between, but can get a haircut "on demand" if needed.

I used to pay $15 at Cost Cutters and then come home and fix it with my Wahl clipper set anyway.

I moved from NYC to DC a bit less than a year ago. Since moving, I can't believe the cost of a haircut in DC relative to NYC.

In NYC my barber was $28 plus a $6-7 tip (so a total of $35). I have tried several barbers in DC. All three have charged $35 before tip.

The cost isn't my biggest complaint. I also feel as though the quality just isn't there. Oh well... I guess if anyone has a barber that they would recommend in DC, I would appreciate the referral!

No. I do it myself. Bought clippers from Walmart decades ago. The cost savings has been incredible.

The official senior cut is $12 where I get my hair cut. I pay $17-$20 as I also get a nice neck massage, and the last time I went in she sent me home with a dozen eggs. I have used her for 25+ years.

A few years ago she was able to open her own shop. In conversations over the years, I have heard about her son from preschool thru his present college studies, and she has listened to me about our daughters. She was a single mom for a period of time, persevered and now is an independent business woman.

Long story short, I overpay for every haircut I get, but I enjoy doing so. Every person I have sent to her shop has been happy with her; she's a genuinely nice person, and a skilled barber.

I tend to get a little shaggy before I go in for a cut, my hair doesn't get as long as it was in the 70ties, as wife drags me in. I guess I'll never be able to grow an old-man pony tail.

I pay $14 + $4 tip for a beard trim and haircut with a shave/hot towel. Honestly, the cost is irrelevant. I personally enjoy the 30 minutes of relaxing conversation with my barber who is a good friend and has been cutting my hair since ~2005. Some things you can't put a price on.

$18 + $3-4 tip. I've had the same barber for over ten years now...I have no problem giving him a nice end of year extra tip in addition to the per visit tips.

Clippers done by my wife for around the last 7 years or so. Got tired of the wacky 2nd barbers conversations and my barber was asking for pointers on her sideline business.

I pay $55 + tip (which varies) for a haircut. Then again, that's a women's haircut. I also have long hair and I only have to get my hair cut three times a year, so over the course of a year I spend $165 (plus tip) on haircuts. I also get my hair highlighted (don't ask about that price for that with long hair). But my hair is the only thing I splurge on. I am not into nails, shoes, shopping/clothes, or other girly things.

OP here. Ask and you shall receive. As of this moment summary is:

Men who specified the total paid:
n=73
Average total paid: $21.24 (range $7-$65)
Of those that broke down price and tip, average price: $16.26 Range $5-$50
Of those that broke down price and tip, average tip: $4.63 (28%) Range $0-$17.5
Note: the average total paid is different than sum of average price and tip because 10 responders gave total paid without breakdown of tip.

Men who specified price only but did not indicate amount of tip:
n=15
Average price $23.7 Range $2.5-$140

Men who stated they cut their own hair: 26
Men who got their hair cut by family member: 17

Women who specified both price and tip:
n=5
Average price $52.6 Range $38-$80
Average tip $13.4 (25%) Range $5-$20
Average total: $66.0 Range $50-$100

Women who specified price only but did not indicate amount of tip:
n-1
Average $45. Range N/A

Note: I excluded data from haircuts abroad, price with coupons, and prices that poster stated were historical.

$23 + $6 tip. Includes cut and shampoo, occasionally free beer. Every 4 weeks. Suburban location, not a chain. Fun place, best cut I've ever had, convenient hours, 1/2 mile from home. No flowbee for me, thanks.

This.
Wife has to do my neck.

Was paying $30+tip for an awesome cut by a perfectionist, but it got hard to make appointments, and I took a chance on "pro" clipper for ~$50, and found I could do almost as good a job myself. That was probably a dozen cuts ago.

$20/month for a 30min appointment. I believe the haircut is only $14 but I like to leave a good tip. She is a good friend who gives a great men's haircut and is always a pleasure to talk to. I could get it cheaper but it's only a few dollars--happy to support her small, one-owner/operator local business.
