Need new email address. Gmail or ???

Post by RudyS » Sat Oct 13, 2018 9:17 pm

Planning to move to a location where my current ISP (Charter) is not available. Thinking of getting a gmail account. But just saw a post by linenfort on another thread about their gmail not always getting received. Do others have that experience? So, is gmail good to use? Many of my friends have it. Better alternatives? Thanks for your inputs.

UPDATE: Pretty much decided to go with gmail. Thanks for all the responses.

I've had gmail for a long time and I do not have a problem with it. However, a friend and I were talking about one of its rather obnoxious recent 'upgrades' which occurred without my realizing how it happened - it now 'suggests' 3 separate responses at the close of the letter sent to me. These suggestions are for my response to the received letter. It's super annoying! My friend says to me "Hey, it's reading my email...'
I have a friend who likes using earthlink for email ..... seems reliable.

Gmail is popular and trendy. Note that if you are hoping for a vanity email, like bowtie@gmail.com, it might not be available. However you might have success with securing an email address with mr, ms, or miss like mrbowtie@gmail.com. Good luck.

Get your own domain name.
You will never need to change.
For example, joe@bowtie.com

Well, you won't have to change it, but you may have to buy email service... or use forwarding, which can be problematic. Gmail used to allow hosting domain names for free, but no longer does. I think Zoho still does but I haven't checked lately. Maybe others will have suggestions.

I like Gmail and the services that go with it Drive (online storage), Sheets (spreadsheets that I use to lookup funds prices and track my portfolio) etc. etc.

I would see no reason why you'd ever need to change your gmail account. I do have a private domain but they aren't free to use with Gmail anymore and configuration can be a bit of work for new private domains. Unless you have a real and defined need, it doesn't seem worth the trouble. Straight normal Gmail is fine.

I would go with microsoft's outlook.com account. With Google, you're the product. With Microsoft, email is the product.

To get anything done you really need a gmail account and an outlook.com account. Which one to use for email is a tough choice. If Microsoft still made Windows Phone, the choice would be easier.

Also, if your contacts also have gmail, you can easily jump into live chat mode with them as well as regular email.

Perhaps, perhaps not. I view Google, Apple and Microsoft as all acceptable but (as of 2016) here are some differences:
One key difference between how Google and Microsoft handle data is that when Google sells off part of their business that contains your data, they will notify you of this before the data is actually transferred to a purchasing company. Microsoft however, will just share the data without specifically notifying you.
Apple and Microsoft outright state they share your data with other companies, without explicitly asking permission. Google’s site states that they also share your data with other companies, but only if you consent to the sharing. In the case of all these companies, personal data refers to your name, email address, home address, credit card number, location history, demographic data, your contacts, and more. Microsoft names some of the partners they share with (Yahoo, Newegg and more), but they state some of their partners aren’t listed. Apple does not list the partners they share data with.
https://decentralize.today/apple-vs-goo ... 022bd452b1

But yes, it also seems true that Microsoft isn't selling your data to advertisers. Was looking for washable suits the other day, and had a relevant ad pop up. So, it doesn't bother me really.

I have Hotmail for like 20 yrs now. I use it for anything I don't care if it gets spammed.

Gmail gets the important stuff.
And it ties in nicely with Google voice.

With free gmail, don't they scan your mail and use it for targeting advertisements to you? If a service is free, you're the product.

For that reason, I don't mind paying $5 plus sales tax per month for G Suite. Plus $15 or so per year for my own domain name, which I also use for my web site anyway so I don't consider that as part of my e-mail expenses. It does take some work to configure because there are settings in both G Suite and your domain provider. It's also good to have a different e-mail address as a backup in case there are billing problems (e.g. bad credit card) which cause your G Suite account or domain name to be suspended.

I assume you don't have an Android phone as an account is necessary to basically do anything useful on an Android phone. I would still probably use Gmail if I didn't have an Android phone. I like their ecosystem and the one login gets you access to everything (Google's Office Suite, Drive, Photos, Contacts, Calendar, etc). Do they read your email and use it for advertising? Sure. Nothing is free.

They really mucked up the latest iteration of gmail, so I'd avoid it for now and go with an alternative. Also avoid Yahoo mail for their numerous hacks on the back end and poor new interface.

I'd take a look at Outlook, which I hear is now free and quite good. And also will agree with iCloud recommendation.

I use Inbox for my Gmail account. I've heard Google is discontinuing it in March 2019 though.

That's what I use. However about once a day I check gmail with a browser as it has no way to say Don't do spam filtering, and what it considers spam is mostly real email.

They recently redid the interface and broke finding folders. It used to be for some unknown reason you had to click on More to see the spam and sent folders, now you have to do that and scroll as well. You can't set it to display all email to no effort see the spam folder as it does not display it with all.

Another vote for outlook.com , it is free and you are much more likely to get a normal sounding email address. I also have a gmail account and use both (well, technically google apps).

I use the free outlook.com email for personal business. Also, keep in mind that you can forward either address to the one you choose which allows you to use only one login most of the time. Personally, I use 5 addresses directed to one (work, google apps, outlook, old msn, old school).

You can’t go wrong with Gmail however if privacy is a major concern I second ProtonMail. ProtonMail’s data centers are based in Switzerland, and Swiss privacy law is considered among the strongest in the world.

GREAT web interface, custom domain name support, calendar and contacts which I can sync with phones/tablets or any other IMAP clients.

I believe you can still host your domain for free, but a significant change recently is you can no longer use POP/IMAP/SMTP. So, web access only. I don't know if older accounts were grandfathered, as with free gmail domain hosting.

Rudy, for what it’s worth, if you had asked a couple of weeks ago I’d also be recommending gmail. I’ve been using it forever, love the documents and spreadsheets, too. I did give up on their Calendar, but that’s for another thread.

I like using filters in gmail to organize, whitelist and block or hide away mail.

I like the way gmail has always stored conversations as threads when the subject title remains unchanged. Now Yahoo and others have copied it, but they didn’t always. (Avoid Yahoo).

As distressing as this recent experience of missing sent emails is, I think I’m well in the minority; it may never happen to you. I’ve started sending important mail from another service, but I’ve got maybe 13 years of mail in gmail.

Know that your emails are forever, even the deleted ones. Still, your friends already have gmail, so it may not matter.

I used to have fastmail.fm once upon a time. They deleted my account after I left it alone for too long. I’d been spending all my email time at gmail.

For financial accounts, I use only gmail secured with yubikey, backups of authenticator and printed codes with no phone number attached.

One more thing: gmail now lets you send restricted emails.
I don’t think they’re encrypted, but you can send set an expiration date and prevent them from being forwarded.

Handy. Now if my mail would just make it to the recipient. :)

While our privacy is increasingly at risk, one needs to understand what goes on today with GMail. None of your emails are private, Google not only scans your emails for data but lets 3rd parties do the same. So when you type in that email you're sending, realize that machines are reading that and selling access to it.

I own my own domain, and use my own email address. Maybe it's not more secure, but it sure feels like it is.

Isn't using Thunderbird for Gmail just adding another layer of complexity? I can just log onto Gmail with any browser, from anywhere. What benefit does Thunderbird (or any computer-resident email program) add?

Protonmail is a secure, web-based email service. https://protonmail.com/

As easy to use as Gmail. A basic account is free.

You can copy mail to local mail folders on your computer for offline archiving, and then delete it from the Gmail account.

I did this when I retired from the college where I had worked for many years. It uses an enterprise edition of Gmail, Google Docs, etc. for faculty, staff and students. I wasn't sure I would be able to keep that account after retiring, so I saved all my archived mail on my home computer, and deleted it from the account, to be safe. It turned out that I still have that account as emeritus faculty, so that step wasn't actually necessary.

I wasn't sure I would be able to keep that account after retiring, so I saved all my archived mail on my home computer, and deleted it from the account, to be safe. It turned out that I still have that account as emeritus faculty, so that step wasn't actually necessary.
You employer is likely to have to retain your email for compliance reasons, but isn't obligated to give you access to it. That policy is probably subject to change at the whim of whoever is in charge at the moment, so if you did actually want the email you were wise to download it as you did. However you could also have simply transferred your academic Gmail directly to a personal Gmail account. Of course academic accounts have unlimited storage and personal accounts don't, so you might have to fork over some money for additional capacity.

If you value your privacy, you should not use gmail.

outlook.com is a decent option.

How much does Zoho charge?
It is free for individuals and for companies up to 3 users; it has never cost me a cent. For larger groups there are 2 different plans either $12/month or $25/month per user.
I will add that it is a full featured email, nicely laid out and organized.

I am a long time Outlook user and much prefer it over Gmail although I do have Gmail account too. I really like the archive and search capabilities of Outlook. I have not found Gmail to have comparable capability although my knowledge of that product is more limited.

The problem is that most everyone else that you correspond with uses gmail. So regardless of which email provider you use your conversation is still exposed to Google.
De gustibus non est disputandum.
