Regarding iPhone. Is there an app for day vs night?

Post by kenoryan » Tue Dec 04, 2018 10:31 pm

My elderly mom is slowly getting dementia. Recently after the time change, she has started to get disoriented and at 4 am/pm she can’t tell if it’s day or night. It’s causing her some problems. She’s pretty good with her iPhone. I’m wondering if there is an app that will change the wallpaper to reflect day vs night

Off topic, but this phenomenon of increased confusion late in the day for dementia sufferers is known as "sundowning." You might already be familiar with the term but, if not, I thought it might give you something to search for/read about. It happened with my dad, and is now happening with my mom. It sucks, but it's part of life. Hang in there.

Google> iPhone Live Wallpapers

I know android has this option and only under the assumption iPhone can do the same.

I realize that you are asking about iphone apps for changing the wallpaper. For what it's worth, I had a similar problem with my mother. I bought a desk clock that displays time of day, day of the week, portion of the day (morning, afternoon, evening, night), etc. It was a big help for her. The clock I bought is very similar to the one shown here: https://www.amazon.com/SVINZ-Dementia-A ... B01MZ45WUP

Good luck!

Set clock(s) to 24-hour time.
It is what I have done for 30+ years.

The iPhone has an option to use 24-hour time display.

The lock screen shows the time in a large font. If you don't have the 24-hour option set it would not help OP because AM/PM is not shown.

Of course a lot of people, even young people are not comfortable with 24-hour time format, but it's one option. If she doesn't use a lock screen, the time at the top of the desktop *will* show AM/PM, but it's pretty small.

Another option is an Amazon Echo Dot. I ask mine what time it is throughout the day and the response includes AM/PM. There are a lot of handy uses of the Echo, I think, for elderly folks. I suppose in my mid-60s I somewhat qualify :?

She can’t do 24 hour clock. Just doesn’t understand it. She is/was very smart. She has a BS in Economics and Math. But at 86, her mental capacity is suddenly very limited. I know about Sundowning. Just looking for an app for the iPhone. We are doing the lights and shades etc but at 4 pm, it’s dark when she gets up from her nap. She also wakes up at 4 am and thinks it’s evening sometimes.

Thanks. I’m going to get this for her. And we have Google home but she just won’t talk to it. So maybe this clock will work.

This is a frustrating thing for everyone involved. My father in law would call us at 4am asking when we would be there to take him to the bank...then again at 5:30am. Takes a lot of patience.

Made me laugh. And not laugh. Frustrating as they age, often stubbornness is the biggest obstacle to an elderly person having a better quality of life.

Told my mid-80s mother that, after a minor traffic accident backing out of her driveway, that she should be opening her garage, walking down her 20 foot driveway, looking both ways for vehicles (she's on a dead end with 2 houses), and then going back to her car. It's called "situational awareness". She said "I'm not going to do that" in the tone that most of us with elderly parents are used to.

Don't know how much it would help but sounds like you're looking for something like:

macOS Mojave dynamic wallpaper

https://www.jetsoncreative.com/mojave/

You could just get her a mac...

Or maybe just open the window blinds? And if she doesn't have a window, you might look into Atmoph, Winscape or similar offerings.

Or make your own "false window" [what a great idea to reuse all those recycled laptops]

But going back to the original problem, doesn't look like there's a goto iOS app. I searched and found these as possible leads that might do or help do what you want:

You can change the color tones for a set period of time every day using “Night Shift” under the Settings> Display and Brightness. Designed to make “the colors of your display” shift “ to the warmer end of the color spectrum after dark” to “help you get a better night’s sleep.” You can set it to any period, so that PM displays “more warm” tones and AM displays “less warm” tones. The downside is that half of everyday will have all the colors on the phone on every app look “muddy.”

OP: You should definitely bring this need up to Apple. This is the kind of “accessibility” feature that is likely to be of interest to them. And very easy to add.

Also, if your Mom asks Siri the time while holding the phone — “ Hey Siri, what time is it?” — the answer will include AM or PM.
