Warm weather getaway in December

Post by chasingadvice » Fri Oct 19, 2018 5:23 pm

Hello fellow bogleheads,
I am looking for 5-6 day vacation to a warm weather place for me and my family (wife and 2.5 year old son) during Dec 22- Jan 1. We are from San Francisco Bay area and have already explored most of the So Cal too. Also , we have been to Florida ( Miami, Orlando, Key West) and Hawaii (Honolulu, Maui and Kauai). I am a bit wary of Cancun because of ongoing violence and travel advisories.
My budget is around $4000 including airfare and hotel for three of us. We are okay with 3+ star hotel and do not splurge too much on food or drinks.
Any ideas for warm and kid friendly places within US (do not have US passport) will be appreciated. Thanks!

Slim pickings that time of year. Warm weather being limited to Hawaii, Fla, AZ and possibly Tx the Padre Island area. St Pete Beach or Clearwater being on the gulf side is a possible choice, though weather can be iffy.

I always say Hawaii first from the west coast. 5 hours and you are in heaven! Go Big Island perhaps!?

You mentioned concern for Cancun but I would say Cabo generally has a good reputation. Easy non-stops from SF.

Have fun!

Hawk's Cay on Duck Key is real nice and family friendly. Can be pricey that time of year so not sure if it will be within budget. I personally prefer Hawaii over Florida.

What about Palm Springs? Not a ton to do there, but should be nice and toasty and well within budget.

The only places in the continental US warm (I guess that is subjective, but I am taking it to mean beach) at the end of December would be Southern Florida. The beach is even iffy in Miami at the end of December. If you mean any part of the US, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are warm. As others pointed out, that is a very busy travel time due to the holidays. You could take a cruise from Florida. Some leaving the country don't require a passport.

5 hour flight and if you have never been awesome...Christmas will be crowded. I suggest Maui or Kauai

avoid Mexico......

Catalina is NOT warm in December.

I'd look at the Caribbean - St. Croix doesn't require passports.

Why not Costa Rica? I've had two great trips there that were pretty economical, because my sister and I agreed we would prefer non-resort type accommodations, which tend to be cheaper than resorts and you feel like you are actually experiencing the country as opposed to some manicured generic surroundings. We saw sloths!! So cool.

I just booked a 5 day weekend in Scottsdale for my wife and I the week after thanksgiving. Flights are cheap. Hotels are cheapish(but I used chase points-Hyatts in Scottsdale are a steal with chase/hyatt points-(protip-soooooo much cheaper than paying $$$ during spring training). Weather is still 70s and 80s.

More of a Kauai guy myself. Grand Hyatt Kauai-I could die there.

for something different, the Isles of Scilly
https://www.thisisinsider.com/tresco-is ... er=twitter
THE ISLES OF SCILLY, Great Britain — Britain is famous for its rain and grey skies. But off the far southern tip of the mainland, a short flight into the Atlantic Ocean from Land's End, are the Isles of Scilly, a subtropical archipelago of 140 tiny white-sand islands. Only five are inhabited.

The islands have year-round sunny weather, and that gives them a weird, otherworldly vibe: You're in Britain. But it feels like the Caribbean.

The islands also have a dark history of profiting from shipwrecks and suffering attacks by pirates. In the year 1209, the locals captured 112 pirates and beheaded them all a single day.

We visited in October to see what the fuss was about.

OP doesn't have a passport. A lot of these suggestions are moot, but I would advise the OP to get his family passports before you need them in a pinch.

Lot of good suggestions. I'm considering Cabo, US Virgin Islands , St.Croix or Big Island. Scottsdale is a good suggestion too.
Many Thanks !
