Best Albums of 2018

Post by heartwood » Wed Dec 19, 2018 2:06 pm

Many best of lists are coming out. Here's mine for albums I've enjoyed this year.

I'll start with three:

Brandi Carlile, By The Way, I Forgive You

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Tearing at the Seams

Phosphorescent, C'est La Vie

Meh. There's nothing more subjective than "best" music. Everyone has different tastes. I don't force my friends to listen to my faves, and they shouldn't really care what my faves are. Neither should anyone here, frankly.

Post #3. My over/under was on post #5.

I actually like to hear what others think is "good". Yes, subjective. There are so many artists/albums you can never discover these days without some type of help.

Best to just not open the thread with a title you don't like. :?

Agreed. As someone with eclectic and wide-ranging tastes I'm always on the lookout for new music. Most recommendations end up being a miss, but to me it's worth it to explore. Music is a significant part of my life.

And nobody is "forcing" anything on anyone. I am not sure I will ever understand the insistence on posting in threads just to express lack of interest in the subject matter.

Mitski - Be the Cowboy

I got to see her live in a pretty small club and man was that worth it. Won't happen again in a venue of that size, unfortunately.

Music has been pretty bad these last few years. It's hard to recommend anything from 2018.

Maybe listen to some of the recommended albums and find something "not pretty bad".

Ignore the actual wording of the thread title and interpret it as “what are your favorite albums of 2018” and suddenly it is actionable and useful. And the OP’s post is actually just that.

My car radio seems stuck on 80s on 8, so thanks everyone for inspiring me to put some new stuff on hold at the library :)

Great posts, I am always on the lookout for new music. Seeing others viewpoints is pretty useful to check out new stuff. My listening is a bit repetitive lately so these will be good to have a listen to.

some good choices here (happy to see indie skew).

A few others: Bottle It In by Kurt Vile; Sparkle Hard by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks; Clean by Soccer Mommy (Your Dog for song of the year); and U2's Songs of Experience (I think this was released last December but I will count as 2018 album. Their best since Achtung Baby and blows away the junk they've put out over past 15 years).

I like the two songs released from O.A.R.'s new album, The Mighty, which isn't technically coming out for a few months, but you can listen to 20% of it.

It was released towards the end of 2017, but I really like "Sleep Well Beast" by The National (indie rock genre).

Jeff Tweedy - Together At Last
Aaron Lee Tasjan - Karma For Cheap
Will Hoge - My American Dream

I second the above choices for Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell

Investing and music, my two favorite subjects! This year I decided the best value in music was switching from buying CDs to paying for Google Play Music, more music for less money.

The War and Treaty- Healing Tide (fresh with gospel influence)
Van Morrison & Joey DeFrancesco- You're Driving Me Crazy (two great old musicians having fun)

I own the next hot stock- VTSAX

DItto. The best thing I did this year was to finally get a stereo again (long story, but I haven't had one for a couple of years). And, rather than getting a disc player or turntable, I got a media player (BlueSound Vault 2i that can rip and store the few CDs I have that are not on streaming media). I also got awesome speakers (MartinLogan ElectroMotion ESL X and ML sub) and an Anthem Integrated Amp with room correction software. My wife and I have spent hours listening; I have no idea why we waited so long to bring music back.

So, no more CDs. I would like to plug TIDAL as a streaming service. The software is clumsy, but the sound is at least CD quality, with many MQA selections.

In the past, I'd see lists like the one here, and it was too expensive to buy all the CDs. Now, I will make a list and listen. If I like one, great. If not, no big loss.
Okay, I get it; I won't be political or controversial. The Earth is flat.

Yup - I remember a thread like this last year.
Perhaps the theory is those like minded in finance should be like minded in their musical tastes (but I'm not seeing it!).
