Best consumer products - made in USA

Post by gac1979 » Tue Aug 14, 2018 8:00 pm

There are a number of threads about the Bogleheads favorite consumer products (i.e. Apple, Bose, Patagonia etc). However, does anybody have particular favorites that are still mostly manufactured in the USA? A few I can think of are Stihl lawn products, Allen Edmonds shoes, and Toyota vehicles. What are some other good ones?

Toyota vehicles? They're world sourced. In that case, add Boeing airplanes to the list.

Some items necessarily are made in the USA like bourbon and Tennessee whiskey.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_w ... quirements

I think Deere and Caterpillar are still mostly made in the USA. And there are plenty of drugs, plastics, and chemicals that are made here.

And do you count financial services and intellectual property? Many movies and video games are made in the USA for internal consumption as well as export.

These are some tough jeans that will last for many years. Made from Texas grown cotton and made in TX also. They also make some nice leather gloves. http://madeinusaforever.com/orradumainus.html
This web site has all American made products too. I buy whatever I can from here.

Personally I don't care where products I buy are manufactured or where the company is headquartered. I also do not consider the politics of the company or its ownership in my buying decision. I believe in purchasing the best value products available regardless of where they are made.

Then this is an entirely political post from the outset.

How (and, worse, why) is this actionable? How long until this comes around to Harleys? :D

Schwin, along with Cannondale, is indeed owned by Dorel. Cannondale once upon a time made their aluminum frames in Pennsylvania. Almost no complete bike is "Made in the U.S.A.," as the components are made in Malaysia (Shimano), Taiwan (Sram), or maybe Italy (some Campagnolo). A lot of titanium framesets are still made in the U.S., however (e.g. Moots, Independent Fabrication, Eriksen, etc.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Southwick suits (which supplies quite a bit of Brook Brothers' offerings) are made in the U.S., as are some BB shirts. Most of Allen Edmonds and almost all Aldens are made in the U.S. Filson is also almost all made in the U.S.

A desire to know the source of a product is apolitical. Certainly being a fully informed consumer is actionable.

Final assembly is very low value add.
Most of the value add in Apple is in product design and development, and that is made in the USA.

On the other hand, there are a lot of products that say, "Made in the USA", but you realize that only the final assembly is made in the USA.

+1 on Darn Tough Socks. I just found them recently, they have zoomed to the top of my sock shopping list :-)

Being from Ohio, I also vote for Honda, simply because I know my family has directly benefited from the economic boost it gave to the entire state when they created the eco-system around the Marysville Plant.

Folks already mentioned Ruger and S&W. My favorite USA firearms company is Hornady. A true home-grown, entrepreneurial, quality and innovative company as you will every find.

Kind of contradicted yourself there. Apple may be designed in the US, but its manufactured in the far east. By this logic, your "assembled in South Carolina" BMW is German... unless you know for sure its one of the models designed at a USA engineering center.

Similarly somebody up thread mention Stihl... its a German brand, though they may have plants here.

Some Honda's and Toyota's are more "American" than ford as they have both assembly plants and engineering for USA market models here - but as was pointed out the parts sourcing is global.

....

Thinking of things I have around the house that are American made:

Garage/lawn-
Weber grill
Ariens snowblower
Mantis tiller - USA made but Honda sourced engine
Ingersoll Rand Air compressor (USA assembly, USA made tank, the pump unit is an imported part)
Some hand tools that used to be, but are no longer USA made (Stanley and Craftsman)
I'd have to check but my Honda lawnmower is probably USA assembled, but likely has import parts
Honda Pilot - Ohio assembled from USA and imported parts
I think my Toyota pickup was USA engineered, but they are assembled in Mexico now.

Kitchen-
Lodge cast iron pans
All clad pans

household-
McIntosh HiFi components - they where owned by overseas companies for a while but have now come back to New York State.
Conrad Johnson audio components.
A couple different brands of USA made Hifi speakers (NHT, etc)
Ethan Allen and Bassett furniture
