Confirm that IPhone 5s Won't Work on Verizon Network as of Late 2019?

Post by Kennedy » Sun Jan 20, 2019 12:15 am

I spoke to a Verizon technician who told me they were just notified that IPhone 5s models will no longer work on the Verizon network as of sometime in late 2019. Can anyone please confirm this?

Here’s an article that suggests this comment was correct.

That matches up with what Verizon is saying here.

Even though the iPhone 5s has LTE it doesn't have HD Voice, and that appears to be why they're giving it the boot. Only iPhone 6 and up have HD Voice.

I read this as you won’t be able to newly activate a 5, not that already activated ones would turn into a brick and stop working... I assume they will continue working on a grandfathered basis? I could be wrong.

It sounds to me as if you cannot activate a 5s now and any existing 5s devices will stop working when Verizon retires it’s CDMA a network at the end of 2019.

Once the CDMA network is turned off any phone that doesn’t support VoLTE will no longer be able to make phone calls. Depending on what Verizon does either your phone will be deactivated or only support a data connection.

I’m thrilled they are doing this. Companies spend too much time and money supporting obsolete legacy tech that then hinders the current state of the art deployment. All of this wasted CDMA spectrum will get LTE and 5G uses.

They keep telling me the same thing, and they seem to be rolling it out by city. Three of the 5 phones on our plan will need to be upgraded, but we'll deal with it at the last possible moment, as usual.

Well, this is disappointing. I've got a perfectly good iPhone 5c that will apparently become a paperweight in the next year. I like a small phone and they don't make this size any more.

Cheapest replacement is refurbished (ugh) or about $500 if I stick with Apple brand. This is not the kind of progress I'm fond of.

A solution for you
https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/01 ... ce-for-249
"At a new special price, those who are interested can grab a brand new, unopened iPhone SE for only $249 with 32GB or 128GB for $299. They come fully unlocked sporting the same specs as when it was introduced in 2016. As a refresher, the iPhone SE includes the A9 Apple processor, Touch ID, and the four-inch form factor."

Thanks Bogle7. I really do like the small phone and the SE seems to be the same size as my current 5c. Price is right. I'll be giving this some thought.

Grab one while you can because, with the discount, these likely won't last too long.
Yep. They didn't last long. :happy

I opened this thread thinking that my SE might count as a "5s" in this regard, but apparently not. I paid about $500 for my SE almost three years ago, and it's served me well. Here's to another two or three years, as I'm rather cheap. :)

I was looking to upgrade from my IPhone 7 plus to IPhone X Max, but asked about being worried about getting a new phone right before 5G comes out which we keep hearing is 2019. they said my phone was ok, but older phones like iPhone 5 wont work on 5G.

None of Apple's phones are 5G. AFAIK, hardly any 5G phones are for sale at this point (although several are expected to be released this year.) But all the 4G phones currently being sold should continue to work for many years; considering that they're only now getting around to shutting down 3G, a 4G shutdown is a long way off. And given the technical limitations of 5G, 4G might have a longer lifespan than 3G did, especially outside urban areas.
