vacation in the Ozarks

Post by wije » Sun Sep 23, 2018 10:37 am

We're currently in the Kansas City area and have never been to the Ozarks. We'd like to see them from Oct 5-8th to catch their autumn glory. Any suggested itinerary would be welcome.

While there will be some color then, you will be a bit early for this year's peak. Actually, there are typically 2 peaks.

There are several references if you Google; here's one: http://www.ozarkmtns.com/foliage/peak.asp

There’s a beautiful drive along the Missouri River bluffs. We live in MO & did that a few years ago. Went south/east along River from I-70 sout/east of Rocheport down to Jefferson City.

From Jeff City you can go through lots more hills to the Ozarks. If you go to Arkansas, check out the Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Beautiful lodge on mountain top.

You will be early for peak color and the drought will probably diminish the color this year. We have a lot of trees that have been dropping brown leaves for a couple of months already and a bit of color is starting to show on the early stuff. Pick about any road that is not an interstate and just drive. You will see trees.

If you're going through Arkansas, there's Eureka Springs as mentioned above. If you like art museums / curated outdoors trails and exhibits, stop by Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville. That Walton family money went into something, that's for sure.

And if you want a break from nature to watch a blowout football game, Alabama is up in Fayetteville on the 6th.

Ozark's are great, but if you haven't been to Table Rock, it is much more pristine since development was strictly controlled by the Corps of Engineers. The owner of Bass Pro has contributed millions to the area and you should see the Top of the Rock and the Dogwood Canyon Nature Preserve. Branson is right on the lake but it can be avoided without much effort.

Just finished watching the 2 seasons of Ozark. Similar to Breaking Bad. Hope there's a third season.

The Boston Mountains in NW Arkansas are a popular autumn drive.

There's a fairly easy hike with beautiful springs at Ha Ha Tonka State Park. If you have nice weather it could be fun to rent a boat if you know how to drive or take a tour on the Celebration. http://cruiselakeoftheozarks.com/ October is also a great time to play golf and hit up Spa Shiki for the day.
