Five days ago I received an email from Verizon asking me to activate Home Network Protection, a McAfee product. Is this a good idea to turn it on?

It is unnecessary.

To stay secure, just make sure you keep your (wireless) router firmware up to date, along with your computer's OS updates. If you use Windows, make sure that Windows Defender is enabled.
