Anything I should be wary of when buying cell phone from app?

Post by genjix »

Hello

I use an app offer up to buy and sell things locally. One person has a new cell phone sealed in box for sale for a great price. Wanted to see what precaution I should take

Here you go: It's really easy to check if you're buying a stolen phone - The Verge

Ask the seller for the phone's IMEI, MEID, or ESN number.

A direct link: Stolen Phone Checker

(I fixed the spelling in the thread title "weary of" to "wary of".)

Meet them at the cell carrier store of your choice (The service you have). Have them activate on your plan before you leave. If it works, pay them and be on your way.

You may be able to activate another user's device that is currently being financed. Once the original owner stops payments, your previously activated device will stop working.

Thus, I would (1) verify that the ESN is not blacklisted or currently being financed and (2) activate the phone [1].

In China, many fake iPhone manufacturers exists [2, 3].

Make sure it's not "locked" for nonpayment under an installment plan. In addition check to be sure it not a "European Model" that might not work correctly in the U.S.

Meet the seller at the carrier's store to confirm the phone is not stolen. I sold a phone once and met the buyer at a Verizon kiosk in the mall.
