Marriott Free Certificate

Post by SlowMovingInvestor » Mon Aug 13, 2018 1:20 am

I have a Marriott Free Night Certificate (upto Cat 5) from a Marriott Rewards card.

I'm planning to do a booking and I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense to wait till August 18th to do the booking. From what I understand, old free Night certificates are converted to points, but the categories also change, so it's not entirely clear to me whether it's worth waiting or not, or whether it depends on what the new categories the hotels fall into post August 18th ?

Also, would I be able to book a Starwood Hotel with the free certificate post August 18th ?

I'm a little bit of a novice with hotel points, I'm afraid.

If you have a Category 1-5 Marriott property in mind I'd book in now. You can always cancel with 72 hours of arrival and get the certificate back.

If your stay is after 8/21 you can effectively redo your redemption without penalty based on info available on 8/18.

Is this 72 hr for all hotels, or does it depend on the specific property involved ?

Call the number on back of card, they will answer any questions. Harder and harder to find <5 locations.

I believe this is Marriott's policy across the board whether you are doing a reward redemption or have a cancelable cash rate. The cancelation policy will be displayed to you before you complete a reservation.

In the US the policy is 48 hours (not 72) but always good to check this before booking in case there is an exception at the property or something changed.

Correct... 48, not 72. Sorry.

You can see what category all hotels will be in after the merger.

I haven't seen anything to indicate old certificates will be converted to points

But you can't use a Free Cert in Starwood hotels until after Aug 18th, right ?

Your cert should convert to a new cat 1-5 certificate, which is up to 35,000 points and will include a lot more hotels, including in places like NYC that were previously out of reach for the cert.

I would absolutely wait.

I'm a little confused -- I thought it was converting to cat 1-4 cert ?

Also, I need to stay before Sep 18th. I gather no booking with free certs will be allowed Aug 18 - Sep 18 ?
