Adult Games / Board Games - Recommendations

Post by fishandgolf » Sat Dec 15, 2018 5:54 pm

During the Holidays we always get together with family and friends...all adults .......usually several different gatherings during that time.

Each year we play a few games....some board type games (Catch Phrase, Pictionary, Scattergories, etc.).....a few trivia type. We're running out of new ideas. Anyone have any fun or entertaining games that you can recommend? We are not into any type of drinking games......too old for that stuff. We usually have anywhere from 4, 6 or 8 players. :P

Concept is sort of charades turned into a board game.

Codenames is a pretty good game especially for say 6-8 people-- it's sort of a word association guessing game.

Cover your assets is a pretty simple card game (matching pairs and trying to steal them from other players) but I've found most people enjoy it (but only meant to be played up to 6).

Sequence is great fun. We play it almost every time the family gets together.

Snippets (2-8 players) - cards have a few letters in sequence (usually 3) - players identify real words that contain that exact letter sequence (it could be at the beginning, middle or end of your word) and write down as many words as possible in the specified time period. At the end of the period, everyone discloses their word lists and you get rid of the words that someone else also listed. Then you determine your score for the round based on # remaining words, bonus for having fewest crossed off words, bonus for having longest word, and special bonus (if the selected card has one). There are 3 decks (easy, medium, and hard) so you can choose a deck based on the skill level of the group.

Five Crowns (1 - 7 players) - Rummy-like card game where 1st round has 3 cards, 2nd round 4 cards, … all the way up to 13 cards. In first round 3's are wild, 2nd round 4's are wild, etc.

Bananagrams (2 - 8 players) - Letters are on tiles (like Scrabble only without points). You create Scrabble/crossword puzzle grid with your initial tiles. Each time someone uses up all their tiles, everyone has to draw a new tile. So speed is of the essence. As you draw new tiles you can modify your grid but it still has to work like Scrabble - you can't butt two words up against each other. You need to have sufficient table space for everyone.

I like Mexican train - a friend has it and it is fun for a group and flexible (i.e., don't need even numbers).

We enjoy Splendor (a card game), Agricola, Settlers of Catan and Shogun (which has a very cool random chance factor in battles).

It's from the folks that created "You don't know Jack".
Crazy fun!

Also, Quirkle and Blokus.

Our family and friends love Bohnanza. Four players is minimum and the more players the better. Instructions can be intimidating but you get the hang of it very quickly.

Settlers of Catan
Ticket to Ride

Great games! They offer a good balance of strategy and luck so that it is harder for any one player to always dominate and new players stand a chance against experienced.

Expansion and alternate versions are available when you want more complicated games or more players.

Code Names is good with moderate size groups; easy to learn and handles various sizes well.

Settlers of Catan is a modern classic, but best with 3-4 players.

Citadels is another that handles various size groups well and is easy to learn.

Dominion is pretty good, but more for those who can take more time to learn.

Another vote for Codenames

There's a great website called boardgamegeek.com that is to games what bogleheads.org is to DIY investing. It will tell you great games for different size groups, different age groups, how long of a game you want, etc.

Thanks BH's for the great ideas! Many of these I have not heard of and look forward to doing a little research to find out more.

Thanks to those of you for mentioning the "Mexican Train Dominoes".......used to play this with FIL.....haven't played it in a few years since he passed.......but it is a great game.

Victoria........thanks for the link on the Mensa annual Mind Games. DW was looking for something like this for son-in-law........he into the deep thinking stuff........

Some of the games we've really enjoyed in the past were those where you can sit around the fireplace....in comfortable chairs...in a small group and do things; I believe one was called "Scattergories". I'll check out the ones mentioned above but if someone knows of a game like this.....where we can sit around in comfortable chairs.....would like to hear about it.

Secret Hitler is a good game. It somewhat recreates the struggle between Hitler and the opposition during his rise to power.

7 Wonders is an interesting game. It’s hard to know who will ultimately win and involves strategy.

Apples to Apples is a fun game and can have lots of players.

Pandemic is supposed to be a collaborative game. Some folks like it while others find it boring, depending on dynamics.

Someone on another forum suggested Gloomhaven. We looked at it in a toy store—it’s huge and heavy and were intimidated by it but have read it’s great fun and has many layers and can be played by varying numbers of folks.

I’ve played Resistance Avalon and Codenames. They’re both fun. Telestrations and Secret Hitler are two other party games I’d recommend.

At least one evening or day during the holidays, get out of those comfy chairs. Find a local “escape room” and go play. Great fun for 6-8 people and you’ll be laughing and talking about it for a long time! :happy

Here's two frugal/bogleheadish games that are very much fun and have a low expense ratio :D

Who am I - guessing who you are by asking yes/no questions.

Mafia/Werewolves - finding who's the mafia killer/werewolf via group dynamics. You need to be a bigger group though (8 players at least). You can get creative and use a different theme (e.g. it's the great financial crisis 2 and people are getting fired by a secretly appointed advisor  ).

It sounds as if you are looking for a light, fun game, rather than a strategy board game like Catan, Ticket to Ride etc.

In that case, I would recommend Camel Up - it's a fun game about betting on camel racing!

Another vote for Codenames.

Someone recommended Gloomhaven earlier, and while that's as great game, you really want a group of people interested in long term gaming to play that one. I wouldn't play that at Christmas. Also the set up is pretty intense and may scare casual gamers away.

I've also heard good things about Sushi Go Party. I just ordered it to try out with my family over Christmas.

You might want a mix of physical and mental games. This can help keep everybody interested.

Twister was already mentioned but pool, darts, foosball, skittles, shove ha'penny, Kerplunk, Jenga can be a break from the endless stream of vocabulary games.

But if you want to add to the endless stream of vocabulary games: Boggle, perhaps with a Boglehead as a prize.

I saw a recommendation for Dominion -> you'll need an expansion plus base Dominion to handle 6 or 8. I really enjoy Dominion and have successfully had 8 player games (I have expansions) with 6 of the 8 never having played this type of game. This is a "deck building" strategy game.

Killer Bunnies is a very fun game for large groups, especially if a little drinking will be involved. Card game where your goal is to find the one winning card (randomly selected), kill your opponents Bunnies and try to prevent your own Bunnies from meeting a gruesome fate.
Munchkin is similar to Killer Bunnies in play and handling large groups. Very dungeons and dragons themed but in a cartoons and goofy way.

Codenames is a fun game and I think it handles up to 8. This is more of a typical party game like apples to apples or scattergories.

Saboteur is another interesting game I enjoy that can handle 8 people. Much like a few of the other mentions, this one is played where a few of the players end up trying to sabotage everyone else but no one knows who is a saboteur or not.

May be easiest to look some of these games up on boardgamegeek or YouTube. Tabletop on YouTube starring Will Wheaton is a great resource for seeing how a few of the more popular strategy games are played (they also have several party to games played through as well).
