Luxury vacation towns ??

Post by Hmwannabe » Wed Feb 27, 2019 9:41 pm

My DH and I are curious what other places around the US are luxury cute little towns like 30a (Rosemary Beach, Seaside). We are looking for places to vacation that are upscale, walkable to enjoy great food, and relaxing and not big city. We love to lay at the beach all day, then walk around the small shops and boutiques and eat at fresh seafood restaurants. Any one have suggestions of where to look?

Ocean Beach, Fire Island NY. Note you can only get there by ferry from Bayshore (Long Island), and the seafood literally comes right off the boats, some of the best beach on the east coast as well.

A magical place where my family escapes to once a year so we can pretend we are are wealthy (we aren’t, we stay far away from the beach).

Yes. Perfect! If you have to pick one, Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw). Unlike any place you've been. No cars allowed; passenger ferry to get there. A true destination. Charlevoix, Traverse City and that whole area of Northern Michigan (not quite the UP) is incredible.

If you want to come to New England....Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Block Island, but I would suggest May or September, to avoid the crowds.

I love SB too and used to live there. But I wouldn't consider it a cute little town so I didn't list it as it may be a bit more crowded / bigger than what the OP is looking for.

Newport, RI definitely not Newport CA. Newport CA is overcrowded pretentious and overly congested. Newport RI is much more refined (think old money vs new money) relaxing picturesque and interesting (fascinating history, exquisite architecture)

Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are also fine choices.

On the west coast Santa Barbara is fits the bill perfectly though. I’m from the east coast and live in California and hate California with a passion. But Santa Barbara is one of my favorite places. Excellent scenery, many wineries, great hotels, great service and very walkable downtown. It’s not as quaint as the east coast destinations I mentioned though

For those southern New England destinations, definitely a vote for the shoulder seasons; before July 4th, after Labor Day.

Block Island, Nantucket especially

Huh. I never thought of Friday Harbor as luxury. It also, like many other places in Washington, has gotten crowded enough to lose one of the main sources of its charm.

Quaint coastal villages cease feeling very quaint when the most prominent feature of the waterfront is the parking lot where 300+ cars queue up for the ferry on sunny days.

Falmouth or Chatham on Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard, DW and I found Nantucket too boring, but it was people doing just what you said, beach during day, lunch back to beach, then dinner on the water/boat repeat....

My DW is from the Detroit area. I'd never been to northern Michigan. We visited for a week a couple summers ago. My goodness, it was incredible. I couldn't believe how nice some of the little towns were, and the landscape near Sleeping Bear Dunes was just absolutely stunning. It felt like some posh New England beach town...but in the midwest.

Alright, what is 30a?
Googling for "rosemary beach and seaside" led me to the Florida Panhandle. 30A is a side road off US 98 that runs along the beach, about halfway between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City. Besides the above-named towns, there are some state parks.

Years ago we drove along US 98 through there, but didn't know to turn off onto 30A. Looks like it would have been a cute detour even though we weren't planning to stop in that area.

Have not been there myself but St Augustine, FL would seem to fit.

Charleston and Savannah are cities, not "towns," but have a relaxed Southern air to them. Both have great food and walkable centers with a lot of history and architecture.

I second the recommendation for Cape May. It's unique for all the Victorian architecture and stately homes it has. Very walkable with small shops, great seafood restaurants, great beach, great bed and breakfasts, etc.

Ocean-side but not hot/sunny beachy ... also not necessarily uber luxury but nice...
La Connor or Gig Harbor WA
Mendocino CA
Monterey/Carmel-by-the-sea CA
Camden ME
Southwest Harbor ME (or other towns on Mt Desert Island)
Portland ME is a small city vs town but downtown is easily walked/shopped/dined

Hilton Head Island.

My brother has owned at Seaside for over 20 years. The developers have really junked it up with over commercialization. They have not done any favors to the home owners there.

Bingo....there should be enough places there to accommodate your yacht and you have to either be a resident or get a pass from your rental to get on Citizens Beach ( bring your own chairs, etc)

as for 30a area, I'd prefer Okaloosa Island, as it's less crowded, has very good beaches, and a short ride to Destin harbor area and close enough to FWB's services, but by no means is it upscale... but you are close enough to Destin's restaurants.

Carmel-By-The-Sea in CA. 1.5 hours south of the Bay Area. Right near Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Big Sur. Absolutely beautiful.

We go to 30a often. Ideal for family vacations as you can park the car and ride bikes or walk all week while there.

We like staying in Watercolor to have access to the beach resort pool, grill and bathrooms. Check to see if the house you rent in WC comes with passes as all the ones we’ve stayed in have.

Also an easy walk from WC to Seaside town center for food trucks, dinner, shopping, ice cream.

Love 30a.

Protip: fly into Panama City Beach instead of Destin. Believe its called Northwest Florida Beaches.
There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means.

You are weather constrained? This is all from so many summers North of Toronto in Muskoka lakes.

Basically you have 4 months. July and August can be wretchedly hot and humid. Late August and September can be cold and wet.

June and July also enjoy the benefit of Black Flies (June) and voracious mosquitoes. August is better except at night.

My best guess would be September after Labour Day. Not so crowded and with luck nice weather. Not likely to be hot and humid.

Again avoiding the July August rush it's an amazing place. Edwardian (1910) resort town; renovated.

Others go for the (George Bernard) Shaw Theatre Festival. And winery tours.

Lake Ontario is *cold* though for those who like to swim.

The rush hour in and out of Toronto even that far west is toxic so try to avoid the highways and border crossings at those times if you can. I suspect US Customs will be a bit more jumpy given Canada has legalized. Conversely Canada has rules 're firearms that need to be checked carefully by any border crosser.
