Christmas in Montreal?

Post by cruzbay » Tue Nov 06, 2018 11:15 am

My husband and I are deciding where to spend Christmas and the idea of Montreal was suggested. Anyone with experience spending the holiday there? We would stay downtown or in Old Montreal and do the holiday markets, museums, see the churches, ride the wheel, etc. Not sure of appropriate length of stay. Our travel dates are flexible but maybe Dec 20-27 or so. Any words of advice? Thanks so much!

My family does visit Montreal during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday frequently. This city about 10 degree colder than say Boston and your outdoor activities are very limited. So I would suggest a hotel with a nice pool AND hot tub. I have stayed at Le Westin (near old town), AC hotel and Holiday Inn Centre-ville Quest. All are good options. Both AC and holiday inn are newly built holiday with very nice pool.

Some other suggestions:
1) Go ice skating at the Atrium Le 1000 (skating rice is in the middle of the mall).
2) Visit Cafe Olimpico at Mile High.
3) Visit Jean Talon Market on the weekend.
4) There's a casino if you're into gambling.
5) Climb the Clock Tower (it will be cold).
6) Stroll Old town.
7) Have a hot cocoa at many of the cafe.
8) Visit Notre Dame Basilica.
9) Visit Crew Collective cafe (cool cafe in a old bank vault)
10) Visit Tommy cafe at 200 Notre Dame.
11) Poutine at La Banquise.

Good luck.

We did Christmas in Montreal a few years ago, stayed in an Airbnb. Christmas Day we went to the Jewish section for bagels and bread and for, lunch went to the Chinese section for Dim sung. It worked well for us. Other previously mentioned suggestions obviously excellent.

Oh...of course there's the underground mall which unless you really have to, I would skip.

Lived near Montreal and visited many times over those years. HIGHLY recommend going a little further to QUEBEC CITY for Christmas- we did this once and is one of our favorite memories. Very quaint Europeanesque. Smaller, lots of activities, just hit Google. You won't regret it.

The city will be beautiful then, but may be VERY cold and snowy/icy. To give you an idea: in Montreal, one of the most popular winter shoe brands is Olang, famous for boots that feature built-in, swivel out crampons, and are advertised as "comfortable down to minus 30."

Will look at Quebec City for sure.

Maybe the idea of a winter wonderland with snow gently falling and Christmas angels singing will be more like freezing and trying not to fall on the ice. Will consider all options. Moving something sunny up the list! Thanks for the input!

One caution is it is extremely cold in Montreal in winter. We were there during Christmas and I could tell you that it is impossible to go anywhere outside without beanie hat or something similar.
The services were great over there. We went to a lot of places and the list above is excellent. If you have a time, try the underground.
