2005 honda accord door problems

the right rear door of my 2005 Accord can only be opened from the outside. i asked a mechanic for a quote to repair. he told me he wouldn't know how much the repair cost would be until he takes it apart. ( i vaguely remember he would charge $100-$150 to takes apart the door).

that was almost a year ago. now i started to have a couple of new problems with the doors. now the key fob doesn't work. when i click the button on the key, i can hear the doors are trying to do something, but it doesn't unlock. another new issue is the driver side of the window doesn't open.

anyone here has an old Accord with similar issues? if so, what needs to be replaced/fixed and what is a reasonable cost?

i am not sure if i want to take it to the mechanic and pay a $100 diagnostic fee, just to find out it will cost $500 or more to repair it.

thank you in advance!

You should include that you already checked the child lock is released on the rear door so people like me won't ask you if you did. :P

Go on YouTube you will find diy videos on how repair door locking and opening issues. I did the fix for $30 vs. a quote from a mechanic for $400. It is not a nooob job though, you have to be comfortable with tools and tearing stuff apart. Most of the time it is the unit that has a motor to actuate the door lock mechanism.

The first door took me 45 minutes, the second, 30! Experience helps :beer

Your car sounds a bit like my 2002 Honda CR-V.

A couple of years ago the key fob quit working - actually sort of quit working. If the driver's door is locked, pressing lock on the key fob will lock the other doors. If the driver's door is unlocked, pressing the key fob will unlock the other doors. The driver's door already has to be what you want the other doors to be. I opted to just start using the key to lock & unlock - like we all did many years ago. (Unfortunately over the last 6 months, the key isn't working very well, so will be purchasing a new door lock for the driver's door.)

Then about a year ago the passenger window quit working. It is in the up position (luckily) but will not go down using either the driver's side or passenger side button. The passenger window isn't a deal breaker. The driver's side window is a deal breaker for me. It must work.

I sold a ford windstar after my son had a policeman pull a gun on him at a traffic stop after my son opened the door since window didn’t work. Some things really need to work.

Try replacing the battery in the key fob. That could work.

Likely, your door lock actuators need replacing.

Your right rear door handle does not work.

The window motor could be worn out.

Older cars require maintnece. Learn how to fix it or find a reasonably priced mechanic who can. Fix as soon as it becomes an issue. Don’t let them build up and lead to other issues.

Or buy a new car every ten years.

bottlecap, thanks for the reply. it is helpful. i looked up "window motor replacement cost". now i have an better idea about the cost. i didn't know that's what it is called. yes i agree the actuators probably needs to be replaced. the battery in my key fob is new and seems fine.

Can you open it with a key? Can you deal with not having ability to unlock door with key fob?

I had the door lock actuator issue on my old 05 accord at about 7 years old, was something like 125-150 all in to replace.

Never had the window or non opening door things though. That was a great car, got it to 230k miles and 12 years with nothing but the door lock thing, oil, tires, air filters and brakes.

One way or the other you need to get this fixed. If you were in an accident then a passenger in the back seat could not get out.

Watching a youtube video on how to do this is a good suggestion. Even if you decide not to do this yourself you will have a better idea what a fair price is to fix it.

You should be able to find Honda specific forums where this has likely already been discussed.

How many miles are on the car?

If it has high miles then 14 years is not a bad run for a car if you are not able to do a lot of the car repairs yourself.

It it otherwise runs ok then you may be able to sell it for a modest amount to someone that can do the car repairs themself.

Try posting in a honda accord forum and not a financial forum, your yield will be higher.

I had to replace a couple of door lock actuators on my Acura TSX (first generation, which was just a European Accord) multiple times. That's very likely one of your problems. Between $200-300 to replace it around here, and I guarantee you it'll break again after breaking once. Time to start thinking about replacing that car.

This is a common Honda issue for cars with auto lock. It is the door actuator mentioned above. Honda uses a plastic part that breaks over time. Costs about $180 to replace. At some point it will go on all your doors and hatch (for SUVs).

They continue to replace with the same plastic part so over time will fail again.
