Audi A4 -- Does Anyone Have an Opinion About It?

Post by hirlaw » Fri Aug 03, 2018 6:40 pm

I am looking at a 2018 Audi A4. I will probably go for the "Ultra", which has a less powerful engine, but is cheaper (seemed pretty quick to me!).

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with it -- good or bad.

Thanks!!

I bought one used and then kept it for 9 years. I had absolutely no issues with it and thoroughly enjoyed the car. I just replaced it and considered getting another. The only thing that held me back was wanting some variety.

I would recommend based on my experience. The car drove great. Some of the electronics were strange to me but functioned as designed.

I drive a 2015 S4 and love it. Very similar to the A4, but the S4 has significantly more power. The new A4/S4 incorporates Google Earth into the infotainment and is absolutely beautiful. Be prepared for higher maintenance costs than a non-luxury car, but most larger cities have good indy shops that work on VW and Audi vehicles.

Just realize that if anything does need repairing, once out of warranty, it will be colossally expensive.

I test drove a ton of certified preowned 2017 and 2018 A4s earlier this year. I live in Northern VA where apparently Audi’s North America HQ is so they have a ton of executive loaners that become certified preowned. I’d recommend calling all the local dealerships near you about their CPO inventory if you are open to it. Those things drive like a dream and have very nice fit and finish. Styling is timeless on the A4. The Premium Plus appeared worth it for the parking sensors, virtual cockpit, nicer wheels, etc. Many of my peers own them and admit the maintenance is a pain but they love the cars.

Long story short I came close to pulling the trigger on a lightly used 2018 A4 Premium Plus but in a Boglehead twist ended up buying a 2018 Accord Touring because it felt similar to the A4 but was substantially cheaper to own and maintain.

The current gen A4 is stellar. But I would get the torsen quattro one, not the ultra. The difference in mpg is minimal and the 'quattro' car is so much better to drive than the FWD ultra one. All A4s in MY18 have the same engine but different drive trains.

I live in a flat city with no snow. I just didn't think a quattro was really necessary -- and its more expensive.

Yep. Atleast drive both before deciding yourself.

Check into required maint costs to keep warranty good. I was turned off at how expensive service on vehicle would be.

I test-drove it while my Q3 was in for service (I wasn't really looking for a new car though). Rides and handles very well, outstanding fuel economy esp. in the Ultra version. Well-executed interior that is more modern than Mercedes C-Class and better-quality than the 3 Series. Very good reliability according to Consumer Reports. There are cars with more personality but on a rational level it's hard to do better than the A4.

I rented one for 4 days, 300 miles last year (Silvercar). Perhaps the sportiness of any car is wasted on me. I was not impressed. I prefer Lexus LS 460 (costlier, I think) and Toyota Avalon (cheaper, I think) to the Audi A4. I like quiet reliable cars.
It was not a bad car, but just not worth the premium to me.

Had a 3 year experience selling VW/Audi in my car sales history. They were the kind of car that if you went on vacation and took the other car, you would come home to a dead battery. Many service calls involving new batteries being dead after 5-7 days. Perhaps this "draw" on the battery has been dealt with, after all it has been a few years. Chip

Most important issue is how long you want to keep the car? If you're going to dump it in the time frame of 4 yr/50,000 Audi Warranty, then go for it without any hesitation. It's a fun car and if any issues come up it's the manufacturer's problem. If you plan on keeping it for 10 years/100,000 miles (i.e. off warranty) start looking for a german car specialist mechanic. If you haven't had a german car the cost of repairs in these cars is going to irk you.

It's a myth that you need to service cars at the dealers while under warranty. As long as you do the required maintenance and keep records the manufacturer must honor the warranty. This is federal law.

Neither of those cars are in the same class as the A4.

+1 for the comments denovo made and it is the same for any of the luxury car brands. I would add that if you own one of these cars long term (10= years) it is entirely possible to have more $ invested in repairs than the market value of the car. A good indy shop can be a lifesaver with these cars.

I thought this article comparing the A4 to an Accord as interesting:

https://www.motortrend.com/cars/audi/a4 ... on-review/

It seemed to conclude that the Accord was a better deal because the low end A4 stripped too much to get down the a reasonable price. The A4 will, of course, have a much higher status appeal.

Hi all: OP here.

I should have told y'all that I am unfortunately very aware of the high repair costs of a German auto. My wife drives a 2013 5 series and I am the proud owner of a 2007 BMW Z4 which I have owned for 10 years. I love it, but it needs a $4,500 repair, which is about one-half the value of the car, so its time to part ways. I know they are coming out with a new Z4 soon, but it will cost more than I want to spend. Maybe in a couple of years I will buy a used one.

I test drove an Accord (with the 2.0 engine), but found the seats to be very hard (not sure if that was my imagination). As to the A4 ultra, I liked it,and I am not sure I want to spend the $$ for the Quattro. I can get a new BMW 330i for about the same as the A4 Ultra (BMW is reducing prices to make room for the revamped 3 series coming out soon). I have read some online about "turbo lag" in the A4. Do you know anything about that?

Thanks again everyone!

Do you need/have to back to a 4 door car? I can think of many fun sports cars under 40k.

That lexus is almost 2x the price of the A4. It better be a better car:) The avalon is the same price (=- a couple thousand depending on what options you like). It is a much bigger car but doesn't drive as well.

Recent audi's have also been good quality wise. If you believe that or not is up to you. I have paid more for my honda than I did for my audi over the same period 8 year period. But that is a sample size of one:) If some of the luxury benefits (better seats, quiet interiors) matter to you enough to upgrade from a civc/accord, is up to you.

I don't need 4 doors. A Miata is an obvious choice, but it is too light (about 2,300 lbs) - I worry about safety.

I went from 20 years of Honda products to Audi in 2011 because of orthopedic injury. My body decided, and the brain understood that the body was possibly sacrificing reliability / repair expense.

Had an A3 TDI for 5 years. It had one recall that was taken care of, and then one .... repurchase event; no unexpected repairs otherwise, to 100,000 miles (and I never did have to do the brakes!). I loved the comfort; we also enjoyed the 500 mile range.

We got an A3 e-tron last summer (would have gotten the Accord hybrid, except for lack of a folding back seat). Knocking on wood, I am a huge fan. My commute is within the battery range, so most weeks I go without using gas AT ALL. And a 29" mountain bike still fits in the rear. It's not the zippiest, but I'm no longer a zippy driver.

The electric motor is a new product for Audi, but generally it seems that EVs have not hit big problems as manufacturers have each expanded to them, so I was willing to try it here. And the previous A3 had no problems. So I'm continuing to hold my breath, but thus far I haven't had the expected repair experience of German cars.

Save thousands and get a Mazda 3 Grand Touring. Favorably compared to Audi in terms of handling, etc but much less expensive and better reliability too.

We are on our second one, A4 quattro. My son bought our first one from us. I love it! Love the handling, look, everything.

I've owned three Audis (a 1981 4000, a 2004 A4 and presently a 2017 Q3) and a couple of VW Golfs (a sibling vehicle) through the years. Here are my thoughts:

1. The Audi brand has traditionally been among the first to implement new technologies. Some of them work fine, others are ditched within a couple of years due to being problematic. The generation of Audi A4 you are considering has few innovations, and that's a good thing.

2. Audis are not as difficult to repair as many would have you believe. It's largely a matter of procuring parts. Again, back to the innovations. If something that was a passing Audi tech fad goes bad, finding appropriate parts may be difficult. I, too, live in a warm, flat area of the country and have little use for quattro; my cars have all been front wheel drive. But most US Audis are quattro. Coming up with the FWD variation on a part may involve a special order, even by an Audi dealer, while the quattro version may be a frequent mover and kept in stock.

3. Audis are comfortable and responsive on the road, Both the driver and passenger seat are fully powered with all sorts of adjustments for those with tricky backs. There is absolutely nothing like those seats on any other brand.

4. Unlike Japanese brands, Audis are unforgiving of neglect in any form. For example, never allow the fuel to drain below 1/4 tank if at all possible. The fuel pump is suspended in the tank, and being immersed in gasoline is what keeps in lubricated and cool. Run your tank nearly dry too often and you will be stuck in a strange town waiting on a UPS overnight of a new fuel pump.

Am I glad I've been an Audi fan for almost 40 years? Yes. Does Audi have tough competition that it did not have in the 1980s? Absolutely. But as the old saw goes, happy wife, happy life. And my wife loves those seats.

I've driven a few Audis while on business in Germany. I thought they were all nice cars, quiet and comfortable, good performance.

I rented one through Silvercar and liked it.

I wasn't super happy with the FWD bias, but it was fine. Lot's of tech and buttons everywhere which somewhat take away from the driving experience.

Overall the car was softer than I'm used to (I drive BMW's.)

I would not buy one.

I drive an Audi A4 Avant (B8 chassis). It's a fun car but you have to stay on top of maintenance and repairs.

It's nice enough that people like it and have a favorable opinion of it when they get inside. It's common enough in Houston that it doesn't draw too much attention to itself, so it kind of flies under the radar for the most part.
