Grand Canyon (LV) - is $80 ticket price for Sky Walk worth it

Post by FB01 » Wed Oct 10, 2018 9:24 am

Hello,

Not sure which Rim to go but is the West Rim where the Sky walk is worth it? The price is $80 per person and then only you can walk on it.

If not the West Rim, which should be the best rim to go for Grand Canyon view?

Thanks,
JR

how about spend the $80 on one of the cheaper hotels on the Rim and actually hike the canyon or part of it. They have rest stops about every 1.5 miles of hiking.

I have never been to the North Rim or "West Rim," but we've gone to the South Rim a bunch of times over the years, and it's always great.

Amazing views on both the South Kaibab Trail and the Bright Angel Trail. It is well worth hiking down a bit to get away from the crowds and get a different perspective.

I am looking forward to our next Grand Canyon trip, whenever that will be, but I would not be interested in the Sky Walk. It might be well worth it to others.

Depends on what kind of a visitor you are. If you look at the Canyon and go, the sky walk will be OK. If you need a snapshot, I read you can't take cameras on the skywalk.

The north rim is open until Oct 31 and it's cheaper. The south rim is always open and there are services there.

(I live nearby and I have never been to the skywalk, have no desire to go.)

If you have acrophila, then yes! The Skywalk is a great experience. For fellow high-places junkies, I would also recommend the helicopter ride going over the Rim and through the Canyon. Of course, that's another $200/person, but it is truly delightful.

If you'd just like to look (perhaps from behind some nice solid rock walls) try the free South Rim shuttle, "Kaibab Rim Route." Each stop is beautiful and educational, with hikes and hikelets.

I live nearby (in the winter). The "west rim" - actually the Hualapai reservation section of the southern rim - is the only practical destination by car or bus from Las Vegas if you plan to leave in the morning and return in the evening. My understanding of things at the Hualapai west rim is that views into the canyon are only available to paying tourists who opt either for the Skywalk or the helicopter tour.
I visited the west rim many times before the Skywalk was up and running and enjoyed the freedom of being able to park along the rim pretty much wherever I wanted. That was after paying the day-use fee. Now that the Skywalk is operational I understand that self guided tours of the rim are no longer permitted. Parking is at the Visitor Center from where you can get a ticket for the Skywalk, if you already don't have one. You are then escorted (by mini-bus I believe) to the Skywalk. There you are instructed on its use and required to stash your photographic equipment. (There may be a locker rental fee involved in this.) More up to date information may be available on the internet, including YouTube videos of people who have experienced the Skywalk.
The helicopter tour typically involves a meal down in the canyon. The helicopter is a shuttle to get you there and back. It doesn't tour the west rim extensively. The Grand Canyon on the opposite (north) side of the Colorado river at the Hualapai site is part of the National Park. Access to that part is by way of the North Rim/Parashant. This is very long trip by surface from Las Vegas.
The most direct road route (US 93 and Dolan Springs) will take you through a scenic Joshua Tree forest. However, this road may be poorly maintained or even washed out depending on your luck. Make sure you have a 4W drive vehicle before undertaking it, and high clearance is recommended. A more roundabout way to the West rim is available from US 93 and Route 66 east of Kingman. This is a well maintained road. If you fly into the Hualapai visitor center you avoid this issue of course.
One last thing: The Colorado river is not visible from any of the South rim* vehicle turnouts. It is visible from various points on the North rim. The vehicle access road to the West rim visitor center has views of the north rim of the canyon. However, you will not see into the canyon unless you pay for one of the tours already described.

*The Colorado river is visible from Desert View. However, it's a view of the river before it enters the canyon.

I think the whole place is a rip off. I would avoid it.

North Rim is actually quite nice and peaceful. Especially this time of year (after the lodge closes).

If you have time, and are fit, I'd just hike down one of the rims a bit.

South rim is busy and touristy but you get the classic views. Hiking a mile down South Kabab trail will get you away from most of the people. North rim is more peaceful and the trail down to Manzanita rest area is beautiful but you do not get the classic views of the canyon, however, this is my preference. You can hike rim to rim in about 12 hours but need to be fit. Shuttles are available to get you back to your vehicle.

just take free walk along the rim, or hiking down. It's included in your park ticket.

I went to the skywalk a few years ago. It was definitely not worth it. The view wasn't nearly as great as advertised, it was very expensive per person, they didn't allow cameras, and after about 15 mins of standing there we just shrugged and left. And that was traveling from Las Vegas, so it was about four hours in each direction (I do think they've gotten better access roads since then, so may be quicker now).

That said, I do love the Grand Canyon. I just don't think the skywalk is worth it. Consider a helicopter tour, which I've done and found pretty amazing.

Thank you all.

Based on the response, Skywalk is out of question now. As I am planning to go in Nov/Dec, North Rim is closed in October to my only option is South rim which people have mentioned also gives better views

Sounds like this may be your first time at the Grand Canyon, you should go to the south rim as it has the most facilities, plenty of trails, and great views. My only other suggestion is to check the weather before you go, it can get surprisingly cold in the winter. I went camping at the south rim in the second half of December, the lows were in the mid-teens, highs were in the upper twenties.

I am going to the North Rim in November and December, so it is not really closed. Of course, I do have to backpack starting from the South Rim to get there. :)

And I have to also hike back.

I will be travelling with kids so no plan of hiking. Just drive around to get some views. But great point to get some warm clothes as it might become chilly
