Root-friendly flagships equal to Galaxy S7

Post by get_g0ing » Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:56 pm

Hi,

What would be some Android flagship phones equivalent to Galaxy S7 (in price and specs) that are root friendly, or can be rooted without looking some functionality.

Samsung phones if they are rooted trip something called KNOX which disables Samsung Pay and Secure Folder. I'm looking for a Galaxy S7 equivalent Android phone which is root-friendly (unlike the Samsung phones).

Thanks.

Have you looked at the Huawei Honor Line? Huawei is typically highly regarded as far as bang for the buck and I have seen a bunch of rooted models in the hands of the IT guys here. The 7X is cheaper than an S7. You can probably get a 10 for close to the same price as a new S7.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are great phones and can be rooted.

What are you looking for from root and price range? Google Pay checks the bootloader, so you'll have to use something like Magisks or some other root hider. One Plus 5 seems to have had good luck. Honestly though, I haven't had to root this generation or previous due to launcher's and better manufacturer support.

Not sure why you want to root. Maybe one of these would do the trick?

I had a flagship Samsung for a while, but hated that the security updates were delayed and also that the carrier had loaded the phone with bloatware.

Bought an Android One phone and it's been a joy. Google Fi service. Zero bloatware. Immediate Android updates.

I have not looked at Huawei Honor, but I have heard of Huawei Mate but wasn't sure how root-friendly it was.

I know these days root is not that necessary but I still want to have it. Price range for me is $300 (either new, mint or used-excellent condition).
You look to be knowledgeable on this, any suggestion for a phone which will retain Google Play function after root?

Online I am also seeing discussions around "SafetyNet", I'm not sure what impact that has.

Have you taken a look at Essential phone? Stock Android and updates are on par with google (Android Pie is out already). It seems to be root friendly too. The company is in financial trouble, but that also means you can get the phone on fire sale price.

Here is a good place to start, from the folks that develop the root process....

In searching online I'm coming across that Google Pixel and Huawei Mate 9 are good phones for rooting.

Do you know which of these two phones could still use Google Pay after rooting on Android 8.0 (Oreo) firmware?

OnePlus phones fill this niche quite well. The manufacturer doesn't discourage rooting, doing so doesn't void the warranty, and there is a strong community of technical users. The phones also offer a good price/performance ratio in a world where many Android phones are approaching or exceeding $1k.

I can highly recommend the Moto G5 Plus, as the bootloader can be easily unlocked, and the phone can be rooted. Not sure if the new Moto G6 is equally easy to root. Make sure you buy the universal version, not the Verizon version, as that one has locked bootloader.

The G5 Plus is a very nice phone, and is cheap! (Under $250)

The US version of the G6 doesn't do NFC, so no Google Pay, which defeats one of OP's apparent goals.

Regarding Pixel (XL)

usual disclaimer with root: Perform at your own risk, etc, etc.
