Coldness Pismo beach water

Post by FB01 »

Hi,

We are planning to go Pismo Beach and temperature is around 73/74. However, is the beach water that cold similar to San Francisco or much warmer.

SFO water beaches are always cold but wanted to compare Pismo beach with SFO water. Can anyone give any insight who has been to both beaches?

The water at Pismo is always cold.

California ocean water doesn’t really warm up much until you get south of Santa Barbara or even south of Point Dume (Malibu). The California current brings cold water down from Alaska.

Lots of places there rent wetsuits for a reasonable price. Very worthwhile if you are planning to spend much time in the water.

This is just for kids aged 8 and 5. Wanted to see what else can be done at Pismo beach if water turned our to be too cold.

The water is cold but it is fine for splashing, a quick swim, or walking through while exploring for shells. Your kids will have a good time. There are also shops for browsing, some decent places to eat, and great local hiking.

The Pismo Beach sand dunes. You can ATV over miles of sand dunes. Might check websites, 8 and 5 might be a little young unless they ride with parents.

The sand dunes are south of the main beach area of Pismo. There is a beach area directly north of Pismo called Pirates Cove but I believe that is clothing optional and not recommended for children.

About 25 minutes north of Pismo Beach is a little town called Cayucos. The beach there is very flat. You can walk out a long, long ways before the water gets very deep. I always felt safer with my kids at that beach. Somebody told me that that type of place would have less chance of the sucker rogue waves that sometimes take people out to sea.

I see plenty of kids that age splashing in the Cayucos water without wetsuits. I also see plenty of kids that age splashing in wetsuits, which are available for rent at very reasonable prices.

obviously the water will still be cold as its 10 minutes away. It is out of the fog though and a nice small beach.
Just drive up from Pismo and take the Avila Beach exit.

The entire coast of California is going to have relatively cold ocean temperatures. We can definitely swim without wetsuits in Southern California by the end of the summer but it's still pretty chilly, especially when compared to the Atlantic or the Gulf.

With all of the fires and everything else going on, the last thing we need is warm ocean temperatures . . .

Shell Beach, Avila Beach, Sand Spit Beach, Morro Bay and Cayucos I would all rate higher than Pismo. Water is cold at all of them.

We live locally and would take our kids, at that age, to Cayucos pier for boogie boarding. Safe and fun but the water is still cold - kids didn't seem to notice it much but tended to look a little blue if they stayed in too long!

In addition to what other contributors have mentioned -
Avila Beach is a very family oriented place and, en route, the Avila Valley Barn has a farm animal petting zoo, tractor rides and such - popular with the kids.
Morro Bay is about 30 minutes N of Pismo and is a good place to rent kayaks/canoes and paddle around safely in the harbor - seals and sea otters galore (even had a lost whale last year) - or paddle over to the sand spit and explore.
I'm sure the family will enjoy the area whatever you choose.

They are all nice. Lots of good hiking around Spooners cove (Montana de Oro State Park) north of Avila south of Morro Bay.
Avila is nice because it's better protected from the wind. Everything north of Avila gets some pretty gusty winds, but maybe flying a kite is of interest.

I miss living in the area; its a special place.....

Shell Beach: we liked because it seemed almost private + its next to The Cliffs for happy hour and tacos
Avila: we liked because its beautiful, more sunny than Pismo and plenty of restaurants
Sandspit Beach: we liked because of it's rugged beauty and less crowded. No restaurants or shops are nearby - this is all wilderness.
Morro Bay: different feel and beauty
Cayucos: we did Cayucos when we wanted to do something different.

More like Rosarito! I don't think warm water exists in California beaches. ;-)

That is true. It's a small sandy beach and nice for kids.
Kites are a really fun thing for kids on the big expanse of Pismo Beach.

Another vote for Avila, especially since the beach itself has a really interesting history. One of my favorite spots on the central coast.
