What time do you start your day?

Post by AerialWombat » Wed Mar 13, 2019 6:08 am

I’ve lived a largely unstructured life for so long that I feel like I’ve lost touch with the reality of work. But having recently started a third business and soon to be launching a non-profit (glutton for punishment???), I need to set some sort of work schedule for myself.

I know “9-5” are ye olde bankers hours, but what is the current norm for when people get up and go to work?

Before I retired I was up each weekday at 4:50 AM and at my desk by 6:20. Since retiring I’m up each day around 5:30 - 6:00...

When I was working, I got up at 6am and was at my desk by 7am. I am much more productive early in the day. Old habits are hard to break. In retirement I still get up by 6am. For whatever reason, I cannot sleep in.

I get to the office around 8am and leave between 5 and 5:30. I'm an attorney.

Up at 5:45.
At the office by 6:20
Use the onsite gym, shower, grab coffee and a bite and hit my desk around 7:30

This allows me to leave tor home around 4~4:30pm without guilt (except days I have late meetings) and spend quality time with my kids.

Nevertheless I still see lots of people, even parents with young children, who routinely roll in at 9 or 10am and work past 6pm. Never understood that :confused

I'm normally up at 5:15am and in the office before 6. The only caveat to this is on Tuesday and Friday when I bring both kids to school/daycare since my wife has meetings those days (I'll get to my office around 7am on those days).

At work for 6:00 and leave at 2:30. I wake up at 4:30.

I don't really like waking up that early, but I'm used to it at this point (i.e. I don't fall asleep on the drive in). Getting home early far outweighs that though as I still have quite a bit of daylight to enjoy. Plenty of time to work out, start dinner without feeling rushed, or just crack a beer and put my feet up.

Walk to my office (down the hallway) at 7:50. Exercise at lunch. Finish at 4:30 or 5.

Tried the wake up early thing. Less productive and always tired..not for me.

My entire 42-year career was in radio and television broadcasting. In that industry, there is no such thing as a "standard schedule". One day I might have been scheduled in to work at 5:00 AM, the next day 2:30 PM, the next at midnight. (In fact for a while this was my "standard" schedule for a few weeks: two days of sign-on, two days of overnights, and one day of sign-off.)

In 1981, my supervisor discovered that I knew which end of a soldering iron was hot, so I got moved to a maintenance and repair position. That worked out well, and I ultimately retired two years ago from the Chief Engineer position at a television station. But it did require incredibly crazy hours.

Now, I get up every morning at 5:30 AM. DW is still working until the end of this year, and that's the time the alarm goes off for her so that she can get out the door and to work on time.

Check back with me next year, when neither of us has to be on the job at a particular time.
It’s taken me a lot of years, but I’ve come around to this: If you’re dumb, surround yourself with smart people. And if you’re smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you.

Wake up at 5:30, get to work at either 7am or 8am depending on the day. I prefer going in at 7am but due to work responsibilities it's not always possible. Schedule will change somewhat when I have to start dropping the baby off at daycare on the way to work.

I have always kind of been a morning person. My parents always were/are as well. I agree with some of the posts above. I love getting off work in time to enjoy some sunshine and have a minute to relax before starting dinner, etc.

Wow, ya'll make me feel like a total bum. :D

Until literally just today, my routine for several years has been getting up between 8 and 8:30, starting work around 10am, calling it a day by 2pm. I work from home.

Thanks so much for the insight into what's more typical. I have the feeling this will quickly become my "new normal".

At 5:30 am I was at the rec.center swimming. It's a beautiful warm pool. When I arrived the parking lot was already packed.
Very impressed considering it was pouring snow.

We're up at 5:30am, pretty much 7 days a week regardless of what's going on. Wife starts her 5min commute at 6:30am, I walk my son to daycare and my daughter's bus arrives at 7:04am. I'm at the office about 7:10am. I work from home Wednesdays and every other Friday, wife works from home Tuesdays, so that changes things up a bit.

I'm a morning person, so I'm up and out of bed by 6 on workdays, and by 7 on other days. Of course, I have to fight L.A. traffic to get to the office, but I more or less set my own schedule other than the classes I teach, so I try to schedule my day aimed at having evenings free.

When I was working, I was at my desk around 6:30 and left at 3:30. I liked that hour before most of the others started arriving as an undisturbed time for getting my best work done.

Wake up at 2:30am, at my desk by 3:30am, make some phone calls and usually out the door by 4:30pm.
...Just kidding. You guys get up way too early!
Like AerialWombat, I work from home and the schedule is nonstandard. When heavy projects come in, there is no schedule, just a sprint. I work til I drop, then wake up and keep going. On less busy days I don’t keep a set schedule in order to allow recovery time from the heavier days. But otherwise I’m up between 7-9, and work from 9 or 10 until early/mid-afternoon.

Alarm rings at 6:24, one snooze later I'm out of bed (unless my son wakes me first). Coffee and a slow morning routine have me in my car by 7:45-7:50 and I'm at my desk by 8:15. Try to leave by 5:15 or 5:30 most days.

Looks like we've got early risers here.

Even more interesting if we get how many hours of sleep info also. I suspect we'll see less than the conventional recommended 8 hours of sleep.

Up: 4:30PM Work: 8:30AM. Sleep: 11PM.

Not here. If there is anybody up at my house past 10pm, it is an anomaly. Kids to bed at 7:30pm and wife and I are rarely up past 9:30pm. I have no idea how I made it through school, more than a decade of virtually never getting more than 6hrs of sleep. I can barely function unless I get 8 now.

I still get the same amount of sleep now as when I worked, about eight hours. One difference is now I occasionally take an afternoon nap!

Used to rise at 6, then power walk, then shower and 10 minute drive to office by 8:15 to 8:30.

Now it's anywhere from 6 to 9:30, then coffee, then a LONGER power walk. And no office.

Retirement is great.

Up by 4:40am, run 5-6 miles (4x per week) and in the office by 6:20.

Being physically present at work ends between 4:45 and 6pm (no lunch), depending on the day. Emails are checked and some responded to in the evenings.

In bed by 9:15pm.

I've recently started trying to wake up earlier, which for me is 6-630. I do some yoga and meditating, do some straightening up, plan my day and figure out what chores I need to do that night. I'm out the door usually by 8:30, work 9-6. I'd love to switch up my schedule and work earlier and leave earlier, but office culture is already "stay super late" and sometimes I feel like the early bird clocking out at 6. Stuff always pops up around the 5 oclock hour. I try to get into bed by 930ish and I'll read or watch tv until I fall asleep (usually around 1030).

Working in high tech, alarm at 6:30, into the office between 8 and 8:30, and was usually the first one in. I could get a lot done in that hour or so before anyone else showed up.

Now retired, I get up between 7 and 7:30, eat breakfast, go to 8:30 morning meditation, then the gym afterwards.

I can't believe the number of early risers here. I am (somewhat) envious.

When I was working, I got up typically by 8 am, into work by 9. Left work around 6, in bed between 12-1 AM. Now retired, I woke up a little before 8 this morning. Sometimes a little nap in the afternoon.

I am an oddball night shift employee.
3 - 12hr nights weekly

Up at 6:30am, get kids to school, gym, errands, lunch.
2pm-4pm nap
Work 7p - 7a

Sleep 8-2
Get kids and start all over again

When working 8hr days:
5am wake
7am work
4-5p home

I recently read theBook “why we sleep” and it really turned me on to getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. The book has really helped me focus a lot more on getting a proper amount of sleep each night Book “why we sleep“ and it really turned me on to getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

As you get older sleeping seems to be more of a problem. I'm definitely not a morning person but due to the traffic and parking issues in my area, I try to get into work by 7am. That way my commute in most cases will be under 30 minutes. The later you go in, the worse the traffic. Today I thought I'd be in by 8:10 (got off to a late start) but within 2 miles of the office there was a traffic jam and it took me 20 minutes to go the last 2 miles.

I've been fortunate that for much of my life I didn't use an alarm clock. When I lived elsewhere I often got in between 8 and 9, worked until 5-6 and then went to the gym later at night (6,7,8pm?). Working out in the morning isn't my thing.

Around here I can be on the road at 630am and there are a bunch of cars already on the highways and I wonder "why aren't those people home sleeping?"
