Favorite Purchase of 2018?

Post by WhippingPost » Fri Dec 14, 2018 11:34 am

What was your favorite product you purchased in 2018? Could be big or small items. Mine is probably an American Giant Hoodie that I have ended up wearing almost every day this fall and winter.

Runner up: Kinco mittens. Cheap, but warm especially after waterproofing them.

You have been wearing the same hoodie, daily, for months?!

Nothing memorable that was tangible. Only thing on my mind right now is a week long vacation to Puerto Rico next month.

I wear it to take the dog out every morning. Warm enough to keep the chill away outside and comfy enough to wear inside while drinking coffee. And, yes, I wash it frequently.

I guess it was my new Prius prime—picked it up last night. It’s the 3rd new car I’ve bought in nearly 40 years and is just the way we ordered it—all the bells & whistles plus extended warranty, coating on the car so it stays shiny and resists stains, crossbars so things can be attached to roof!

I looked at the American Giant hoodie but, since I’m 6’ 6”, went with the Carhartt version in tall: https://www.carhartt.com/products/carha ... irt-100614
Love it!

However, the one purchase in 2018 that stands above all others is my 12.9” iPad Pro. I use it every day to browse the web, read books, read/respond to e-mail, watch Netflix, control Sonos/Nest, use as a bedside clock at night (at dimmest setting), view locally-saved documents & photos, etc. etc. etc. It’s my “most used” item of the year.

The cruise of a lifetime. It isn’t happening until 2020, but we locked it in this year. And are slowly, slowly, whittling away at the payment for it. A total of 49 days along the west coast of Central and South America, around Cape Horn, and finishing in Rio de Janiero.

R11 Chromebook for $232.

Always been a Mac person, and still use my iMac in the upstairs office for big things. But it's nice to have such an inexpensive option that I can use for internet things really quickly downstairs with the wife. I use "tent mode" all the time to read magazines. I use a separate Google login just for financial accounts, per recommendation on this forum.

I put together a 5.1 home theater system this year. I researched all the components and slowly put it together piece-by-piece, looking out for sales, scouring Craigslist, etc. The key part was hiring a professional to run speaker wires in the wall and mount the TV and rear speakers. I never would have done that in my more frugal days, but I'm *so* happy I did -- the install looks so clean without visible wires running everywhere. It makes me happy every time we use it.

Five boneless duck breast lobes. I've not seen them for ages, and the store appears to have had them as a anomaly - a case of them accidentally included in their order from the wholesaler. Decent price as such things go, too. I still have three in my freezer.

Two week guided tour in Africa including 3 separate (photographic) safari's. Purchased this year. Going next year. I may actually have to start a bucket list just to check this sucker off.

Oops! I just remembered. I also paid for the wedding of my youngest daughter (3 weddings down and paid for, 1 to go). Guess I have to amend my answer or else somehow, some way, karma will catch up with me.

An very special and unusual March cruise along the Norwegian coast, from Bergen up around to Kirkenes (the Russian border), and then back again.

Beautiful scenery... it's just gorgeous.
And we saw the Northern Lights, which was one of the goals.

We also had a bit of excitement not yet experienced on any cruises, during the bit we were in the North Sea. Impossible to stand up... we almost crawled into bed for safety. It was announced in advance, and was late evening, so everyone was prepared. (And no meal service then, fortunately!)
I'd always wondered how I'd handle that. We figured we'd still not be seasick, but I was worried about being scared (er, terrified?).
A real "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" for a few hours.
And it was just FUN.

We want to return at some point, but can't decide upon 24 hours sun or night.

The only trip that was better was our trip to Japan the previous year, which was probably our all-time major special trip/event/anything. It was *that* special.
We had some truly amazing experiences.
By far, "exceeding expectations"...

This is the part of "saving for years" that is, well, just GREAT. :happy

We can't think of better ways to spend that money now*.
There are no "things" that we want to purchase these days, other than basics.
We are trying to get rid of things.
(It's amazing how *fast* things disappear after we set them on the curbside in hopes someone would want <whatever>.)

RM

* IF we needed medical or other "care", that would immediately become the top, including "care while traveling", if that's what it took.
This signature is a placebo. You are in the control group.

Really glad I sprung $20 for an electric "shoe, boot, and glove dryer" at a local bargain-deal store. I guess they regularly cost $35 or so, and I didn't know if they were any good. I think they are. Way better than stuffing crumpled newspaper into damp shoes.

The one I got look almost exactly like this. I deliberately got the el cheapo model that has no fan, works by convection, because I didn't want to find out if the "quiet fan" on the deluxe model was actually quiet. Since they only consume 36 watts (and I checked with my Kill-A-Watt gadget!) I don't think it is likely to set fire to anything, but I did end up spending another $10 to buy a timed auto-shut-off switch--the unit I bought has no on-off switch and no timer. Overnight, shoes are dry, and there isn't any "hot" smell or evidence that any damage is being done. Be interesting to see if the heating unit ever burns out.

Women's World Cup tickets. We went to 4 games in Canada in 2015 and the kids seemed to like it, so we kind of knew we wanted to go to France in 2019. The difference this time around is we're doing it bigger. Instead of 1 week, we're basically doing the whole tournament. 2 weeks in Grenoble seeing 5 games and 1 week in Lyon seeing both semifinals and the finals (with a week off to see the Alps in between - we are skipping the quarterfinals). We will see some of the games with extended family and possibly some games with some friends.

Hopefully the US makes the semis as it would be a bit disappointing to not see them, but a women's world cup final will be an experience regardless of who is playing. I want to go to a men's world cup final some day (we'll probably enter the ticket lottery in 2026), but the women's game is so much cheaper.

My gravity/weighted blanket-!!!!!

I read about this last fall and last Dec I ordered one.

I LOVE it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QGOuLlukas

I bought mine from this Canadian company- it took 3 weeks to get it as they were backordered
but they are a good company and my blanket is good quality:

https://embrace.tryrest.com/

Weighted blankets have been around awhile - used for children with add and autism.
Then they found it helps adults sleep!

the theory behind it is this:
"Deep Touch Pressure helps with Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia, ASD, ADHD, PTSD and OCD".

I have always had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep and as I got older it got worse.
This really helps me. It was a little over $200 as I recall and well worth it my opinion.
