Which iPad?

Post by ThankYouJack »

My spouse is looking to get an iPad for general web browsing, instagram, recipes and apps for the kids. We’re leaning towards just the general iPad 6th? Gen for $329. I’m guessing it’s powerful enough to last about 4 years of general light use. Should we just go with that one or anything else we should consider?

Regular iPad 6th gen is fine. Look at the 10.5" iPad Pro if having a physical keyboard that doesn't need charging is appealing to you, but it will come at a pretty steep price. (and I say this as someone who sprung for the new 11" Pro.)

The 9.7-inch (2018 model) is perfect for the needs you describe, and it was on sale recently for as little as $229, keep an eye out for sales. The 11-inch Pro is a fantastic piece of hardware but at 3x the cost, and really can't do anything the cheaper one can't do, as the main limitation is iOS rather than the hardware.

Given your use case and the current price difference between the regular iPad and Pro, I’d go with the regular iPad 9.7.

As far as I know, iPad memory cannot be supplemented by the user. So get the model with the highest amount of memory you might use. In my case a year or so back that was 256G. I never thought I would need that, till loading it up with movies for an upcoming trip, and using virtually all that 256.

If you don't ever use it, though, huge memory is just a cost without benefit.

We had the same needs and opted for the 128 GB 9.7 iPad instead of the pro back in November. We're quite happy with it, and I'm quite happy not to have paid the premium for the pro.

Based on your intended use, you should be able to save a bit by buying the wifi-only version. Even though I've never inserted a SIM into my various iPads, I've always had to buy the SIM version since the wifi-only does not come with an internal GPS chip, and my primary OS app requires GPS.

Get the refurb'd 10.5" iPad Pro 64GB.

The ProMotion Display and extra storage over the base price non-Pro iPad is worth the extra cost. It will easily last you 4+ years. You can thank me later. :D

Where was the model on sale for $229? A brand new one at that price sounds pretty good to me!

Thanks all. I went with a refurbished 6th gen one for $279. I also got a stand case on Amazon for $15. Tough to beat those prices although I probably could have waited and saved more. I had a Gen 1 iPad for years and later when it was super slow traded it into Target for $200.

If I ever need to store or watch a lot of movies, I figure I could use my MacBook Pro

Ha, I was following the thread to see comments...I still have mine in the box. Still debating if I want to keep. I bought at the $229 price.

Wow, that seems like a great price, if you're in the market for an iPad 9.7". Now that I've missed the deal, I guess I'll wait to see if the deal comes around again. I'm not in a big rush to get another iPad. I still have my iPad mini from a few years ago. I still like it, but it doesn't really perform optimally. I also got a Kindle Fire 7" for ~$20 during Amazon Prime Day (if that's what it's called). It's not great, but I wanted to try it out. I figure I could use it when traveling and using hotel wifi or something.

Wow, that was quick! Let me keep my eye open, I've been seeing a deal once/twice a week. Are you in FL by any chance?

Not in Florida. My iPad arrives today. I paid $279 for it through Apple (Refurbished). So I'm all set, but I'm sure others would love a great deal. Thanks

Awesome, let me know how you like it once you get it. Still great deal! It would be great to get your initial feedback.
