Got my new Iphone Xs

Post by mrgeeze » Thu Sep 27, 2018 4:29 pm

Man, what a computer!!
Phone work's great also.

My previous phone was an Apple 4s.
I'm not a person who upgrades very often.

But this is some phone.

I spent about $1300 for a totally tricked out (512GB) model
I run a variety of apps that are processor and storage intensive.

I dig the face id, the gestures and the processing power.

Every five years or so.... Its a great feeling

Agreed, it's a nice phone. I just upgraded to the XS from a 5...like you I keep phones for as long as possible. I didn't think my iPhone 5 would seem as antiquated as it does in comparison. I'm most surprised at how different the XS feels and how quickly it operates. :sharebeer

I went to the very crowded Apple store last Sunday and I liked that iPhone also. The screen quality is terrific and it sure is fast. I liked the new watch too.

Still thinking of returning mine..

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ip ... s.2142500/

I have had some serious issues trying to download content on Wifi. Taking forever, and the signal isn't as strong. I can take our 2017 iPad and download an HD movie in about 6 minutes. On the same connection I can download the same movie to the iPhone over several hours.

I have been escalated to a senior advisor by Apple, but there are tons of people having these issues.

I got the Xs max for my wife and I. Great phone indeed.

however, I really don't see the difference between OLED and lcd screen. Therefore, I recommend frugal bogleheads to buy the Xr version coming out next month in October for only $750 instead of Xs $1000. Save yourself $250.

I have a max coming today and will be interested to see the difference from my 6s. I was recently reading that some folks with the new Xs phones are complaining about how long it takes to charge the phone up to 100%. Have you noticed an increase in charging time? I think some people were reporting that it was something like 3 hours and 20 minutes for the max to go from basically 0 to 100%.

It is capable of faster charging but they want you to buy the fast charger separately for like $74. If you have an ipad that charger will charge the iphone faster too but not quite as fast as the dedicated fast charger.

326+ pixel density is PATHETICALLY low for a phone. For example, my LG G4 made in 2015 has 520+ ppi. I recommend buying the XR if your eyes is bad. XR has LCD screen so if you tilt your phone at an angle the color is off immediately and it doesn't have the true black.

There is no increase in charge time--there is increase in battery capacity so it will take longer to fill up with the same speed charger. I agree it’s stupid to ship the phone with a 5W charger, but this way they can add it in next year and raise the price of the phone.

?? Have you tried playing any HDR content? I have an X which is also OLED, and the difference is pretty noticeable.

Lol I really cannot reconcile these two statements. I didn't even know there were still functioning 4 series iPhones out there. Was that even getting iOS updates? I thought the X was amazing coming from a 6. I can't imagine what it's like coming from a 4S...you didn't even have LTE!

I removed several off-topic posts and comments which derailed the discussion into an OS war (Apple vs. Android). OS wars are off-topic.

Please stay focused on discussing the iPhone XS. Positive or negative opinions are welcome, but they should be stated in a civil, factual manner.

I understand the confusion.
How do i run anything at all on a 4s?
Truth is , I did not.
It was about 2-3 digits behind in the os\
pretty much a phone, email, text and browser.
all very slow

I own a 1 year ipad pro i run current apps on
most of it is either music based, navigation and/or cartography.
a couple of homegrown apps I wrote myself.

Now I can run them on the iphone.

Wanna buy a tricked out ipad pro?

Ah that definitely clears it up, and I can see how the XS would take the place of your iPad. I got the XS Max, and frankly, I'm wondering whether I'll ever buy another personal laptop again. There isn't much that I do at home that my iPhone can't do...often more easily than on the laptop if there is an app.

It's funny how anecdotes somehow become facts. I haven't experienced a charging issue, wifi issue, yellow screen issue, signal issue, etc. I imagine most purchasers have not.

I've seen the videos. I don't doubt that some users have the issue. Seems like a simple fix to me...wake up your phone before or after plugging it in. Or use a wireless charger, like I do. Do people really not verify that their phone is charging before they go to bed? I always make sure I get the charging graphic/sound. Regardless, I'm sure a software update is coming to fix this minor issue.

I got a Low end 64 GB XS Max. I replaced my iPhone 6. Night and day.....I really, really, like this phone. I will have it for 3 years like I held on to the iPhone 6. No regrets. Streamed all day. Used it like crazy...about 15 hours and I have about 20 percent batter. Screen is amazing. Good work apple.

It's funny my comment got deleted because I said you need to buy fast charger for $75 where literally any other phone on the market comes with a fast charger for free. That's iPhone for you. That's a fact.

however, I really don't see the difference between OLED and lcd screen. Therefore, I recommend frugal bogleheads to buy the Xr version coming out next month in October for only $750 instead of Xs $1000. Save yourself $250.

I am not (particularly) old and have 20/20 vision. The higher resolution of the Xs compared to the Xr is not a purchase driver for me. I think telling Bogleblits that "I'm assuming you are probably old, and can't tell the difference" is pretty jerky.

True 42 isn't too old, but at that PPI you can see indiv pixels which shouldn't really happen in 2018.

To plenty of people, all these technical distinctions tend to be meaningless in real life. Even the independent reviewers, who highlight all the technical differences, have previously fairly uniformly stated that last year's LCD iphone 8+ compared quite well to the OLED iphone X.

I also wouldn't get too carried away with pixel density. The 10.5" ipad pro has a pixel density of 264 ppi, but continues to win plenty of praise from all the independent reviewers for the quality of its screen.

The bottom line is that there are plenty of competing smartphones out there from different manufacturers. So, if you don't find the new iphones to be the right fit for you, there are plenty of excellent alternatives out there. People's assessments and priorities are all different, so I don't entirely get the point of arguing about these highly subjective decisions.

XR has a pixel density of non HD screen at 326 ppi (less than 1080p), the same pixel density of that of an iPhone 4 made in 2010. I'm assuming you are probably old, and can't tell the difference... Any computer and TV made nowadays has a better resolution than iPhone XR. Apple is just trying to pull a fast one on you.

Correct, 326 ppi is less than 1080p display, so it's worse than your standard 2008 TV. You don't have to care about the specs, and you might not even notice a difference but plenty of people do however... Yes, that article is posted in 2016. It's still relevant to this day. Again, pretty sad coming from a $750 phone.

I purchased my first iPhone the Xs six days ago and love it. The one complaint I have is ringtone options.

Good grief! What do you add to the discourse? It’s a bit like the broken records on Tesla.

I'm ready to retire my iphone 6s after four years, storage capacity almost exhausted. Visited the Apple store this past weekend and I must say the Xs is indeed "night and day" as someone above mentioned compared to the 6s. I just wished they had the Xr available on hand to see the difference(s). I know it will be available October 26 and, yes, I will wait until then to make a decision which one to get. I understand the Xs has OLED screen, which I just loved, and Xr is LCD. The screen definition and camera are important to me and I'll just wait to see what the difference(s) will be when the XR is launched. Others mentioned there's not much but I want to see it with my own eyes.

From a price point, the Xr is very attractive (w/ 128GB for $799) vs Xs (64GB for $999).

It is a great phone when compared to something 4 years old and I agree there is no difference in the OLED vs. LCD screen for normal use. In my google cardboard, I can definitely see the difference with the OLED screen vs. my old iphone 7. I only use the VR apps once a week or so, so not much of a problem for me if it were still LCD.

In fact, I find the iPhone XS to be a waste of money for the very limited improvement over my iphone 7 (even the camera is worse than the YEAR OLD pixel). I got mine two weeks ago from tmobile. Can I still return it and exchange it for a Galaxy/Pixel?

I currently have an Iphone 6S Plus. It's still working OK, it's just that the limited 16Gb of space is way too little for me now. Between all the new apps and high res photos and videos, I feel like I'm always running out of memory. In fact, I haven't had enough available memory to install the last two ios updates.

I'm looking forward to finally upgrading to a new XS. Just waiting to confirm that the "chargegate" fixes have worked.

Start using google photos (you can install it at ios device) and clean your temporary files. Use their "FREE UP SPACE" feature. You won't have a problem with storage.

Same here, I'm waiting for the Xr to decide.

For reference, the iPad 3 famously came out with a retina display but used the same CPU with a slightly better graphics chip than an iPad 2. There's no question the iPad 3 has a much better display but at the cost of system performance. It was noticeably slower than an iPad 2 having to move 4x's as many pixels. So much so that the iPad 4 was released only 9 months after the 3 was released bucking the trend of yearly updates. Every iOS update magnified the speed differential. My iPad 2 was barely useable on the last iOS 9 update. My sister's iPad 3 was not useable to me even though it looked better.

The Xr and Xs has the same CPU. The Xs has 4 GB ram and the Xr is supposed to have only 3 gb. Will 1 extra gb make up the difference of having to move double the number number of pixels in the Xs vs Xr? I'll wait and see.

Very few humans can see better than 326 ppi at the distance they hold a phone, young or old. Higher pixel count is for bragging rights and nothing else. I have an LG G6 with 1440p 565 ppi display that allows you to lower the resolution of videos to save battery life and consume less data. I turn it on because I cannot see better than 326 ppi.

XS Max does remind one as another poster put it “being back home”... Screen is brilliant. Videos look amazing. Sound is very good also.

Charger issues have been reportedly resolved in the beta iOS 12.1. Basically the issue is that some devices may not recognize a charger engagement when the phone is in sleep mode. In any mode other than sleep, there are no charger issues.

16GB is ok if you don't store videos/photos.

My temp files was large, it could go up as much as 8-10GB in 4 months, I clean up once every other month, my phone is smooth as butter as long I as don't let storage gets full.

The part I bolded is not true. Your previous sentence may or may not be true (I did not look up exact human eye specs) at normal phone distance. But the higher pixel count on a phone DOES make a difference when using your phone as a VR player. I have noticed the difference myself. So it more than just bragging rights.

My mistake. There is an application where higher pixel count matters: VR. Agreed, there is a huge difference in VR when using my iPhone 8 and my LG G6. The latter being much clearer.

326p is less than 1080p TV HD. I can always tell when I see this in real life, especially something I hold so close to my eye. 1080p display is my minimum specs. Less than that looks a bit grainy to me.

If you can't see a difference between HD and non HD screen, you have a bad eyes, just buy the XR. It's a win win for your budget and you can't tell a difference anyway.

If you hold the phone 18" away, which is the way that most people hold it, a person with a 20/20 vision on the Snellen chart will be unable to distinguish details beyond about 300 pixels per inch. The only way to see the pixels is by holding the phone closer than 18" away or by having better than 20/20 vision. This is a matter of science, not opinion, and the math is out there for you to review.

Further, there's a lot more to the overall screen quality than its resolution. There are plenty of phones with higher resolution displays that are widely regarded as having inferior overall screens.

Which is why some of us have spent a lot of money on OLED for our homes. OLED is all about the color and especially, the black. Does it matter as much on a phone as on a large screen, no, but it's a nice-to-have.
