I would cut it super short (0 level) with hair clippers to try out. I did the same (preemptive move) and have not gone back. Still use zero level hair clippers so not shaving yet.
Yes, #0 or even #1 blade guards give you most of the advantages of a total shave with a little less maintenance because you have a short stubble and not a clean shave and can skip a few days if you want.

A 1/16" one way or the other makes a big difference when it's that short.

Try it, your hair will grow back. Maybe sooner than you want :D

I have been considering it now and then, but the fear or social stigma especially in the work place is keeping me away from doing it. Not to speak of unspeakable horrors at home from my spouse and kids. But, I want to feel free sometimes of the hair, and at least for once try it. Has anyone else tried it, and if so, how did you navigate the social and professional settings.
I work in a professional mega Corp engineering office. I’ve never felt bad about showing up with a colored Mohawk, colored hair, just a Mohawk, etc. on a Monday morning at the office. Turns a lot of heads because I’m the only one in that environment, where I’ve worked, that I’ve seen do it. I like to change things up and keep folks curious!!!

I didn't mean stigma in a very strong sense, just others getting used to the new look. I want to try it, but afraid to pull it off.
Do you have good eyebrows? The bald look works better on guys with heavier eyebrows.

Or a beard to off-set the shaved head can be useful too.

I know at least 4 guys in my office who shave and it works for all of them. It wouldn't work for me because my eyebrows are light-colored and barely there.

instead of bald, what about buzzing it on a low number?

or what about just growing out your hair?

Both are easy and lazy

When someone considers going bald even without them saying so, I know 95% of the time they can't grow their hair. Male pattern baldness... (unless you have some psychotic breakdown like Britney or Katy Perry :D). They probably already have some form of thinning everywhere/at the crown or receding at the temples/front badly. So, option 2 isn't really an option.

O.K. I did this and stuck with it for about 5 years. My wife hated it the entire time but most people just got used to seeing me like that. Having said that, it was more work to keep it shaved then just getting a haircut every 4 to 6 weeks. Also, you really have to have the look to carry it off. Looking at pictures now, I cringe because I don't think I looked good with it. Some loved it though, so who knows.

I do this, at least 6 months a year.

I know several guys who have a full head of hair that prefer the bald look. The last decade the bald look has been a thing with many guys who have hair, I know kids in their 20s and guys in their 50s that like the look even though they can grow hair. I was one of them. The main thing is you have to have the right head shape for it. I also think a bigger guy looks better bald then a thin frail guy. If he is thin he has to be fit or else he looks sickly. This is my opinion of course.

This is how started. I started buzzing my head then I went with a real short almost bald look, which was my favorite out of all the looks and finally, I went with the razor and shaving cream look. That one didn't look so hot on me. Many bald guys want to get it as shiny as possible, I personally liked the shadow look. I also didn't like the buzz because after a few days I looked like a Chia-Pet.

Been doing a short buzz cut for about 5 yrs now.

Simple and saves money
+1

1/4" all over buzz here. Been using the same pair of Wahl clippers for probably close to 20 years now.

I compromise with a short all-over cut, I just go in once a month and pay a barber $10 to do a #1 blade cut. No head shaving hassles or nistakes, no chrome-dome self-consciousness, $10 a month. Twenty years in the military gave me an appreciation for short hair, so when it touches my ears or gets shaggy I can’t stand it.
